He's been an ebay member for 3 weeks. Going to cash in big, take the money and run. I'm sure HE is serious. I think its seriously funny.

Speaking of eBay, if you use it, DO NOT update the new app that just came out today. Read the reviews first, luckily I just downgraded it back to the previous version.

A 5197 is on my list...

But not that 5197...

I was going to tell him that it's missing it's "Swivelin' B@#tard" screw...

But since he already knows everything...

I didn't....

He knows everything about freight charges, too!!!

Needed a new drill press vise that holds round stock perpendicular or parallel to the vise table and decided on this really nice 3 way Grizzly (youtube reviews as "Groz" 3 way). Knew that it was delivered while I was away today. Came home to find it IN my garage next to this new to me Rock Island 192 4 incher.

Someone with my garage code loves me

I can never pass up a rock island. I have that same model, its been beat down pretty hard but nothing is broken on it. Morgans are everywhere out here, and Rock Island, IL is only a few hours away, its surprising I don't come across hardly any.

I still haven't figured out who delivered it to me. There is a yard sale sticker on it that says "30." Even if they paid that I'll call it a win!

Let us know how you like that grizzly, it looks like a pretty sweet tool that I could find a few uses for.

I don't blame the guy for trying to make a decent profit on that vise. My point is that when selling something online, learn to post clear pictures, especially on eBay. This one has pictures taken of pictures on a cell phone. The seller could easily have taken at least 1 decent picture of his restored vise. Stuff like that just drives me crazy. Maybe he doesn't know how to download pictures off his phone and he used a webcam to snap pictures of ones he took on his phone. I don't know but it drives me crazy.

Last weekend proved to be uncharacteristically productive.

At a Friday GS got the Craftsman 5196 - in the corner of a garage, in a pile of stuff, partially covered by a tarp. The garage is in a flood prone area, and the vise shows it. Check out the handle, it is pretty much gone, as is the badge. The jaws are still in good shape, but the main screw is frozen as is the swivel. Certainly a project and for a Jackson, who could pass it up? Based on a recent evilprey listing, I should get at least a couple of Benjamins for it as is. :willy_nil:

At an ES on Sat, got the post vise. 5.5 jaws, no marking I could find.

Finally the Reed 403 1/2 was a CL buy, for a Jackson and Lincoln (AKA Andy and Abe). The medallion is "Frick & Lindsay". The Frick & Lindsay Company was a distributor of oil well, mill and mine supplies around the turn of the previous century. Their building now houses the Andy Warhol museum. So this thing was at the Warhol before it was the Warhol. The swivel pin came out rather easily and the jaw swivels with just a bit of persuasion.

I am technically challenged sometimes. The one that gets me is the I Phone pictures that come out upsidedown even after you save them right side up ?
The little Versa Vise sticker balane was nice enough to share would not print for me. I asked my son to work on it and 10 minutes later stickers the right size.
It only took me about a week to figure out how to take and post pictures from this tablet I am using in the basement. :dunno:

I was hoping that one would show up on here, nice get. I got off a train in Harrisburg and saw it on CL already 5 hrs old. Figured it was too late but tried to get in contact with the seller anyway. I thought it was a Reed but the badge on the dynamic had me wondering. Very cool!

Searching but cant find a link to this shared sticker from Balane. I sure would be interested in a copy of that file. Can one of you guys help me out? I have a Versa with a bad badge.

CW: What size are the width of the jaws? I think 4 inch is Prentiss 19.5, 4.5 is Prentiss 20, and 5 inch is Prentiss 21. Other side of static might have # or on top like my Prentiss 22 does that is 165 pounds and 6 inches.

Well I finally met with the guy that has the big vise for sale. It was a bit of good news and bad news.

The bad news: Well, it isn't an 8" vise, it's a 7". And it weighs closer to 200 lbs than 300 lbs. It has a few issues, but nothing major. There is a hairline crack on the slide about 3" long on the top, tail end. Easily repairable. The swivel jaw hasn't moved since I've been born, and I'm 57 years old.

The good news: It a swivel base. He came WAY down on the price when I pointed out the crack. The best news is that I came home with it. It is in fact, unmarked, but it looks like a Reed to me. Overall it's in fairly decent shape, all things considered.

It's a smidge under 5" for the jaws. I can't see any markings on it but the paint is thick.
It'll no doubt reveal some markings when I stick it in the e-tank. Hopefully that will loosen up the swivel jaw pin as well.

Cheers for the info DIF:

CW: I'm not 100% on measurements and numbering so get me width for sure and ill check since I own all of them except the one Right just posted. Looks like a keeper even if cast lettering is rough.

Right: Pretty sure you now own a Prentiss #23 that is 7 inch jaws and 207 pounds. Too bad about the crack but it can be repaired.

Thanks for the quick ID Drives. After a little digging, that sure looks like it. I wonder how common it was for Prentiss to put them out there with no markings on them. Does the lack of a name help to somehow date this one?

Cwazy, here are the spec's on Prentiss swivel jaws that I have confirmed.

#19 -- 3.520 x 1-1/8
#19-1/2 -- 4-1/8 x 1-1/4
#20-- 4.550 x 1-3/16
#21-- 5-1/4 x 1-3/8
#22-- 6-1/16 x 1-11/16

Your vise does not match any of these Swivel Jaws. Did it shrink crossing the pond??? Curious to what you have.

Ritestuff,---Agree with Drive.---Believe it's a Prentiss #23 to.---Let us know if it's around 207 lbs..---I'll bet it is, minus the weight of the raised Prentiss logo.---Very tight tolerances between the swivel jaw and the Static body.---The swivel pull and the overhang in the front of the Dynamic are pretty good clues to Prentiss being the maker.---Very nice vise, should dress out nicely.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cwazy's vise looks like a stationary from the picture, but it's not that clear so it might be a swivel base.---The Prentiss vises numbering 18--19--19 1/2--20--21--22--23, were all swivel based.---So if it is a stationary then it will be some other number.---Of the which I have no idea.:dunno:

Cheers for all the specs :)

It's a stationary base swivel jaw.

Jaws are a 1/16th under 5"
When opened so the rear of the slide is level with the back of the static it is open 6 3/4"

Just to add it weighs 86lb and whilst the lettering on the vise is poor quality I'm beginning to wonder if the second word does say VISE, it looks to me like HOWE or something.

Only cost £20 so I'm happy whatever it turns out to be. I take it that it is fairly modern with that style of handle boss.

Was mentioned on here a while back, I think, that they do look like a Prentiss copy. The Heavy Chipping variants are rare. Still waiting on a 518 1/2 to appear this side of the pond. Record had three major distribution centres: Sheffield UK, Montreal CA and Johannesburg SA.

First thing I thought of was that someone had made a 5197 out of blue Playdoh and took a picture through a ViewMaster. :lol_hitti

Record made 506, 507, 508 1/2 cast iron heavy chipping vices and the 516, 517, 518 1/2 steel heavy chipping vices (and later a 518 that was much lighter).

Anyway they are proper rocking horse poo vices, hence you're quite excused for missing them. The 518 1/2 and 508 1/2 weighed in at 265lb
