I took a load of metal to the scrap yard and ended up buying a 2" and 2-1/2" Proto Professional Combination wrenches and an old red top chest for 4 cents a pound. That was around 28 bucks. I gotta stop there more often!

+1 I picked up an old Williams 1-1/2 combo wrench about 6 months ago for $3. There are some treasures hidden away at scrap yards.

I think I've got something before at a pick and pull once, can't remember what it was and it was nothing to write home about. I did find a home made club in a Wagoneer I was getting parts from. Looked like someone widdled it out of a log. I almost bought it.
I've seen toolboxes at scrapyards too and some random hand tools. Everytime I've bothered to look it's been cheap stuff. They do keep on the wall a bunch of cool stuff people have sold there. It's amazing what people junk.

I believe he got them at the place you sell your scrap metal (scrap yard) by the pound, not a pick a part. I found out about this maybe 5 years ago, lots of good stuff there. I figured I was the last to know.

Yep, you ****......back in the 90's I managed a auto salvage yard in central Florida, the owner also had 3 metal scrap yards, it was unbelievable what people scraped. My yard foreman was in his early 60's and had grown up in the salvage business, he collected tools he found in cars or went over the scales his entire life. His garage was packed floor to ceiling with bins loaded with tools, his plan was to sell them at flea markets when he retired. No pictures because it was so long ago but I either found in cars (which were free ) or bought over the scales such things as, a full set of Ridgid pipe wrenches from 4" to 36" , many impact guns ( scraped as dirty aluminum ) a lathe, vices, hydraulic press, more hand tools than i can begin to count or remember .....the yard was next to a giant retirement community and we'd get calls all the time usually from widows asking if we bought metal , their husband died and the garage was full of metal tools would we be interested. If you can cultivate a relationship with the local scrap yard and offer to pay
more than the mills are paying and maybe a pizza or such for the yard guys you'll be surprised what what goes through those gates

Good stuff gets scrapped constantly. Many large retail chains have policies that leftover goods go to the scrapyard. Home Depot probably scraps enough pallet racking each year to outfit 5 new stores.

All the scrap yards around here pull the good stuff aside for resale. Good place to look for vintage large vise.
