Hey guys, I was looking for way to increase my floor space in my one car garage and thought about getting rid of my tool boxes and organizing my tools on this type of pegboard http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-30wkb300gvb since I already have some and it's really good stuff. Do any of you guys have your tools up on pegboard only ? any opinions, ideas, good or bad would really be appreciated thanks.

I have a pegboard above my tool box. The pegboard is nice for frequently used tools (especially ones that tend to be used in small one-off circumstances), but it doesn't work well for a lot of tool types (i.e. sockets/ratchets, pry bars. etc.). I mostly hang things like an adjustable wrench, a few screwdrivers, a wood saw, a hammer, and scissors.

Yes, I do in a couple of spots that I thought were convenient at the time. I'm reevaluating my decisions as I clear out more clutter..LOL

I had pegboard above the bench when I ran the service department at a Yamaha dealership and I never really liked it. One of the issues was that the hooks were always falling out. That could be fixed in a variety of ways. The larger problems for me were that tools took up a ton of space that way and that the tool you needed was always behind whatever you were working on.

I have a 4x8 sheet of it mounted above my workbench. I have all of my saws, wood clamps, levels, bar clamps, etc. hanging on it. I did have most of my tools on it, but the hooks falling out issue and the visibility from the road motivated me to put the smaller stuff back in my toolbox, where it can be locked.

I had the room for it, and it keeps all of my long tools out of the way and (relatively) undamaged.

I use both a tool box and peg board. The tool box has some stuff, peg board(s) a lot of major tools. One 8 ft one for box/combo wrenches, one for specialty tools, another for misc tools, one for oddball stuff, etc. I have every available space in my shop covered in peg board!

Forgive the mess on the bench, its been hectic here at the shop getting tons of cars ready for events and lots of overtime with little time for clean up, but I think it works well....

(This is in addition to 2 full size tool boxes though)

I use both. The pegboard is best for screwdrivers and hammers down low, and levels, pipe clamps, yardsticks, plumbing auger, anything long up high.

I too prefer to keep portable power tools stored out of sight.

I'm with Nine on that! Same set up for me for the last 30 years (home shop)
Quarter inch pegboard with heavier hooks is vastly superior to the thinner stuff usually sold in the big box stores.

Yeah, I would not waste time or money on thinner pegboard or smaller hooks. I picked up some used 1/4" pegboard and "wallpapered" it with 1920's engineer book pages, then used 1/4" pegs used from ebay to hang my tools. This was just after I finished papering it, I have a few more common tools on it now.

I use pegboard because it is really cheap, doesn't take up floor space, and lets me see everything at once. I have one set of shelves for the large/bulky tools, ratchet set case, etc. but most of the smaller stuff goes on the pegboard. It also means I'm more likely to put the tools back where they belong instead of just tossing them in the drawer.

nine4gmc, that looks great! Good idea!

I agree. Great idea to paper over with engineering pages!
Another great source for hooks and fixtures is where I got a lot of mine... store closing going out of business. I gathered all I wanted, asked how much, they said one dollar.:rocker:

Wow, that stuff is expensive. I love pegboard and have lots of it, but wouldn't try to replace my toolbox with it.

I have some peg board on the wood shop side of the garage. It has those type of tools on it. This must have been an in progress type of picture because there is way more hanging on it now. The short section of the left is all levels, squares and straight edges. Other than this type of stuff, everything else pretty much resides in tool boxes.

I use it for parts, makes it way easier to find stuff.

This thread has got me thinking that in a small, one car garage a tool board would be a better option than a tool cart (in addition to my box).

Certainly Billy, foot space is a premium especially in smaller garages.

That looks nice. I have pegboard on 1 wall in my tool room for common tools, but i also use tip bins, 3 toolboxes, and about 16 ft of old wallmart shelving for tools. I keep my parts in another room.

As for a good place to find hooks go to a walmart auction. I bought a lot of shelving at one a people were giving hooks away to anyone that would take them, we ended up with a truck load of hooks.

I'm reconsidering my storage solutions now. What I'm finding in my new larger garage is that my large 72" x 30" tool box is useless. Too bib an heavy to roll around and with a larger garage I need to roll it to the point of work.

However I really don't need to roll everything around. Things like torque wrenches, power tools etc can stay on a shelf.

Peg board works for me for point of use tooling where you leave the tools you use at a station they are routinely used at. For example at my welding table I have all the wrenches I need to change bottles and gas lines on peg board. I don't have extra wrenches here just the ones required for the welder service.

The pictures shown are not populated yet as I just put it up. I have 3 different styles of pegboard.

Metal at the welding table from Diamondlife. I use this because its fire proof.

Cheep hardboard along my end wall because its cheep and there is allot of it. I use this to hold all on my grinder, polisher and machine tool attachments. I also find having safety goggles in sight of these machines is conducive to actually using them.

Over the work benches I have peg board but I expect its use to be limited. This area is covered with cheep hard board peg board.

I have a lubrication panel and a mop and broom panel made of a 4' x 2' PVC peg board. This stuff is expensive but the best stuff there is as far as I'm concerned. Easiest stuff to wipe down.

What I have just done is buy a tear down cart that I put the tools that I will need on and then just roll it to the job. I have a room just to the side of my lift that we call the tool room that houses most of my tools in a climate controlled area, and a cove next to the tool room for my larger equipment such as the lathe, drill press, sand blaster, press, grinders. I have tried to keep my equipment as close as possible to my work area.

I have a one car garage and keep most of my tools on a pegboard. Some small toolboxes on a shelf above it that I don't use much. Power tools and bigger things in the old dresser below it. It has been a lot easier for me than digging through toolboxes that had things blocking the drawers from opening. It might look like too much hanging on it but it makes sense to me, for now.

Thanks turfgnome! I had. 8' of gondolas at my old shop with parts and things on it but sold it to the neighbor when I moved to the new place.
Where do you find a Walmart auction, is that when one shuts down? We have them popping up everywhere around here but none closing. They're even putting Walmart grocery stores in every neighborhood between the 4-5 regular walmarts AND we have two SAMs club plus a costco all within 10 miles of one another.

I use some on one wall. It's kinda nice, and when I look at maybe moving things around for better use of space, a huge PITA. You pretty much lock that space in to that use when you hang tools on the wall.

I prefer my tools in tool boxes. I find pegboard too fiddly. I only use it to hang consumables and other things I don't use too frequently but need in plain sight so I remember I have them, odd things and big tools.

Having said that, I think in a small space that tools on a peg board might be useful and efficient.

I have a small garage and find pegboard very useful, that said I still have toolboxes and some shelves of tools in cases up above the pegboard.
Hoping to organize everything better soon, and then I'll post some actual pictures.

If you look at the attached layout the 11.2' wall has pegboard above the workbench, and then more in the front corner of the long wall, heres the only picture I have at the moment…

Which brings me to why I finally posted on here, after looking throughout loads of threads for inspiration, I finally find 3 things that are mainstays of my garage, a baby monitor, a beer (RonnieRingo), and a dartboard (NUTTSGT I thought I had read your entire awesome refurb thread but never spied that)

nine4gmc, Your wrench waterfall is so simple yet awesome! Have to steal that!

I'm planning to use both in my little 1-car. The pegboard will be for frequently used things that I just want to grab quickly like screwdrivers and hammers, and other things that may not fit well in a toolbox. Levels, rulers, squares, mitre gauge, saw blades, hand saws, rolls of tape, pliers, breaker bar, etc. I haven't decided about wrenches yet, since mine don't get a lot of use. I might start them in the box (likely a small 26" top chest) and see what happens. If I find I need that space for something else then they can go up on the wall. I'll also have a few magnetic tool strips up around the shop for quickly setting something aside but not immidiately losing it.

amngstfrndsdom, toddler for scale? lol. Really cute pic of the little guy in the shop.

If you look at a HF 26 in 16 drawer combo as a example vs pegboard in strictly a storage stand point a tool box allows tons of more tool storage than pegboard in a small foot print. Like others have said it good to use above a bench for common tools. In a small garage imo you need to go vertical on storage.

I tolerate pegboard. If I had a real garage worthy of doing I'd put some time into a combination of screws/nails and French cleat system.
I would not use them for auto tools. like those in their own drawers.

I use currently for wood shop tools. I made two 4x4 12 inch cabinets with 6 inch shelves. Made 2'x4' doors of 1x4 with peg board in the middle. thought was I'd have 6 inches on the inside for some things that I don't use much and more common ones on the outside. Works ok. had one break. that was a mess. if I spent some time organizing and such it would be much better. but I tend to put in a 8 inch item on the 6 inch shelf so I can't close the doors. the shelves.....esp the bottom ones.....are great for bin storage like hardware and such. also like the narrow shelves to store like items together like nailgun nails or sandpaper.

Thanks amngstfrndsdom, it's longer on the left(metric) side than the right(SAE), that's why there are rulers hanging on the right, both sides start in the middle.

I keep all my frequently used tools on pegboard. I have a separate one car attached to my two car that is my shop. I have a tool box and many cabinets to store the seldom used tools. I keep hooks in place with a little dab of hot glue if needed. Peels right off if I rearrange. Yes everything is in its place and tidy. Tools are used on a daily basis. I am a retired shop teacher and have no idea what it is like to do nothing everyday.

They have auctions when they move buildings or when the close one. Another option any other retail store that closes. I am living in an old hardware/lumber store that closed, when I bought the building it was full of boxes of pegboard hooks as well. I do not know if they did not sell at the auction or if they just left them after they bought the pegboard. We hauled a lot of them to scrap or I would ship you a few boxes of them.

I have all my common stuff on 1/4 pegboard. Screw drivers, open/box wrenches (by size), ratchets, and sockets. I find it a lot easier to cleanup and to stay organized. I grew up digging through Dad's toolbox looking for stuff, and I can say it is much, much easier to find when it is hanging right in front of you.

Pegboard tends to look "cluttered" but that is a matter of opinion and use.

I have some overflow/duplicate tools in the toolboxes and the less common used items.

I put peg board up over the bench to hang easy hanging stuff. It keeps big awkward stuff out of the tool box and heavily used stuff in easy reach. For me, it works good.

Thanks for the thought turfgnome, fortunately I have a file cabinet drawer full I got from eBay and yard sales etc so I have a few extras for when I put some behind the machines in the other half of my shop. I do appreciate the kindness though!

Do you have any pics/thread on your hardware store home? I like the thought of it, thinking back to my childhood going to the hardware store with pops and for myself as I grew older.
