Get, I don't think that ids a bird logo; looks like an "M" on top of a "W" (Monkey Wards? and further stylized to resemble a stick man? :dunno:

Tuff to keep up with this thread you must get 20 posts a day. Who knew there were so many retirees with vise envy.

OK, so I'm blind and retired
"Mystery Works" vise company it is.

Last day of scrounging today. Delivered a 6" Parker swiveler to my buddy in VT, then went antiquing.

Found this 3" Wilton in very clean shape, pd 150, but itvis very straight.

Then this 6", 140 lb Blacksmith vise. My buddy in VT picked it up for me this summer. Owner gave it to me...long story. Anyway finally got it.

Nice save on that Chicago bullet.
What happened to the old jaw inserts to force you into adding shims behind 'em?
Maybe not the originals?

I think the damage (broke pins, missing handle, and welding repair) was the result when someone tried to force the vise open when stuck. It looks like massive amounts of heat was applied and they even (slightly) bent the jaws causing a 1/8" gap in the jaws when fully closed. My fix was to add 1/8" spacer behind one of the jaws so they would clamp when in the closed position.

Isn't it amazing how some people can literally destroy something?.....I have a C1 that isn't nearly as bad that I am trying to resuscitate.....
Hemi

Indeed! I was very let down when I tore it apart and saw all of the damage that this once fine vise had sustained. It should now outlast me as a functioning piece.

Keep up the good work!

Jarhead: more of a light duty vise and anvil so more of a collectible for the shelf. seen priced in the $20 to $150 range and depends if mounting holes are all there and nothing broken or cracked. it looks pretty decent from the picture you posted.

Small, no-name. Great detail and lots of "real" vise features.

dk
You got a Prentiss Jeweler's vise. There are probably about a dozen of them listed in this thread. There are a number of flavors: fixed base, fixed jaw; fixed based, swivel jaw, swivel base, fixed jaw; swivel base, swivel jaw. There are painted versions and nickel plated ones as well.

Usually these vises are faintly stamped PVC on the front jaw.

If you got a month or two, go through the thread and check them all out.

Thanks for the info.

I've seen these small vises here before but never really paid attention to them. Now that I have one I'm impressed by the quality and detail. A real handle with ball-ends; jaws that appear to be cast in place...

Welcome to the forum. I prefer electrolysis for rust removal on a vise that is completely rusted and doesn't want to open and close. Here is a link to a thread with good info on electrolysis.

Homemade electrolysis. What do you use?
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=237752

Another option is to just soak the vise in a good rust penetrant for a few days. My preferred penetrant is a mixture it 50% acetone and 50% transmission fluid. It is night and day from the wd40 I used to use. Then just go to town with a wire wheel.

Post some pictures of what you are dealing with if you can.

Mali: Welcome to the forum. Did you notice that the logo on the vise you are trying to identify is the same as the logo on the vise that GETRIDAONE is trying to identify in post #38242? Outlaw replied in post #38245. If you restore your vice please post more pictures. Again, welcome to the forum. By the way, what part of the planet are you from?

NYPDblue: Welcome to you too. I hope you go through with the restoration of your Parker. Be sure to post more pictures. I probably don't have to ask where you're from. Are you with the PD or just a fan of the show?

GET and Outlaw: Did you notice that the logo on GET's vise was the same as Mali's? The vise itself doesn't look like something that Wards would have sold but stranger things have happened. If he's correct that it weighs 55 kg it's a big one too.

UPDATE: Mali says he found that vise in Poland. He didn't buy it but he was curious as to the maker. See post #38277

Overpriced deals abound! (although this one is hardly unique)
Here is one from the Los Angeles area Craigslist.
Seller claims that it was made in the USA and admits that it has a slightly bent slide!
Such a deal!!! Only $190.00

(I wonder where this guy got the idea to display vises on big stumps?)

Thank you very much Outlawmws and CRSINMICH for your answers.
I'm not a owner of the vise from post #38239. I've found the vise in the local advert and I was really curious who manufactured it.

I live in Poland and recently I've bought the Columbian vise no. 60-3 vise on flea market. I was really surprised when I saw American vise in Poland. American vise in Poland is a very rare item.
I'm going to paint the vise and maybe I will change the jaw face (this one attached by screws). I've burnished awful green paint and now it looks much better.

Excellent find Mali. Keeping a close eye on the classifieds for an American vise here in holland and the are rare indeed this side of the pond.

Mali: Look back at post #38269. Bagged posted a picture of a page from an old catalog. A Columbian 603 is on the bottom right hand side of that page. Check out the price it sold for new way back when.

So my mystery Wilton ended up being a Wilton Chicago 840. I was a little worried about the condition when it arrived in this box just wrapped and packaged in shipping paper.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1448308878.723870.jpg
Luckily the vise only weighs 38 lbs. It made it though.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1448308910.133289.jpg

Anyone know if these Wiltons had swivel locks or just acorn nuts? If it's supposed to have swivel locks, does anyone know the specs of the swivel locks?

The only information I have for you is this picture. I'd have to double check but I believe it was made in 1953.

Finally got that mystery vise. It is a Parker 41. Bigger than I thought. Here are some initial pics.

BAD: Rusted closed, silver brazed jaw, clamp nut broken on the bottom bolt getting it off, handle bent.

GOOD: Jaws are clean, slide is immaculate, rotating jaw is REAL cool

Veeps I think these were the original style used on your 830. If your date stamp is in the 40's then a Acorn nut is all the room you have. Wilton made a mistake on the early vises and had the carriage bolt holes to close to the body. Nice vise.

OK, so dont judge me, i just bought 6 vises, 2 Columbians, 1 Yost, 1 Rock Island, 1 Athol 4", 1 Athol 4.5". Pd $200 for all 6.... no room in the garage. Dont judge me. I have a problem.

I think I'm have a tag sale Saturday, time to thin the herd of vises. If ANYONE on this board wants a deal pm me and I'll give you a Garage Journal deal. I live in Agawam MA. I'm selling stuff I dont want to restore.

I've added the vice sections of the 1935, 1950, and 1963 Record catalogues to the dropbox download link in my signature. There are some parts diagrams as well in the Record catalogues if they are of use to anybody. The PDF's are quite large as I wanted to keep the quality up.

Thanks kevin. I looked at it quick and I think it said 1949. But there is an indent for what I think is for a lockdown? Maybe I'm wrong.

Edit: I went out to the garage to soak the jaw screws in penetrant and the date stamp is 4/1946.

I also checked the dimensions of the 5" Chicago bullet swivel base and lockdowns I have and there are much larger than the dimensions you have for the 4" swivel lockdown.

Looks like you run a scrapyard. My wife would not be happy about all those vises and other stuff in the yard. Haha.

Joe: At the prices you pay you dont need the 12 step vice for vises program you just need to rent somebody's garage or storage unit. I wish I could tell you to put them all on a pallet and ship them to me but not today. Good luck with that love for vises (vices) and old steel and cast iron you have because its hard to remove.

I am pretty sure your 1946/1941 vise uses Acorn nuts. They added the cutout for a wrench. If your hole center line is less then a 1/2 inch then no room for swivel locks. The picture you posted has a issue with the center 1/2 dia pin that locates the base to the Static jaw support.

5" lock downs are much bigger and use the 5/8:11 thread on the early vises and 1" dia lock downs on the newer vises instead of the hex locks.

Share your date stamp pic's on the date stamp post. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=269079&page=18 Bluebolt would appreciate it.
