P: can you get pictures of the other side? also just noticed the crack or missing chunk on back of dynamic slide. it's still usable or a great parts vise with the huge wing nut and washer, pipe jaws, screw, retainer and all or just find a different dynamic and have a 100% old gem. can you get pics of the other side because i still think that is a Parker?

Bagged: that naked Reed is in my mind better looking than the red one. sorry Oldie.

I passed on this old school unknown brand. Maybe someone else knows details....

MrP, definitely an old school Parker or Athol. 1880s would be my guess. That through the bench design is not liked in the collecting market and the broken slide? Pass on it! I see one of these a week up here. In fact I just bought one, no pipe jaws in perfect condition but missing the plate and nut, for $25. I plan to turn it into a bench vise. Biggest knock on these that I have seen is that the jaws are very non-aggressive and don't hold well.

Here is a similar one, Athol again, down the street from me. Been up a month, great shape, seller has received no calls:

Hemi: that's like the pot calling the kettle black isn't it? have you lined up the vise family for some more pictures? if so please post an updated one.

Bagged: now find the Craftsman 5183 branded Reed that is your Reed's twin with 5 inch jaws. it was one of my favorite vises, but had to give it up to get my Reed 4c. i'm guessing your Reed is heading out the door because your shelf and benches can only hold so much, but that one would be almost a perfect vise for about 95% of us. thanks for the links to the 597 and i'll see if i can find the vise in them when i have more time.

I promise a family photo as soon as I can get everyone posed....I have plans to construct another robust set of shelves.....Unfortunately that project will be on the back burner until Thanksgiving and hunting season are over....I acquired a nice 5162 Craftsman yesterday......It is a clean, well cared for original....Just to show you the chaos in The Vise Retirement Home (TVRH) I've enclosed a picture of a Prentiss 19 double swiveler, Hollands 13-1/2 and a 9400 bullet all huddled together in a cardboard box.....Deplorable conditions as you can see.....:bounce::bounce:

Bagged: so would you say Reed or Parker is your favorite other than the Wiltons paying for your vise habit?

I'm going to have to say Parker is my overall favorite but Reed is a close 2nd.

Bagged: that naked Reed is in my mind better looking than the red one. sorry Oldie.

I don't like the 200R series Reed vises that much after owning one. The 204R in my opinion is not the best looking vise and I don't like the swivel action on it.

Mr P: That old vise you passed on has quite a pedigree. The August 1, 1865 patent was issued to H. B. Dart of the H.B. Smith Co. The earlier patent of June 20, 1854 was issued to a guy named Charles Parker. Ever heard of him? Here are some links:
http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?pn=49094&id=17057
http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?pn=11137&id=12500

By the way, just above the patent drawings there are numbers to click on to show more drawings and photos.

TO ALL: Here is a link to the home page of the Directory of American Tool and Machinery Patents if you're interested and haven't already found it.

Am wondering if anyone can tell me about this vise. The owner is asking $$ (not gunna reveal the price yet) for this Dawn (model 680a?) with quick release. I've been trying to figure out the size, but it looks huge mounted to that log. What would you pay?

A quick search only turned up the fact that Dawn is an Australian vise. Where have you been shopping? Check this page: http://scuttle.dayid.org/wiki/index.php/Dawn_Vise

I would get the Dawn, Australian company, vice is clearly in the English style and quick release is nice to have, it looks like a decent vice to. I bet there isn't many in the USA

Thanks Joe, Bagged, and CRS. I did end up passing on it, but I'll be flying or driving past here again in the spring, well see if it's still there. If I drive, I might just throw it in the trunk. I didn't want to deal with the logistics or TSA questions if I checked it as a bag.

Drives, here's one more photo I got. It didn't look like the slide was broken to me. Both sides were symmetrical. Probably designed that way....

Price was probably a little more than $1/lbs at $50

attachment.php

Or is it? Hmmm. I'll have to mic it when I come back because it may just be the angle of my picture...

Riley: i have a Dawn 6 incher that might weigh close to 80 pounds so no little thing, but not a quick release. the vise pictured might be close to that big, but hard to tell. i'd like a quick release vise again besides my old Massey and Dawn also makes a cool offset vice that would be great for vertical projects.

P: just saw your post and you are right that is the dynamic's design. other than missing a square nut it looks original with all it's parts. i agree somewhat with Joe about that style vise and most of the open screw vises, but you probably won't get that many chances to own a 150 year old vise especially for $50. maybe in vise rich New England, but the rest of the country was still driving around in covered wagons back then. bring an empty suitcase or just ship it to yourself if that happens again. it's not a huge loss not owning it, but it isn't bad.

Loydski29,---Very nice Quickset.---You did an exceptional job on it.---I love those Quicksets, I've got 4 of them.---They're pretty big and heavy for a table vise.---They don't look that big in pictures.---And that spring loaded QR is pretty nice.---they just fly open.---It's funny, I've seen them priced anywhere from $(9.00 to $89.00 on EBay.---I'll pick up one on the cheap.

By the way, WELCOME to the Journal.

Got the Reed 205 home and it weighs 90lbs, 15lbs lighter than my Parker 975. It's still one of my nicest vises!

While on the subject of small vises, here are two that I bid on in the last few days and got an education on.

Little Polish Bullet, right cute, I put down a catch-all bid of $85.00 through BidNip, (thanks Outlaw), and afterwards said to myself, "Grouseman , what have you done, are you crazy.---Well not to worry, it won't go for more than $45.00 anyway.---Went for $115.00 and $11.00 shipping.:scared:---I shook it off.---Spilt milk

Had another one I was going to bid on, even better.---Really nice Rhode Island ball based vise.---Never seen one before.---Had to have it.---Figured it was as close as I was ever going to come to a Parkinson Ball Base---Laid down a catch-all bids of $225.00 through BidNip, (thanks Outlaw), and then said to myself, Grouseman, have you lost your mind.---Well not to worry, won't go for more than $150.00 at best.---Went for$316.00 and $20.00 shipping.:shocking::shocking::scared::scared:---WHAAAAAAAAAT?

Fellows, I fear we have done this to ourselves.---I used to buy vises off EBay, back in 2009 and 2010, as low as Joe and Bagged are snatching off the street today.---Glad I picked up a few when I could.---But even a blind hog will find an acorn once in a while.

Friction: thanks for posting the link to Dayid's and i've saved it to my favorites, but my laptop keeps crashing so i might have to ask again. nice to see you are still around and has your vise family grown lately and how about a picture or two?

Unfortunately no new iron lately. If anything new pops up pics will be posted.

Final touch was some nice jaws and a few good pointers from KMScott. Craftsman 5166 Completed and ready for service. Due to how the swivel is, I'm going to make some ears out of 3/4" to go off my workbench (at work, so it's actually used everyday) so when it's at it maximum tightness to the swivel, it will be in my prime work position. Then if I need to swivel it, I still have room to keep the inside jaw outside of the bench frame.

I'm going to do the stand next. Put on the mill to redo all the torch cuts and mount my Record 634 on it.

Nice pickup Hemi! I just had these shipped to me to restore. A pair of 1930's Craftsman . The customer wants them done with a military theme. One battle ship gray with USN anchors on it ! The other to look like a ammo can. OD green with yellow lettering then topped off with the punisher...Can't wait to get to them!

JR: there were a few other vises involved because it wasn't a one for one deal. I would still like to own a Craftsman 5183 maybe more than a 5198 since i already own a 5196 and 5197. or the Craftsman 300 pounder that has yet to surface

how is your 4C coming along and take lots of pictures and post on the 101 thread because i'm sure it was a challenge just getting all the parts.

I was watching both of those, didn't even put my name in the hat before they went past what i was willing to pay.

I agree that this thread has raised the values on fleabay, I've only been looking for the last couple of years and to me it's very noticeable.

Hemi - Thanks. Yes I did... arrived today. Its better than those photos on ebay. Cost me a little more than I expected but the seller accepted my offer. He has a 5163 that's OK but too many divots all over the top and anvil. My 5162 is near perfect, its got some surface rust because I've had it in storage since 1980.

This 5161 is just the right size for my bench. Both will probably get cleaned up and oiled. I'll post some pics of the 5161 this weekend..

I think I saw your 5162 on ebay.. I looked at it and was tempted to ****** it up but I'm really looking for a nice unrestored 5163.

There's been some nice Craftsman vises on ebay lately..

It's not. Vise season is over. New job, very pregnant wife, and now a winter storm on the way has officially closed the season. The last thing I did was file the high spots off the 577 to get it in 2 pieces.

Congrats on the kid on the way! My wife is pregnant with our second too. Come spring, I might not have much time to play with vises either.
