That is to say I quit buying things to clutter the shop. So today I came home with drawers and shelving. That's OK isn't it? Probably going back for more shelving tomorrow. To make room for more stuff.
At least I sold some stuff this week.
Thank You for the reply. The vise probably had not been used for a very long time, but it opened right up when I made the decision to take it. I didn't need the Vise, but I did know that it should not be going for $100....lol....My wife had no choice with much of the other stuff he had but to yard sale it. Thanks for your interest.Balane: amazing that you can shine up a vise like that so fast. you ought to post a before picture so the guys that don't know how good you are can really see. congrats and it should be a good seller.
Langss: here's a tip for you and the others that when you are buying a 100++ pound vise you can usually unscrew the dynamic jaw out all the way if the back of the slide isn't rusty. then you have two manageable pieces.
only think is that getting the screw back in the vise nut is not always easy with a 70 pound dynamic jaw in your hands trying to line up the screw. good thing you didn't let it go for $100 and just find a good solid bench to mount it on.

I have the identical vise. But mine is missing the clamp screw.
Actually it's not a drug, its a fallback to our hunter-gatherer racial past. The thrill of the hunt live on!![]()

I just got a fully functioning Wilton 935 with swivel base at a garage sale for $20. That's a fairly good deal isn't it? It was made in Chicago and I believe the date is 5-50. In all seriousness, can anyone give me more information about it? A quick search didn't turn up much info. (I also got a Kennedy box full of tools and tooling for $30 but that's another story.)
Got this old fabricated steel vise (probably chinese).
And decided to shine it up a bit. New handle, copper jaws and a bit of paint.

Tim: personally i'd pass on the $80 vise and let a local guy buy it unless you need a road trip or have another reason to drive across the state(S).
You got a great deal for only $20.
I went to a garage sale yesterday. There were no tools. I spoke to the seller. A faraway look came to his eyes. He said, “I have a vise. I’ll sell it for $20. These aren’t the ‘droids I was looking for.”

timdp,
I think that is a Parker vise. It is the earlier version that is missing the swivel plate and screw that would go through the bench to secure it. My vise is a model 8-W and has 4 1/2" jaws. The Trojan vise shows the mounting arrangement. The Trojan was a Parker made brand and I was happy to pick it up this week.
The State of California owns that vise; Bodie is a state historical park.
Thanks for providing detailed info and the illustration. Very interesting piece!
I did find a patent citation dated Sep. 28, 1869, but there is no info on the details of the patent:
http://www.datamp.org/patents/search/xrefClass.php?class=269&subclass=272
OK, found the 1869 patent and it is for pipe jaws that fit over the regular jaws of a vise, not the swapable swivel jaws of the vise in question:

Here is a cute combined anvil and vise:

Oh, but it is...
Are those the same ones you had a lead on a while back ? I thought I saw them on CL a week or two ago also .
Looks like the mother load![]()
I got the rust off, cleaned and greased this Fisher Norris vise. It got a bath in the E Tank and linseed oil. I found out the 3 locking wedges will only go back in from the inside while trying to keep 4 flat springs and the locking plate in place (PITA)
It looks like a Stephens vise with a swivel base on it. I have never seen a base locking pin that threads in, a big improvement over the cast in plunger type.
I didn't find any ads for it, only for the anvils and chain drive post vise. I think I might have a rare one![]()
