tuesday was finally somewhat dry. The grout lift guys showed up. Unfortunately they blew out another column 3/4 of the way up. This time since it was the last one they patched it and hand filled the rest of the way up. So I am now ready for the roof install. The roof guy shows up monday. Sounds like the weather system thats parked over Tampa will still be here until tuesday, but its hit or miss if we will get the big rain. Its not a cold rain so as long as theres no lightning I would say they can get the beams and purlins up at least. We will see.....

they got to the sheathing today, almost half of its in place but not screwed down. Hope we dont get too much wind tonight..... and yes, this section is insulated, I wish I had listened to all those that told me on the first section to insulate.

to all those considering a metal building or at least a metal roof, dont buy the insulation from the metal guys. I got this local for quite a bit cheaper than what the building guys charged. I got it from Bay Insulation, which has depots all over the country. I only know this now because the truck driver let 4 rolls fall of the truck and since I didnt notice when I signed for it I had to eat it. Lesson, take a picture of the truck and contents when it arrives, and go through the material list item by item. I couldnt because the guy delivering was blocking my road and it was raining so I did everything as fast as possible.

and a picture the machine they are using for moving and lifting in the grass, this thing is way cool.

wow, not screwed down? who is responsible IF the wind blows?

jim

I dont like the answer, so Im trying not to think about it..... They do this for a living, so I have just had to believe they know how many or few screws are needed for each step.

For those of us who don't live in areas where hurricanes or tornadoes are likely, Please take some pics of things that are required in your building to withstand 130MPH wind ! :scared:
...or floods or forest fires or earthquakes or sub-terranean termites or anything else. It freaks me out to see all these stick and pressboard-particleboard builds and shingled roofs.
That building will laugh at a category 5.

they had screws in the top and bottom of the sheets. Once they got all the sheets up they chalked lines and did them all at the same time lickety split. There were 4 bags of 750ct green screws so they were moving to get them all in today

not much going on, the roof install pretty much killed my budget as I did not initially plan to have someone else do it, but once I saw the height of the walls I decided installing it was not for me.

anyway, Platonic Solid linked me to the lighting layout software so Ive been playing with that. What a great guy! Its pretty powerful for a free offering and once you get through the initial learning curve its pretty slick. The site has some good instruction videos for the modeling and use, it goes a little fast but if you watch it, play with the software then watch it again you pick up a lot the 2nd time. So this is using up some of the impatience to get moved into the second phase. I am working to get a LED lighting layout Im comfortable with so when the funds are available I can get some lights. Mostly its to plan the circuits and outlet runs I need as electrical has to be the next thing I do after the doors. I need to make a master plan so I can rent a scissor lift and make the most of the week I have it, unless I can find one used at a give away price.......

got the jambs in for the 8x8 sectional high lift door, scheduled install is the 18th. Also hung the other man door. I got the handle and lock installed as well but no picture. Its a little bling, all the surplus guy had was a gold tone one, but the price was right and its commercial quality schlage.

well so much for the fancy LED light layout and new LED lights all round. I bowed to the pressure of the mighty dollar and had to buy used troffers. I got 40 2x4 4bulb t5 troffers with prismatic lenses for $250, including bulbs off craigs. there were 10 2x2 matching fixtures as well that were part of the deal, but I was so tired carrying out the 2x4's I just couldnt do it. They had the curved bulbs anyway so I figured they couldnt be converted to LED later... but the guy was on the second floor and I had to park 100 yards away, another 5 trips was just too much.

Great buy on the T5's. Your shop is much larger but for reference I just installed six, 6 bulb T5, fixtures in my 28x31 and am very pleased with the result. Originally thought I'd need some area lighting for shadows but don't think it will be needed. I walked in yesterday afternoon with sunglasses on and things were still nice and bright:) Keep up the good work!

thanx. What height did you mount yours? I was going to bring the LEDs down to 9ft to get enough light without stacking them, but theres a lot of cost associated with dropping the lights so far down. With these now Im thinking mounting them high with no diffusers and just add a couple more fixtures since they basically cost me $6.25 each

here's a quick layout using the Lithonia 2SP5 4 bulb troffer with acrylic cover at 14 feet high. values are at 30" table top height. I'm still looking to reduce the number of fixtures just for electricity. I plan to mostly work on a large table in the middle of the bays with machines along the walls. The machines will have there own task lighting to avoid shadows.

My fixtures are high bay with reflectors and about 11 ft high. I needed room for a jib crane.

here's a shot of my new door. Its a commercial sectional with a high track. I am really happy with it, it even has springs at the top for a soft stop which I haven't seen before. Also a shot of my craigslist troffers.

got my high work problem solved. I had never heard of an "order picker" but found these on a general search for lifts. these tend to be under valued. I got this one for $1100 because it has a bad cable and the batteries are weak. I'm going to just scab on a couple deep cells as I do not need the huge capacity of a warehouse lift. Ill rig a disconnect so I can charge the 2 cells on a car charger, at least thats the plan. I was going to get a scissor lift but for me this is a better fit use wise and cost wise. I can use it for high work and as a forklift with 2300lbs capacity. Im going to build a man cage to stand in similar to the top of a scissor lift. I will have pictures this weekend, this is from the craigs ad. I have it under a tarp on my trailer until I can figure out how to get it off the trailer this weekend.

bought this meter to give myself some perspective on the foot candle numbers. My office desk is 30fc and outside in the partially overcast mid day sun is around 1000fc, so the engineering toolbox chart is about right. conversion from lx to fc is approximately 10:1

spent a few dawn hours this morning getting the lift down off the trailer. It did a number on my poor little trailer, the middle board was taking all of the forklifts weight and snapped, which dropped the body down onto the other boards. The lift has little 1 inch wide steel out riggers that also dug in. I had to drag it off with my other forklift. I still have one of the pieces of plywood jammed under it, but at least its down off the trailer and in the building.

not much done today. I was working with my daughter on her first science project of the year, so great day in the shop. I also snapped a picture of the guard at the door. about 5 inches across...... its a Florida Huntsman spider, I generally dont bother big spiders. Its the little ones you have to watch out for.

my buddy loaned me his 24v dc charger. So i pulled the battery out of the lift using an engine hoist and a heavy roll around cart I had from my toolmaker days. No problem, it only weighs 1100lbs. so the issue the previous owner had was that it would not take, hold a charge. I knew this going in so I beat down the price some. I figure worst case Ill buy 3 golf cart batteries and scab them on top. When I got there to pick it up I was hopeful because I saw they had no battery station to remove and service the battery, so I know they weren't adding water. Sure enough, bone dry. I had to add a gallon and a half of distilled water. I also cleaned the built up crud shorting the battery to the steel case on both terminals. Next issue, the charger plug is different than the battery plug. So I cut a couple aluminum pieces and shimmed them in the charger plug, then clamped the aluminum on the battery side. I just will need to be careful not to touch both. Anyway, the battery is pulling 24 amps which is the max for the charger. I have ordered a desulficator to help break down the sulfate layer on the plates, but from the top the plates look really good. I also ordered a microprocessor controlled charger. Should get both next week. This charger will do for a while anyway. the battery has a 595AH capacity so at 24 amps its going to take a day to charge, Ill look at it tonight and see where it is

well my buddy's charger took a dump. I dont know why I always forget the old rule about never borrowing tools..... It lasted long enough to show the battery would take a charge, so I went ahead and ordered a new modern charger which I got from UPS today. as of a few hours ago it had charged to 50% which is already a success as I doubt I will ever use even a small portion of this battery's capacity. One of the guys at work is going to look at the defunct charger. Hopefully its just a blown cap or something. The darn thing is 20yrs old but Im obligated to return this one in working order or another one in as good condition. I looked online and used ones are running almost as much as the new modern charger I just bought, which is in the $350 range. ouch

anyone have a 24vdc 25amp charger they want to sell?

Impressive light diagnostics. I am also going through a light transformation. I have had 9 dual 8' T12's in my shop on three separate light switches and have had to change bulbs every other month. So I have slowly changed over three of them to six 4' led lights from Lowes. Two of the 4' are about 8000 lumens to one 8' dual bulb T12 at 3600 lumens. They are brighter and less wattage. So far brighter.
And for the 8 legged creatures. I feel they all need a boot.

was able to find a cage, turned out it was the one from craigs I showed earlier. It was too much when I saw it, but the guy was motivated to sell and we were able to reach a price we both could live with.
