It's a block grinder and the 3/4 and 1 HP ones are pretty rare. It also appears to be in great shape... $100 is a good price.

It's a . . . 1 HP . . . monster power C-Man Block Grinder !!! ;)

Good luck with any negotiation but that's pretty rare grinder. Maybe the seller can "sweeten the pot" with another rare C-Man item . . . crowntop maybe ?? :D

I'm fine with the price honestly most of my basis for comparison is many threads here talking about the 1/3-1/2 ones at $40-50

I just wanted to make sure it was GJ approved before I go after it.

1 HP, great shape... needs a dusting, tool rests, spark arresters, safety shields, lamp, and quench trey... it's got it all. Go look up completed auctions on ebay...

I have one and hope to find another, it's a fine grinder. Mine runs best on 220, 221 whatever it takes. I bought mine new in 1988 from Sears for $100 because it had a cracked guard cover. I couldn't get it to run, so in addition to get it running the warranty took care of the cover.

LOL, they actually think that they could get $500 plus $70 shipping with no rests or eye shields. I'll take a baldor off craigslist k thx bai. :lol_hitti Plus they are too lazy to post pics of the light lol. "Current online pricing for a comparable USA brand such as Baldor are in the $1,000.00 range." I like blocks as much as the next guy but comparing them to baldors? Come on.

Here is some more information on block grinders for the op in case one is curious. I say it is a good find and should be a good deal. The model you found is one of the later models and has a Paramount/Allegretti & Co. motor. I would think that it would serve you well. Clean it up a bit and make sure it is fully functional but seems like a good deal to me.

That is NOT what people typically call a Craftsman Block Grinder. It has a plastic case. It may be a good grinder but I would not consider it a block grinder. It is one from when they quit making block grinder and wanted to keep the same look.

they're extremely rare to find around here, even the 3/4hp ones. @100, it's a fair CL asking price.

Exactly!! Look alike. I had a 1/3 hp of that type and is was ok for light duty use. Started using it more often and it took a dump. Tossed it to the side and put another one in its place, an earlier Cman plastic case "block" grinder and proceeded to break a foot off of it. Still works but I am going to put a real block grinder in its place or a Baldor. I am using it at home more and more as I am processing used tools at home now for the most part instead of at the shop.

The model from the op should still be a metal case similar to this one.

EDIT: Unless I am reading things wrong. The plastic cases were from later in the 80's I thought?

Thank you so much guys. It's a great one, took 5 mins to spin down.

While I was there I saw he had a 30 gal 6HP 150psi standing compressor. Bout the same size as the current 33 gal. So what do I need to look at on this compressor to see if it's any good? They said $200. Didn't seem to be interested in negotiating but you guys steered me right once. We didn't run the compressor because it was late and I wasn't going out to get more cash in a driving storm anyway.

Worth going back to look at it some more?

Congrats, post up some pics over in the block grinder thread in the vintage tool section! Glad you scored it instead of some lurker.

I personally would run from that air compressor. I have used oil less ones for years and HATE them. Wayyyyyy to loud. I sold mine off and bought a real one, 80 gal Champion. Not that you have to go that extreme, but find a regular compressor with oil and a belt and you'll be much happier. The only oilless compressor i'll ever own again is a little pancake compressor for nailing and spraying texture.

If it is oil-less, I would walk as well. Just not worth it, especially with belt-driven ones available at that price on CL.

could it be oil less at a claimed 6 HP? I didn't even think about that I assumed it was oiled but didn't look.

Just ask if it has a belt. If it does, you're good. If it doesn't its an oilless. They work fine if they have their own room. I kept mine in the garage and closed the door and worked outside. I could still hear it, but at least I couple talk to someone standing 2 feet away.

Not sure why you say that. My Bostitch compressor has no belt and it has a sump with oil in it. I believe there are many direct drive compressors that have oil in them.

I'll agree with the above.. That is NOT a plastic case.. A 1HP grinder is not all that common and is a very nice heavy duty grinder.. I'm a cheap skate--but if you need a grinder-that's still a damned good deal.

Thanks rocket. If I wind up going back to look at the compressor thats what I will check out.

What I was originally going to check was how long it takes to fill completely, condition of the water draining, and listen for hisses. I doubt they'd let me give it a bath and look for bubbles.

So I haven't got all the HF junk out of the way and got pics of it set up at home yet but I am working on that. I also have a 6" Delta I'm guessing 1/4 or 1/3 HP on that. I'll check again later on.

So I want to buy new stones and wire wheels for them. Also can you point me in the right direction for a a good dressing tool? I'm going to pull all the stones that are mounted and ring them but for now I'd still like suggestions on what's good in case I need to buy new.

Pretty much everything comes with coarse & med. Is there any value for homeowner use in getting a fine stone also? Between stones and wire wheels for general cleaning stuff up like rust, rough edges, sharpening, burrs, no fab work or anything.

So which grinder should get which wheels? Is a braided wheel going to be valuable to me?

Thanks guys.
