I quit too  That is to say I quit buying things to clutter the shop. So today I came home with drawers and shelving. That's OK isn't it? Probably going back for more shelving tomorrow. To make room for more stuff. :willy_nil At least I sold some stuff this week. :lol_hitti

Listen folks...Problem or not, if there is a deal too good to pass up on and old tool or vise, it is coming home with me. I'll find something to use it for when I get it there.. :^)

Balane: amazing that you can shine up a vise like that so fast. you ought to post a before picture so the guys that don't know how good you are can really see. congrats and it should be a good seller.

Langss: here's a tip for you and the others that when you are buying a 100++ pound vise you can usually unscrew the dynamic jaw out all the way if the back of the slide isn't rusty. then you have two manageable pieces.

only think is that getting the screw back in the vise nut is not always easy with a 70 pound dynamic jaw in your hands trying to line up the screw. good thing you didn't let it go for $100 and just find a good solid bench to mount it on.

Fretters: did i mention I'm not buying any vises (vices) any more too? :lol_hitti
Thank You for the reply. The vise probably had not been used for a very long time, but it opened right up when I made the decision to take it. I didn't need the Vise, but I did know that it should not be going for $100....lol....My wife had no choice with much of the other stuff he had but to yard sale it. Thanks for your interest.

Blue, that is a Colton Pat. Vise.

George A. Colton patent holder, No. 320,224. Patented June 16, 1885. H&B, "Inmarks" and unmarked examples exist.

Nice find!

I just got a fully functioning Wilton 935 with swivel base at a garage sale for $20. That's a fairly good deal isn't it? It was made in Chicago and I believe the date is 5-50. In all seriousness, can anyone give me more information about it? A quick search didn't turn up much info. (I also got a Kennedy box full of tools and tooling for $30 but that's another story.)

You got a great deal for only $20.

Got this old fabricated steel vise (probably chinese).

And decided to shine it up a bit. New handle, copper jaws and a bit of paint.

Tim: personally i'd pass on the $80 vise and let a local guy buy it unless you need a road trip or have another reason to drive across the state(S).

Well, I will be driving out that way at the end of the month, so it is a possibility.

Do you have any idea what brand or size the vise is? The scallop behind the fixed jaw seems like it would be distinctive.

timdp,
I think that is a Parker vise. It is the earlier version that is missing the swivel plate and screw that would go through the bench to secure it. My vise is a model 8-W and has 4 1/2" jaws. The Trojan vise shows the mounting arrangement. The Trojan was a Parker made brand and I was happy to pick it up this week.
I am trying to be selective and cut back on buying (like other members) vises but it didn't work for me. I went to pick up one Wilton swivel jaw vise and came home with three others also.

You got a great deal for only $20.

rmalko2: Thanks, I'll post some pictures today.

BTW the same thing happened to me at another estate sale last Thursday. Even though I was the first one to the bench, the vise was gone. I'm swearing off estate sales. My sponsor thinks that is a positive step.

Have you done any work on that Erie you bought recently?

I went to a garage sale yesterday. There were no tools. I spoke to the seller. A faraway look came to his eyes. He said, “I have a vise. I’ll sell it for $20. These aren’t the ‘droids I was looking for.”

How about a picture of the date on the slide?

Timdp,---I agree with Get that it was made by Parker.

So you are looking at something like 120 miles one way for what looks like an unmarked Parker combination vise.---Are you getting the mounting hardware with it, (cause it looks like a through the bench swivel system), or does the stand come with it?

If your heading that way in a couple of weeks anyway, I'd defiantly check it out, but ask for the big hand tightening mounting bolt or the stand.---Get everything you can in the package or use the missing parts as a bargaining chip.---It is a combination after all.---I'm really partial to combinations.

I drove 140 miles round tip for a Rock Island swivel jaw recently and I had No other reason to go.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CRSINMICH,---It don't matter if you're doing the 9 step, the 12 step, or the Texas 2 step.---When you cross paths with that beautiful piece of iron that your not going to be able to live without,---Your off the wagon.:D

Well, like another person on this thread said, I'm not going out seeking the big scores, but if a deal falls in my lap, I'm not going to dump it on the floor when I stand up to leave. As an example relevant to this thread, if I came across a Wilton bullet at a good price, I'd go after it.

I went to a garage sale yesterday. There were no tools. I spoke to the seller. A faraway look came to his eyes. He said, “I have a vise. I’ll sell it for $20. These aren’t the ‘droids I was looking for.”

(By the way, YOU ****, CRSINMICH!!)

And, like others, I'm selling off some of the good deals I've previously brought home. In the last week, I've put $160 back in my wallet. In my mind, that makes it okay to spend $5.50 on a few adds.

All that said, it is hard to stop. In my case, I think it's more about the thrill of the good score than a hunter-gather instinct. YMMV.

Tim: I agree with the guys that the vise you posted has a bolt under it to mount usually to a bench. Not sure how its mounted on the stand so more pictures would help. It might be an old Parker or a few other companies made a similar vise and its early 1900's. I was thinking its maybe $100 in gas and a full day of driving so I wouldn't just for that vise. Of course for the right vise I've driven about that far and usually tried to find something else to buy to make the trip even better. I used to travel a lot for work and would pop in a video book in my DVD player to pass the time.

That does it!!! I'm back to practicing the Jedi mind trick. For every one of those that would turn up I could find a $20 bill.
Good score.

Thanks for the info and pics. Was wondering about the lack of holes in the base plate for mounting. If underside of the base has a threaded hole I suppose it would be possible to use a bolt with the correct thread and some big washers to mount the vise, even if the original parts are missing. Will certainly ask and keep this thread posted.

rmalkow2: 10 minutes after getting the Bullet, another guy had that same look in his eyes when he sold me a 7 drawer Kennedy box filled with tools for only $30. Give it a try and may the force be with you.

BlueBomber: I was hoping to get at least one "You ****!!" to validate my acquisition. Thanks!

va.grouseman: I'm starting to wonder if I might actually need a 12 step program. I've done the Green Apple Quick-Step a few times but I guess that doesn't really count.

bluebolt: I'll post a pic of the date as soon as I can get back to playing with my new toys.

BTW There's no need to stand on ceremony. You can just call me CRS.

The State of California owns that vise; Bodie is a state historical park.

Thanks for providing detailed info and the illustration. Very interesting piece!

I did find a patent citation dated Sep. 28, 1869, but there is no info on the details of the patent:
http://www.datamp.org/patents/search/xrefClass.php?class=269&subclass=272

OK, found the 1869 patent and it is for pipe jaws that fit over the regular jaws of a vise, not the swapable swivel jaws of the vise in question:
https://www.google.com/patents/US95258

Here is a cute combined anvil and vise:
https://www.google.com/patents/US19...ved=0CCwQ6AEwAmoVChMI4sfwgqjuxwIV0luICh3acgnE

Oh, but it is...

Well it gives me hope any way that an Parker 86 may still exist

I got the rust off, cleaned and greased this Fisher Norris vise. It got a bath in the E Tank and linseed oil. I found out the 3 locking wedges will only go back in from the inside while trying to keep 4 flat springs and the locking plate in place (PITA)
It looks like a Stephens vise with a swivel base on it. I have never seen a base locking pin that threads in, a big improvement over the cast in plunger type.
I didn't find any ads for it, only for the anvils and chain drive post vise. I think I might have a rare one

There is a Fisher-Norris fb page and a museum in NJ. The curator runs the FB page...he's a nice guy...

FYI. Love that vise.

I saw the vise on CL Norfolk VA and responed but never heard back. The guy posted in the vintage tool section on here looking for info ? I again expressed interest in the vise but never a word. A month had past and I got a response from him through CL. He had been in contact with the guy at the museum and he said that he wasn't aware that F-N ever made a vise like that. I was the first to respond of many so he gave me first chance.
I thought it was gone after a month but I guess you lucky once in a while :willy_nil

Get: Very cool vise indeed. Not sure how rare but I haven't seen one in person. I think I've seen a few others with that handle on this thread and maybe some of the other guys might know. Nice restore work as per your usual.

Joe: What's an fb page? Any link? I like those cool short swiveling stands under those old vise you mentioned you were going to buy. Did you buy them or if going today good luck?

Any hope for this Reed jaw?

Been reading and learning as much as I can on this thread. So I ended up with this Reed 105 since it is missing the insert on the dynamic jaw. What are my options? Use as is, scrap it, try repair of some sort, put brass jaw covers on it and pretend that was the way I wanted it?
