Rene: First off i want to congratulate you on the work you've done so far. i do have a few questions though.

why did you dig out all the dirt? was it too soft to drive your cars and rigs on so you put in a better material for the driveway?

since your garage is connected to your house i'm a little concerned that you don't have a good firewall or do you? it might be a good thing to put a cement or brick wall up there and maybe a steel or another cement beam at the roof line for safety. with the torpedo heaters and all the car stuff you want and like to do i hope you don't have a fire, but just wanted to throw that out.

i thought the cement beam you made was an awesome idea and money saver. the brick guys and you are doing amazing work too.

cheers

PS BTW with all that heavy lifting you might want to get an inversion table and hang 5 minutes daily. i did 8 years ago and haven't been to a chiropractor or doctor since and i lift and move around a lot of heavy stuff for an old guy.

Hey René,

great progress!
Are you satisfied with the Metabo Chopsaw?

Jan

I havent tried it yet :)

But I have a friend that have the same model, and he thinks its awesome...
At the first I wanted a coldsaw like this one :
BS-712R-blaa.jpg

But I think it take to much space. And it will not be that often that I use it.
The chopsaw fits in everywhere.

Thanks a lot :)
First I wanna say to you, that I just have written about 25minuts of explains. But my computer crashed. So it was all gone.

Now I try again, maybe not that detailed. :)

The reason why, I dig all the dirt out, is because of the soil is full of clay.
So in the winter, it all get very muddy.
This winter I got stock with my car twice. And our dog was always dirty. And that is not a good combination with we got a light colour on our floors.

The local contractor told me to dig away 80cm of soil. Then apply 40cm of sand, and 20cm of gravel. Also make a drain for the surface water.
At last we put on 2-3 cm of what kind of stones/gravel we want.

The danish weather is so bad at the moment, so I can't dig with the tractor.
The contractor cannot dig aswell, because he will ruin the underground he says :)
So I pay for, that the Danish summer will get better :)
The forecast says it will rain for the next 3 weeks.

About the fire protection.

Between the garage and the house, there is 2 layers of bricks. Between these there is 20cm of insulation. (Rockwool) Any of these cannot burn.

By danish law, I have to put an firealarm, or smoke detector for every 10meters in the household on every floor. That means that I have 12 firealarms in my house.
I also planned to put in 2 the garage. (Firealarms that detect high tempture because of welding)
All these detectors will get connected together with my security alarm system, and if there will be an alarm, I will get an SMS and the sirene will sound.

The alarm system is not quite done yet :)

For those of you, that are interrested in the electrical installation.

This is for the first floor.

This is the main breaker panel

Todays work in the garage:

See you all guys.

Most residential buildings in Europe are made out of cement block. If you look at some of the other pictures you will see it is solid block, not hollow like we use in the US.

Only barns and shed have structural wood walls and that is less common now a days because wood is expensive in most of Europe.

The "brick lintels" over the windows were all defect, so these got removed, and new one got installed.

In the US we would not call that area over the windows a "brick lintel". Just "face" brick.

A lintel is a structural element designed to carry the load of the building above a door or a window. You made a good one with rebar in it !

Just "terminology". I think we all could see what your were doing !

Rene - Is 100mm of rockwool insulation common between the block and the brick on most Danish residential buildings ?

Rockwool is not used much in the US because we have less expense types of insulation. It is good, just more expensive.

Rene: i thought you might have something like a swamp out in front of your garage for you to take out that much dirt, but i didn't see it anywhere in your thread. sorry to hear about your computer if you had a nice explanation written and if there was more and you want to write it later do so when you have time or I (we) get the reasoning.

good to hear your walls are double thick brick and cement. I've heard of just a rag full of wood stain sitting on some dry wood can cause a fire so it happens and just wanted to make sure you'd thought of it. very nice.

i have to ask because the electrical system doesn't look like ours in the US so is that for 110 and 220 power or do you have a 3 phase and 440 power?

your old shop is looking amazing and i hope you like your new job.

cheers

Due to Danish regulations we have to put 350-400mm of insulation in the walls, roof, and floor.

In my garage there is only 100mm becsuse it is from the 70'ies

Hi again all...

Sorry for the late update :)

I got a new job, where I travel a lot. So when Im finally home, my family takes most of the time :) And during my home period I had some projects on the main house. These tasks are more important than making garage :) (My girlfriends/bookmaker/boss opinion)

The last 3 days I had some spare time for fixing garage. I started on the ceiling project. As mentioned before, I wanna finish the roof with 150mm insulation and troldtekt ceiling. At the moment no insulation is to be found on the roof. And for better climate inside during the winter, I hope to be finished before that :)
During the danish winter, I hope to get some more spare time from work. At the moment I work 21 days out, 10 days home.

Supplies

Because I wanted the garage door as high as possible, there is no space for insulation over the troldtekt ceiling plates. There might be space fore 40mm insulation, but then there is no ventilation between the concrete and insulation.
That ****.

During this by my self is really difficult. But I managed to get it done. The downside is today my back hurts :)

My new workbench under construction.

The vapour barrier was a pain in the *** to fit by my self. But what the hell, its intact.

Poor Nissan

See you next time.

Tomorrow I leave for Norway for two weeks. And after that United Kingdom for 10 days.

Looks great with the framework for the insulation and the new workbench, it's going to be a super cool garage.

Hi all...
Long time since last update. I have been two weeks in Norway, and two weeks in Scotland for work.

Now Im back again, and hopefully I will finish the ceiling in the garage, the electrical and maybe a bit of organising :) My misses will love that!

The ceiling is called Troldtekt.
I got a very good offer, because it was 2. sorting. But some of them is in very bad shape. But again, its a garage. It will get dusty in no time :)

Hi again.

Now I have been home for 6 days. And I have to travel at work again :)

A few updates made in my home period.

Some more ceiling mounted, and some light installed.
The car park garage got new roof. It was highly necessary. :)

The new roofing was steel plates at 3,7x1,1 meters. Very easy to install... Time spend on this project was about 2 days for 2 men.
The biggest issue was that the garage was not alligned. So it was very off. New batterns??? needed to be installed aswell...

Here is some pictures.

The only ceiling left is the section in front of the garage door.

Night picture with ceiling light :)

Next day we started on the garagebuilding. I though it would be best to rescue my Nissan before we started this project :)

Very easy install.. Even I could do it :)

50% done

Next day

I dont have any pictures of the finish job. But it looks good :)

Next time I will get home I will look at insulation of the ceiling in the workshop.
I have a friend who have a papirwool mashine, and I will apply 100-200mm insulation. (4-8inches)

At the moment im looking at a heat source. It might end up with a pellet oven.

You have a really nice place and it is going to look great when you are done. For a guy that has to travel a lot because of your job, you get more done while you are home then I could even think about.

Nice workshop.

I have seen some of the windmills they make in Esbjerg, and they are gigantic :) Also been offshore flying helicopter from Esbjerg, and then we flew over some pretty big windmill parks. I think they are very interesting technology :)

Drivesitfar:

Diggin out all the mud helped yes. No problem with mud more.

It took quite some time, and we havent got the rest of the bill yet :)
I will see if I can find a picture when it was worst :)

Vegar:
Windturbines today are very big yes.
Im at the moment in Scotland, at a site with 2.3MW Siemens Turbines.

Maybe I will go to Texas when I go home again, this might be the last project for the year, then I will get some months off :)
Plente of time to get the garage done :)

Matias and Jafrosphcity:
I did go from 300squaremeter to 120m2. So Im in a big need of more space. But my girlfriend says that an extension will not be scheduled before I give her a Baby.

Rene: great pics. i can't even tell you how jealous i'm feeling watching your new front granite or stone steps and walkway being put down. i hope it stays level for years to come.

keep up the great work and don't hesitate to post more pictures. Also just ask questions if you have any because even though a lot of us are halfway across the world we'd be happy to help you if we can.

cheers

PS get in plenty of practice before you have that first baby because speaking as a father of five the practicing gets harder to find time for after the little ones show up. ;)

Questions will come...

But now i have been following a lot of builds after all... And there is a lot of things that we do different from the US to Europe.

Like wiring and installations of electricity.

Heating is more or less the same.

I have just promised her to get two or tree children before she gets too old :)
She and I are both 26.

I dont got any more pictures on my work computer. I will post that when I get home again.
Hopefully within a week or two :)

I think this is a great build. Maybe I missed it, but is it insulated behind the troldtekt ceiling tiles?

Also did you put any sort of membrane underneath the tiles on the garage?

Rene: post pictures of your home, garage and any scenery pics you want to because some of us would love to take a vacation in your part of the world some day.

also did i forget to mention tool and toys funds get harder to find when supporting little ones so get stocked up. again practice without REALLY trying is fun too. good luck with that
