Bottom left side of the picture -- what kind of vise is this?

Subtitle of the image: April 11, 1942 A Chrysler automobile assembly plant in Detroit, reconfigured to produce tanks.

It looks like the plant is building one of these:lol:

Can anyone ID these markings on a TORCO vise ?

I started working on my TORCO vise and came across the following markings on the jaw :

Left side : 150-17-3
Right side: MF 56 (Manufactured 1956?)

Any help you gentlemen could give would be greatly appreciated...

ETA: Some more info on TORCO
Source: http://junkyardtools.com/tool_history/wilton

This tells me the MF 56 very well could be "Manufactured 1956" as there were made from 1949-1959.

I'm going to say a Charles Parker, about a 973 or 974, but no bigger.

I'm with Drive, for tanks, should have been a Reed 206, 4C, or a 208, but nothing smaller than a Rock 577.:headscrat

My vote is a Parker 974. The jaw shape, the embellishment at the front of the stationary jaw body, and the squared end of the lead screw point that way, imo. The wrench should be seen on side of the vise, but hard to because the picture is grainy, and it (vise wrench) may be positioned in line with the body.

Edit: Top,
My avatar is a 205.

Does yours have a pat. date of Nov. 22, 1910 on it like mine?

I hadn't intended to start a Parker collection, but....
How many of you have said that??
Anyway, I saw a picture here of a 63 1/2 and thought it was one of the most beautiful tools I'd ever seen. Had to have one. It was my first restoration. Then, one came up online so reasonably priced I couldn't pass it up. Then another. When I came across its smaller kissing cousin, the 83, it joined the family. Somehow a 94 came along, then a 93 1/2 showed up on eBay, and though I probably paid too much, the 83 was lonely, needed another big brother.
Here are the new guys. Now I have a question: Anyone know what color they were originally? The 93 1/2 has a fair amount of paint that looks original, and it's a very dark blue, Navy or thereabouts. The 83 is harder to tell. The silver is clearly not original, but there's not a lot of the darker stuff under it left. I think it really looks black. That would be depressing; I'd almost rather paint it the Rusto Regal Red that looks so handsome on the 63 1/2.

That vise should be mine! Nov 22 is my birthday. I still haven't found a nice one around me with that date on it. The search continues.

You don't want this one Veeps, The slide support is broke off. I found another one with a welded dyn. jaw but the owner wouldn't deal. They thought they had me over a barrel until I walked away

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal... Hollands, Erie PA??

Picked this up today. Didn't put a tape to the jaws, but they're over 4" and a worn brick squeezes in just before going off the screw. The pipe jaws have me thinking more about minimum than maximum.

Thanks mate, I even have the original box it came in. Picked it up cheap and saw its potential so I restored it to its original condition, but went with the metallic red just to annoy the purists :) Working on securing a 75 for the next project...

Brick should be about 7 1/2 " for a 4" jaw that sounds about right. If those pipe jaws get in your way you could always send them my way, mine is missing them . Nice find:thumbup:

Bio, you want full engagement of the slide in the body for max opening capacity or the vise can be more easily damaged. Always remember, the pressure points are under the jaw on the slide support, and the top back of the body on the slide opening.

Nice job. Do you have more pictures of them? Are those round anvil inserts on those 2 vises or are they just the way the anvils are shaped?

Its a removable insert, held in place by the square ended bolt.

Then there's a shape cast into on the bottom of the jaw that looks to me to be for holding hot bar in to bend it round a radius.
And the other side of that cast bit looks to be for bending flat bar round a radius as well.

Oldie: those are cool. as much as you are on Ebay i'm still wondering how you only have 2 vises. great control of the vice for vises and thanks for being our "OLD" guy on the thread even if you might not be the oldest.

cheers

Jake: as much as you help others maybe a local GJ guy can pick up the 5195 in person because other than a buggered up vise jaw screw it looks like it's in pretty decent shape.

That would be nice, but my wallet just can't swing it right now.
I'm sure something will come along eventually. Life is a marathon, not a sprint.

Thanks, this and the three threads rule should keep me out of trouble!

Wish I had room for the table it came off of. And innumerable other things, set the budget at 50 bucks, 50 pounds, 2 cubic feet.

Anyone toolish in LA that didn't pick estate sales in Monrovia this weekend, get there.

Here are a couple photos of the Reed No 32 I just finished restoring. This will be a nice addition to the shop.
