Im looking to insulate and existing pole barn and needs some advice/guidance on how to best to it. From all the reading I’ve been doing it seems that spray foam insulation would be the way to go but I’m still like some opinons on other options...and the best way to do spray foam
I live in central PA and barn is going to be my man cave. It will have a coal or wood stove for heat and I do a lot of home brewing so there is a chance of a bit of moisture build up in the air from the boil off.
Here’s the design options I’ve come up with (but I’m not sure if the design is sound). The walls are 2x6’s on 24”centers and the roof trusses are 2x4’s. Over the walls Ill be adding 3/8” plywood. And most likely be putting in a drop ceiling.
Foil and Fiberglass – Ive been reading up on putting radiant barriers/foil up to help with some of the summer heat but am unsure of the best way to install it. From what Ive been reading the best way would have been to have it installed right on the metal on the walls. (That’s not really an option right now and I would prefer not to remove the metal to do so).
So for the walls, do I put it in between the studs and then but the fiberglass batts on top of that? Do I need to put another barrier over the studs before I put the plywood on? Should it be the solid or perforated foil?
Or do I just put the fiberglass in between the studs and but the radiant barrier under the plywood? Should it be the solid or perforated foil?
For the roof I was planning on putting the foil on the underside of the upper part and then putting the fiberglass across the crossbeams. Does that sounds right?
Should I be using faced or unfaced fiberglass? Do I need to put another barrier on either side of the fiberglass?
Spray Foam - Spray in between the studs with of closed cell. Most of the posts of read seem to say 2” is the minimum for closed cell to work. Can I add some more open cell on top of it or even fiberglass batts?
If I add fiberglass do I need to do anything special?
Should I put some foil up and where should that go. DO I need any other barrier under the plywood wall covering?
The fiberglass was the option I was leaning to but am kind of unsure of using the radiant barrier/foil with it. Is there something else I can/should use on it? I was told moisture and condensation are issues with metal building and fiberglass can’t go against it without a barrier. I have to reprice out the the difference again between my fiberglass and spray insulation before I make up my mind(I may just end up with a hybrid system unless anyone points out a problem with it) I know I’m probably missing something important but thought this would be a good start….
