Im looking to insulate and existing pole barn and needs some advice/guidance on how to best to it. From all the reading I’ve been doing it seems that spray foam insulation would be the way to go but I’m still like some opinons on other options...and the best way to do spray foam

I live in central PA and barn is going to be my man cave. It will have a coal or wood stove for heat and I do a lot of home brewing so there is a chance of a bit of moisture build up in the air from the boil off.

Here’s the design options I’ve come up with (but I’m not sure if the design is sound). The walls are 2x6’s on 24”centers and the roof trusses are 2x4’s. Over the walls Ill be adding 3/8” plywood. And most likely be putting in a drop ceiling.

Foil and Fiberglass – Ive been reading up on putting radiant barriers/foil up to help with some of the summer heat but am unsure of the best way to install it. From what Ive been reading the best way would have been to have it installed right on the metal on the walls. (That’s not really an option right now and I would prefer not to remove the metal to do so).

So for the walls, do I put it in between the studs and then but the fiberglass batts on top of that? Do I need to put another barrier over the studs before I put the plywood on? Should it be the solid or perforated foil?

Or do I just put the fiberglass in between the studs and but the radiant barrier under the plywood? Should it be the solid or perforated foil?
For the roof I was planning on putting the foil on the underside of the upper part and then putting the fiberglass across the crossbeams. Does that sounds right?

Should I be using faced or unfaced fiberglass? Do I need to put another barrier on either side of the fiberglass?

Spray Foam - Spray in between the studs with of closed cell. Most of the posts of read seem to say 2” is the minimum for closed cell to work. Can I add some more open cell on top of it or even fiberglass batts?

If I add fiberglass do I need to do anything special?

Should I put some foil up and where should that go. DO I need any other barrier under the plywood wall covering?

The fiberglass was the option I was leaning to but am kind of unsure of using the radiant barrier/foil with it. Is there something else I can/should use on it? I was told moisture and condensation are issues with metal building and fiberglass can’t go against it without a barrier. I have to reprice out the the difference again between my fiberglass and spray insulation before I make up my mind(I may just end up with a hybrid system unless anyone points out a problem with it) I know I’m probably missing something important but thought this would be a good start….

So you have 2x6 studs BETWEEN the poles ? What are they attached to top and bottom ? Do you have a floor ? A picture would be very useful.

Spray foam is good, but very expensive if you do it it thick enough to really insulate well.

One option is a light spray foam (about 1") on the inside of the siding and along all the edges of the studs. This will act primarily as a vapor barrier so it is important that it seals all the cracks. Then you can install roll fiberglass insulation or "wet" spray on cellulose (fast and not too expensive).

Yes everything is already studded out with 2x6's and there is a concrete floor. I’m not sure if its insulated or not and the previous owner couldn’t tell me for sure.

I repriced spray insulation and it looks like its going to be a bit out of my price range this year. I’m back to researching a bit more about using fiberglass batts...

There is a bit of conflicting info on if i need something on the outside of the insulation against the metal. Some say to use the tyvek house wrap and others say they didn’t use anything. For the walls I was considering using some of the perforated reflective foil or tyvek >> unfaced batts >> 4 or 6mm Plastic >> Plywood.

Id assume that since the foil is perforated it would work somewhat like the house wrap....Is the foil worth the few extra bucks or do I just do with the house wrap or get rid of both all together?

Sounds like you've got nice pole barn to start with . . . and Welcome to GJ.

What is GOAL for insulating the building ?? MORE insulation is always better as it reduces need for heat. You only plan on inside insulation . . . . or you considering removing outer skin and adding layer of foamboard insulation on exterior along with housewrap?

You'll get best advice with lots of PICTURES as they tell a thousand words. ;)
Here's your first initiation in . . . . . . NeedPics !!

Thanks... The goal right now is just to be able to heat if for weekend use over the winter without to much trouble. I was really trying to avoid removing the outside metal but that may be an option for next year to add ontop of whatever I do. Ill work on getting pictures up. (I figured Id need them but havent been home to take them yet. Was just trying to get a jump on it...My BAD lol) I appreciate any advice I can get
