Is there a particular thread file or rethreading set I should get, or will any be as good as the next?

I do automotive work.

I'm sure there are others, but Lang, formerly know as Kastar is the OEM for every set I have seen. I have the SO branded set at work and just bought the Lang set which is identical from Fleet for $56 for home. The nice thing with paying the truck price is easy lifetime warranty. Rethread dies are easy to break if you try to hold them in a vise. Get the complete kit. You'll use the dies and taps way more then the files. I only use the files on large or odd stuff that the dies won't work on.

I have two Matco sets, one for work and one for home bought them when they were on sale about twenty years ago. Shortly after I bought the Matco ones I bought dad the Snap On version as it was the one on sale next. I actually liked the SO one a little better as it had a few more peices than the Matco.

302,

Like "Buckgnarly" suggested, the Craftsman 48 pc thread restorer set is high quality, very complete, and can be purchased for a relatively inexpensive price.

Here is a link to a YouTube video made by GJ member "woodstockva" on this Craftsman set: LINK.

These are used on male threads on bolts and studs. Say someone started to cross thread a nut on a oddball bolt that you cannot get and you need to reinstall it. You select the proper file based on thread pitch (For example ½-13 thread) which is the top file in the pic, the LH side of it, the face that is showing, marked 13. You simply file the threads to remove the burrs and clean up the threads so the nut will smoothly spin on. Each file has a total of 8 different thread pitches on it and some are metric, some fractional. Its really quite simple.

YOUTUBE video on using a thread file.

Slightly better video on doing this.

+1 on the Craftsman thread restorer complete set . . . great for the money.

As a kid, the poor man's approach my grandpa and dad used were various sizes of triangle files. You just file away the buggered up thread with the triangle file in the groove.

WTH in the 2nd video link? The guy says he finds 27 tpi on the leaf gage and then correlates that to "one oh," so it sounds like he's using a fractional thread pitch gage and metric thread file.

It may work, but not recommended folks. Get a metric thread pitch gage if checking metric threads. Available on Amazon when you order your thread file.

1.0 should be 25.4 tpi, so a 27 couldn't have fit perfectly if he was looking closely.

I believe Lang/A&E/Kastar also makes the Craftsman set. I bought it some years back and I want to say it was about $40 at that time?
