I picked this up today. It is surprisingly quiet and smooth. Unfortunately the label is gone off the front as is the guard on the right and also the shields. How do I tell what size it is? Here are some pictures.

Most likely a 1/2hp with 7-inch wheels. Open up the bottom cover and see if it has a capacitor---if so, it's a commercial model.

In addition to the parts you noted you're also missing the spark arrestors & tool rests. I find they are often missing, so I fabricate my own.

Looks like my 1/2Hp commercial capacitor start. The one on the top right.

I just screwed a bulb into the light and it works perfectly. 1/2 HP is cool. How can you tell it is 1/2 HP?

The 1/2 HP commercials are that style with the 7" wheels, and those side guards. And the capacitors are in the commercial models.

So I went to pay the seller $25 and he said just give me $20.

So this is what I got.
Thor speedway 128 grinder. From the old ad, it looks like it's only missing the eye shields. Needs a new cord and cleanup on the switch plate.

And the craftsman bench grinder stand. Has 2 extra holes drilled in it but at least they are evenly drilled and clean. This stand is going in the e-tank tonight.

Saw this on CL and thought I would post the picture. It's a Belsaw "flat top", but the first label that I have seen that says "Allegretti & Co.".

Has anyone bolted a heavy steel plate under one of the craftsman stands to make them more stable and suitable for a vise or heavier tool?

1/3 hp block for $15 cracked eyegaurd 3 in cord and a funky extended guard. Plan to trear it down and repaint it. Is there a rebuild thread on this model?

Twertsy, A great cap-start at an unbelievable price.

BC, Welcome to the club and that is a really nice 1/2hp probably from the mid or late '70's. Have you checked the bottom cover plate for a date stamp?

Don't take the warnings lightly, it all starts with a 1/2 commercial (for me anyways), and they like to come home in pairs. Right now i'm out of balance as I have an odd number of grinders, so I fully expect another to show up pretty soon.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I sure do like it so far. This is my first bench grinder ever so I am a total novice.

I think the date stamp got worn off somehow. I was able to make out a '5' was all.

Here is the bottom plate. I took it off to check the other side of it but nothing was on the back side.

I recently inherited my Grandfathers tools and among other things got this Craftsman Block Grinder. It's stamped April 27 1965 on the bottom.

Gave it a quick cleaning and it runs great. It even still has the original Sears Grinding stones on it.

This is Grinder #3 I need a bigger shop :)

I cleaned up the original Craftsman crown top grinding stones. Then I noticed that someone had been using the sides of the stones as well, and there was embedded aluminum there too.

I bought new stones.

When the Norton general purpose stones came from Mills Fleet Farm, I mounted them up, switched on, and the grinder started jumping around. Crud. The old stones were so well-balanced that the grinder took 90 seconds to spin down.

So I bought some drill bushings from Grainger. I'm another $21 into a grinder than you east coast guys can buy for less than that. I'm annoyed at Norton for shipping stones with useless plastic bushings.

Hope someone on here bought this for only $100. Seller never responded to my email and had no phone listed. :( :( :(
