Danish 120m2 garage build(Image heavy)

Hi all..

Im René from Denmark.
26 years old, educated as a auto-mechanic, and Marine and Technical Engineer.
Interrests: Cars and HARD WORK :willy_nil

About 8 month ago, (Summer 2014) i bought my dream house with a empty garage.
The garage is 17meters long, and 7meters wide.

My plan with the garage is to use it as my private autogarage, tuning and restoreing old classics :)

The garage was build in 1970, and has been used as a storage for a former company.
The shape of the building is okay, but windows, roof and the garagedoor has to go.

The equipment that im going to install:

1x 2-post autolift; Launch lift from china (brand new)
1x 2-post autolift; Stenhoej lift from Denmark (1970, getting resprayed in red)
1x floor drilling machine
1x workbench
1x 20bar floor press
1x 7,5hp Stenhoej air compressor 500L
1x 2-wheel dyne (maybe Bosch)
welder, grinder and much more.

Enough talking. Pictures.

Here is a picture from the first day I saw the property,(before I bought it)

Next a picture from the inside, this is also before I bought it.

At the moment, I work for Siemens Wind Power in Denmark, and my job consists of quality assurance on coatings. Therefore I had the chance to get some cheap, but good epoxy paint for the floor.

Project no. 1:paint the floor.

So I started to clear the floor, and prepare it for cleaning.
For cleaning I used Maxi 3 industrial detergent and a 7,5hp pressure washer for removing grease and oil.
After drying in 2 weeks, I applied 2 layers of epoxy coating, and finished it of with a coating of a hempen 2-component polyurethane. The finish was a nice matt Ral 7035 flooring :)

Here you got the pictures.

There was some cracks in the concrete, 2-component contrete filler applied.

All the stuff was moved to the other side to clear the floor :)

After pressure washing the floor, the heat gun helped to dry the floor.

This is the end of the first update.

The next update will come in a month.
Hopefully with installing new windows, auto-lifts, garage tools and some cars.

This summer, I hope that there will be time to isolate the building.
150mm in walls (250mm in total) and 200mm in roof.
Then the climate inside will be much better during the winter.

If you have any good ideas, and/or need some more info, pictures. Then fell free to ask.

First of all. Thanks for the attention for my project.

Danish-Welder: Well, the challenge now is how to organize the workshop.

My last garage had a size of 300m2, and there I only had to fit in 1x 2-post lift.

This garage is much smaller, and the problem is, that its only 7meters deep.
The other problem is, that my girlfriend don't wanna 2x garageports for entrance. That gives a challenge in organizing again :) ( One for each lift)

This morning I have made some drawing in Sketchup, (First time user) for see how it could be organized.

If any of you, have any ideas, feel free to post, or maybe make some drawings yourself :)

Now I have taken some new pictures.

Some of them are old, but it shows the progress anyway.

At the moment I'm very busy. My parents farm are under sale, and that means a lot of work as cleaning, and moving stuff :) In other words, the progress the next few months will be slowly.

At my old garage I had a ton of bolts, nuts and equipment. And as you can se on the pictures below, its all stored in pellets.
At the moment I don't have the time to organize all of this on the storage shelves. So it looks VERY messy :) I even don't know where the finish position will be for the shelves.

First I found some pictures of the cars I have in Stock at the moment.

This is my Nissan 200x, (240x in USA)
Ca18det engine. Hopefully 500bhp this summer.
Bought in germany 7 years ago. A rusty *************!

A MG B from 1970. Imported from California.
This one my father and I build for 3-6 years ago.
It took 3 years to build, because my father was a farmer in Denmark=Very Busy.

Here is a picture of my Launch china lift.

All these pellets have to be stored on my new storage shelves.

It looks messy right?

Last picture. A overview.
DSC_0167_zpsoytgoix9.jpg

That was all for this time folks.
Next update will contain assembly of my Stenhoej 2-post lift.
I just got a call, the the lift have been blasted with grit, and now metalizated. Next progress will be epoxy painting and to finish it off with a polyurethane in Red.

Nice cars!
Your garage will come out very good as soon you get things sorted :)
Regarding to the lifts, have you bought both already or just the one..?
Because maybe a scissor lift would be an idea.. Then mount it in the floor, then you will have free parking space, an adjustable table, and a lift when you need it :)
I would place it to the right side then :)
I only got 75 m2, so i have limited space aswell hehe..
Where are you located in Denmark..? :)

Nice property! Makes me rethink my plans about moving within The Netherlands, everything is to small and to expensive overhere.

Are you going to put in a small loft to create more floorspace?

Danish-Welder.
Near Herning in Vestjylland.

The Stenhoej lift I bought 6 years ago. I have used it for restoring cars, repairing and corrosion protection the underbody with oil. And the last part tells, that the lift was very dirty :) Furthermore, the lift had several damages when I bought it, and because it was placed in a garage without heat, there was some surface rust. Then I decided to give it a metallisation and epoxy coat.

In December the Launch lift was on sale in dvsalg.dk, and at that moment I wanted a second lift, because I want a lift for repairing cars (on and off several time to time) and a lift for restoration cars (Maybe occupied for a year at the time)

You mention a scissor lift. And I have given it a thought, but as a mechanic, the only lift we never used, was the scissorlift from ravagoile, mainly because of it was too wonky.
Your right that it would be handy because of it is flat.
And last. Its is expensive :)

Dirk Thelen.
Well, its a good idea, but there is only 3,6m from floor to roof. If the garage was about 0,5meter higher, and maybe 20-40m2 bigger, it would have been a perfect opportunity for storage.

Okay, Thats not far away from me.. i live en Esbjerg :)
Thats make sense about the lifts, it Sounds like you have better use for a 2-post :)
I Think i Will go for scissor lift my self due to the limited space.. But i am to cheap to Throw the money after one hehe :)
But you suggested setup Will be allright then, you Can always tell your wife to park outside and get up 5 minutes before to remove the ice on the windscreen :D

Hi all.

Long time since last update.

The last two months I've been very busy at work and working "inside" the house. (Making bathroom)

As the sketchup draw shows, the garagedoor needs to be moved.
That is a running project now :) The outer bricks have been removed.

Thats how my weekend was spend.

I was trying to save the bricks, because it difficult to find bricks that match 40y old bricks. It dropped that, because I wanna paint the garage anyway.

Its great to see, that there is 100mm rockwool isolation :)

Another project is the "china" lift install.

The manual says installation only in minimum 25cm reinforced concrete.
My floor is 20cm, but very strong. I dont/hope it won't be a problem :)

The concrete anchors is in my opinion some ****.
In the one side, the anchors won't hold the bolt torque 120nm.
The I installed threaded 8.8 anchors in the floor. Using 2-component epoxy.
I dont think it will break :p

Towers installed.

My co-mechanic :)

Adjusting

This is the anchor bolts that I dont like :)
Very crappy.

All the anchors up again.

Now its done, time for testing.

After a bit of cleaning, its ready for my old crappy daily stationwagon :)

Nice.............

Next upcoming projects is:

Install my Stenhoej autolift witch is painted in Red epoxy paint. (Metalization, epoxy and polythane)
Install new windows
Install new garage door (3,4m X 2,6m)

See you in a month

I missed this build the first time around. It looks very nice ! Floor looks great with paint on it.

After pressure washing the floor, the heat gun helped to dry the floor.

In the US we would call that a "hot dog" (American sausage) or a "torpedo". Just helping you out with some American shop slang !

Denwood: Hopyfully 500hp at the engine this summer. If I can find the time to fix it :)

j schara: Actually I dont know. It was my fathers, who passed away for 3 years ago. As far as I know, it was an old police motorcycle, and it have got the full restoration for about 10-15years ago. Only driven few thousands mailes since. Because of bad Danish weather and to busy :)

Another little project today.

I made a raft? for the garagedoor.
3,85 x 0,27 x 0,27 (meters)

First I made a template in wood, fill in reinforcement, and then concrete.

Enjoy :)

Todays work :)

Inner wall removed where the new garage door shall be.

I had a friend helping me out. The weather was sunny, 7-10deg. 50%humidity. Really nice weather to work in.

Now when the wall is gone, the issue is, should I order a garage door in 2,6 meters high? Or should it be 3,1meter high, so my Tractor can get in.

Give me your opinion after you have seen the sketchup drawings.

Enjoy and thanks for watching.

We call the "raft" a lintel. Sometimes the mason will use a steel angle or "I" beam. Other times he will order a pre-made concrete lintel made to specifications. On masonry buildings in hurricane and seismic zones the lintels will be formed in place and tied into other reinforced concrete structural members such as pilasters and bond beams. I don't think I wave ever seen a lintel being formed and cast on the ground at a building site.

Will you paint the garage to match the house at some point? I like the brick but to me, it does not look "right" next to the white house.

Your garage/shop project is ambitious and I think you will be very pleased when you are finished. Give us more.

Bib overalls. The building Will have the same surface finish as the mail building. The Colour Will be some kind a antracit Grey, because I Think the building Will be far to long, if it is white also.

I like red brick buildings, but when I make this repair in the bricks they will never fit in, so you can't see it. Therefore it will be painted.

I made the lintel by my self because the price I got from the factory was about 1000 USD, this one costed me 50USD therefore I made it myself :)

Tomorrow I will post a picture of the whole building, so you all can see my idea with painting in another color

Hi again.

Since last time:

The outer wall is nearly finish. I had two bricklayers helping me. :)

The "brick lintels" over the windows were all defect, so these got removed, and new one got installed.

The garagedoor will arrive mid june.

My 2-post lift is finished at the paint shop. (At last) So maybe next weekend, I will be lucky to install it.

The floor in the garage need an other layer of polythane before installing lift. Hopefully I will find the time for that in the coming week.

Pictures of the work :)

My father in law helped me out :)

This was the job for today. All the topsoil have to be removed, and then 20cm sand and 20cm stabilgravel have to be applied. Then the finish gravel will be applied.

Hi all...

Finally I got my auto lift back from the paint shop.

It got painted in Red RAL3020 also called Traffic red.
Sadly its a bit more red than the Launch Lift, but thats okay.

If it find any time today, I will start assembly the threads in the towers. I dont think I have all the components to finish it today, because there is some safety contacts that is not okay.

But Helll... I look forward to that day, I can use my time on building cars instead of house and garage renovation. :3gears::3gears:

For the surface treatment nerds, the lift got grit blasted to an SA2-3(hopefully) metalized with 85%zink/15%alu (60my) and then epoxy and polythane topcoat.

The towers were a bit heavy. I feel it in my corpus today :)

Maybe there will be an update tonight (danish time)
