Skunkape1: You did a really nice job on that Cman! It's a beaut. I hope you made a typo about Chrysler Green cuz I'm seeing light blue. My eyes have been going bad fast lately but I didn't think I was going color blind too. Maybe it's a photo/computer monitor effect. Anyway, good job.

xxaler: I thought that Sutton sounded familiar. I must have seen road signs for it on the way to Algonquin Provincial Park. Uh, any speckleds up your way? I do own two well used tying vises.

I'm a little color blind so some blues look green to me. So I can't help you. Lol

I finally finished restoring the Craftsman 5198 I got in July. Photos and info about the vise were posted in this thread back then as the vise was an Ebay listing and apparently the 5198 is a highly thought of piece of iron. The paint used is "Chrysler Green" engine enamel, a color which was used on some Mopar muscle cars in the late 60's. Although the vise wasn't cheap, I am very pleased with the vise and the outcome of the restoration.

Is that u Toby?

bagged et al: Blue-green color blindness is the most common type. In addition, it's far more prevalent in men. That's why the womens laugh when they see how we're dressed. How many times have you heard, "You're not going to wear that are you"? Well, it's one of the reasons they laugh.

Special note for furriners: "the womens" is dialect not bad grammar. I don't put bad grammar in my posts on purpose. It's there but it's not on purpose.

Your color blind fact is correct. I always call things green and my wife says, "that's blue!" Then I go ahead and try to argue that it's aqua or blue/green.

At the end of the day, if you like the color of the vise you painted, it doesn't really matter what color it is.

I decided to go with krylon satin jade on my Wilton. I had to repair out washing machine so I didn't have time to finish this one. Still need to clean up he paint lines and sides of the jaw towers. I think I'm going to paint the letters black.

I guess I should have made it more clear that I liked the color on his Cman.
I agree with you and Billy S. "That which we call Chrysler Green, by any other name, would still look blue". BTW your Wilton is green, right?

SA: your Craftsman 5198 looks great. nice find and very nice restoration. it looks blue to me too.

JZ: Fretters is correct saying the slot in the nuts on the 519x vises is for adjusting and just another reason why they are a great vise.

Bagged: that Parker is a showpiece. nice work

Yes it's green. Although my son who isn't color blind told me it's a little bluish green. :dunno:

I picked up this Rock Island 591 on Saturday for $35. Barely used!

In addition to the Rock Island pictured, I dug out these two vises I bought last spring - before I found GJ. Quickcet 3" "Grand E-vise" and a "Speedmaster" hobby vise. I cleaned up and painted the Quickcet the day I purchased it. Paid $5 for the pair.

I'm a one day old member. Glad I joined. I'll take more photos of my vises but here are some already on my camera. The black one is my newest find a 7" Athol halloween special. Then a trailer load of a few going to the tractor show in Portland Indiana. The big Athol was locked up when I got it. Now moving freely after much work.

Lineshaft: again welcome to the group and since you mentioned you almost have 100 vises please post up more pictures as you have time. it also looks like you like presses.

Riley: how is the journey down the rabbit hole? at the prices you are buying the vises you are finding you won't have any issues selling one to buy two if you get hungry for a few more.

cheers

Here's a picture of the paint I used on the 5198. I wanted a color which at least hinted at the original but had more pop. The paint color is most accurately described as turquoise in my opinion. It does look more blue than green to me as well.
Oldldh: Really the only cost was the vise plus shipping. Throw in a can of paint and maybe some sanding/wire wheeling supplies and total cost was around $520.00. That's certainly a lot of money but I think of how much you and I can spend on made in USA truck tools. When you buy a classic vise you're usually getting USA made plus the quality and style of 50+ years old tools.

lineshaft: Welcome! I'm looking forward to more photos of your vises. I like your Halloween theme. Here's one I put together after I got the idea for vise centerpieces from a post that another member made. (It's just a joke. My wife wouldn't let me put that in the center of our table. She did say that if it had been a Palmgren it could stay.)

Welcome to the group from me too.
That is certainly a fine collection there.
I am currently working on a seized 4 inch Wilton bullet from the Chicago era. I'd love to learn about what you did to unstick the one YOU fixed. The design of the bullet with the fully enclosed slide is making my life quite difficult!
My story on the progress so far is detailed over on the vise repair 101 thread.

Welcome, and you're in good company with fellow collectors. :D

Update on the Morgan 135: To get it fully restored I'm looking at over $200 in parts, not including shipping. A brand new Morgan-Milwaukee 135 is $300, so not worth the investment. I'll try to get it as tight as I can with the existing components. :(

Did someone say Henry vises.......here's mine reporting for duty!!!

Thanks for the pictures, flavc3. It looks no nonsense but with a bit of flair. After the earlier discussion of blue or green or blue-green it's good to see a definitely green vise although an unusual shade of green. I like it. What is it called? I also like the idea of painting the spindle hub but not the bar. I might have to try that. Can we assume that you did the resto on that Henry?

Yeah I really like the patina look.....again shows the "life of the vise"...not really a fan of the shiny "look". The color is Krylon Satin Italian Olive....real nice color. Thanks again its an awesome vise....very stout!

flav3 and Fretters: That's a curious coincidence. I have a background in history and, to a lesser extent, archeology. Just yesterday, as I was working on one of my vises, I thought I should leave it alone as much as possible to preserve the history and stories of the tool. Archeologists often rebury their finds for much the same reason.

Welcome JW: Emmert Tiger is a new one on me too. I have an Emmert but it's not anything like the Tiger. What area are you from and more importantly what vise/vises do you own and do you have pictures?

EDIT: Here's a link to a previous thread about Emmert Tigers

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=297660

I'm a vise rookie but looking to get my feet wet. Going to look at this Emmert thursday. Only visors I have at present are China made but actually take a decent beating. I'm from south central PA.

Oh ****! Quick, go look back at all of the warnings we have given to newbies, Riley in particular. It's a sickness, a disease! Run away fast while there's still time!!! Okay, having said that, I think you should go after that Tiger, but don't blame me. I warned you.

Fretters: I think the baby bullet build is the same one that has been posted. I'd love to watch, but I'm having connectivity problems. The video will only run for 3-5 seconds then it freezes for 6-8 seconds. For some reason I'm overrunning the buffer. Whatever the reason it's unwatchable.

Thrumcap: All this talk about Emmert Tigers has me wondering something. I noticed that the spindle nut for an Emmert pattern maker's vise looks identical to the one on the Emmert machinist's vise I'm restoring. I've run into a problem which involves the nut so it's possible that I may need a replacement. If the nut on Tigers are the same as on the other two types then I'll have more possible replacement sources. From the pictures you posted it looks like the Tiger nut (no off color jokes please) is probably similar to the usual bench vise nut and not the other two Emmerts. Those nuts are circular with a threaded portion in the middle. Am I correct that the Tiger has the more common nut?
