Subpanel main breaker position

The electrician wired my subpanel with the feeder and he put the 100 amp breaker at the top. The hot wires are in the way of the neutral bar, not too bad but enough to make wiring the neutrals difficult.

The feeder comes in from the bottom so.....can I shorten the wires and put the 100 amp breaker on the bottom slots or is that a no no and I should just deal with it?

You can place the main breaker at the bottom. What amp is the feeder breaker in the main panel and feeder wire size?

Not on that panel you cant.

100 amp breaker in main and 100 amp breaker in sub. 1/0 AL.

Yes breaker can be moved. Be sure to use the retention screw.

The cables need cable clamps where they enter the enclosure...

Not on that panel you cant.

Is that one of those panels that the buss bar is different next to the main so you can't put breakers there? If so I wouldn't move the main.

got it on the clamps and the set screw.

i will check the bus bars to make sure it will accept it.

If the bus is made only to have the main where it is then just remove the main while hooking up the neutrals. Also you can shorten the feeder an inch or so to tighten up the bend radius on the feeder a tad to get it off the neutral bar.

Look at the two screws holding the metal plate that holds the bus bar assembly and MB, see if you can take those two screws out and turn the whole inside assembly 180* and reinstall if you cant move only the MB.

Without a clamp on the SE cable? Call somebody else! NOW!!
Did he use oxide inhibiting compound on the aluminum wire?

I'll assume the romex on top without a clamp is just for temporary.

Just move the wires out a little and you have plenty of access

Yes the electrician said it needed a clamp. It was at the end of the day after we did the new wires from meter and changed out the panel.

I had run the 1/0 and put in sub.

When he saw he said it needed but what you can't see is that there is a 2x4 under the panel that the ser runs through. It 8s smaller than the hole in subpanel. He said not code but he wasn't worried about it because it does hold the wore firm and in the middle of the metal edges.

I was also going to clamp wire.

He did use antiox on all aluminum.

Virginia. Can do correctly. I waited like 4 months to get this hooked up and we started this past Saturday at 10 and finished at 10 something at night with nary a break.

This was the last location we worked.

OK. Now we understand.
It's not going to burn the place down or cause a person to be electrocuted tomorrow but you know it's not right and are going to make it proper.

That said. Looks fine as it's a basic install.

And like someone said above, see if the 2 screws holding the breaker buss interior into the box will allow it be be flipped. Since the breaker moves horizontal you can do that where I live.

EDIT- I know it's easy to say on a keyboard, but,,,,,,
It's usually always dollars and time saved to just do it right the first time.

I can't believe you waited 4 months for that! I hope you didn't pay professional electrician rates for something that looks like a guy off craigslist wired it.

1. No cable clamps.
2. Using an aluminum bussed panel=junk.
3. A 2x4 mounted tight to the bottom of the panel, how do you install the proper cable clamp now? Remove the 2x4? Does this electrician have any previous experience, at all?

I put sub panel in and then ran the ser and didn't think about clamp until after wire was in.

Asphalt guy not smart with electricity.

I don't like to redo but learned the not so hard way. I will fix.

The other issue with 2x4 on the bottom is u cant add branch circuit wiring into the bottom of the panel now or down the road.

Do it proper- remove the block and add the clamps...
