I am pretty sure your 1946/1941 vise uses Acorn nuts. They added the cutout for a wrench. If your hole center line is less then a 1/2 inch then no room for swivel locks. The picture you posted has a issue with the center 1/2 dia pin that locates the base to the Static jaw support.

5" lock downs are much bigger and use the 5/8:11 thread on the early vises and 1" dia lock downs on the newer vises instead of the hex locks.

Share your date stamp pic's on the date stamp post. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=269079&page=18 Bluebolt would appreciate it.

Thanks for the info Kevin. Yes I noticed the issue with the center pin when I first saw the vise as well. I was worried there could be a crack where the pin sits. Luckily just the pin is missing.

CW: Thanks for doing that and ill check them out later when I'm on my laptop.

Bagged: Pretty sure the square nut isn't original and think acorn nuts were. There are a ton of 1946 stamped bullets in the Wilton date stamp thread so you can see. Somebody on the 101 thread made tall nuts on a lathe, but can't remember who so check it out too because I think it was in the last couple months.

Finally got that mystery vise. It is a Parker 41. Bigger than I thought. Here are some initial pics.

BAD: Rusted closed, silver brazed jaw, clamp nut broken on the bottom bolt getting it off, handle bent.

GOOD: Jaws are clean, slide is immaculate, rotating jaw is REAL cool

Nice old one. It is shown in the dodge, haley hardware book from 1887
sorry the pic is side ways...:dunno:

Hi, my name is Joe. It has been 2 hours since I bought a vise. I have a vice...vises.

OK, so dont judge me, i just bought 6 vises, 2 Columbians, 1 Yost, 1 Rock Island, 1 Athol 4", 1 Athol 4.5". Pd $200 for all 6.... no room in the garage. Dont judge me. I have a problem.

I think I'm have a tag sale Saturday, time to thin the herd of vises. If ANYONE on this board wants a deal pm me and I'll give you a Garage Journal deal. I live in Agawam MA. I'm selling stuff I dont want to restore.

The "don't judge me!" comment made me laugh out loud. My daughter blurts that out every time I catch her with Oreos (For some reason she feels guilty about it - it's a teenage girl thing).

I don't mean to nit-pick, but I count more than 6 vises in that picture. Perhaps the extra vises were already there or maybe your problem is bigger than you think?!? I'm here for you - let me help you carry the burden!

Joe:
Reading this, I got a mental image of a big space so full of vises that it looked like an episode of the TV show "Hoarders" where somebody has a house with things stacked up a couple feet deep so they have to walk on stuff to get to their bed, and so much stuff in the kitchen that the sink and stove and all the countertops are buried and completely unusable. More stuff stacked up to the ceiling and falling on their heads when they move a single item.
I hope it isn't THAT bad...:willy_nil

Anyway...congrats on your decision to sell some; sounds like a smart move

Lots of high quality vises go for over a grand.
As far as I know, the Bugatti is the most expensive vise.

I will let somebody else chime in if they know of a particular auction amount but I'm sure it was in 5 figures.

Of course it is a collectible more than anything else, so perhaps it isn't a fair comparison to a monster Columbian used to grip train axles.

Update:
Over on the mig welding forum, 5 years ago, a member said that an NOS one, still in the crate sold for $76,000

In many places you can buy a decent 4 br. 2ba. house for less than that!

Hello, bagged89s10 you are right few days ago I contacted with you when I was looking information about Columbian vise no. 603
Thank you CRSINMICH for useful hints

Here http://scuttle.dayid.org/wiki/index.php/Columbian_Vise
I've found that Columbian 603 was produced since 1926 but in
Beckley-Ralston catalog from 1920 you can also find this model (see post
#48) http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62716&page=3

I decided to contact with guys from JPW Industries because they are owner of the Wilton and Columbian brand. I didn't get any useful information because they don't have any records from the 20’s,30’s, or 40’s. They suggested me looking data in old catalogs.

I have sent my request to Smithsonian Libraries. If I get useful information about Columbian company and vise no. 603 I will share with you.

No probs Dutch, the Parkinson one was sent to me already scanned. The Record ones are quite interesting as well as are the early B&H ones as there are a few vices amongst those that I've not seen anywhere else.

It must have been twofer day at local estate sales. At the first one I went to, I got a no-name clamp-on with 2½ jaws and a tiny Columbian M4 - twofer $10. At the second one, I picked up yet another 3½ Craftsman and a Versa Vise – twofer $15.

Picked up this Prentiss 182 at a yard sale last weekend for $30 (also got the Metabo grinder for $30 and Victor regulators for $15 each, pretty good haul for a Sunday.) This vise is a beast, probably weighs 80 lbs. It has a chunk knocked out of the slide but still works fine. Has a "93" cast in the bottom of the base, could that be the year it was made, as in 1893?

dittle: I really don't know what Versa had in mind for those jaws. Usually jaws of that shape are for sheet metal work but this vise is a bit too light duty for that. They could work for wood I suppose. Anyone else know?

When I went to the sale the "shop" part was about 5 ft. by 8 ft. and crammed from floor to rafters. I had to find the seller and bring him back to the shop because nothing had a price on it. I pointed to the Cman and asked how much. He said "I thought you meant the one on the floor" then reached down and brought up the Versa. When he asked how much I wanted to pay, I opened with $15. He said, "For both?" Me: "Uh... yeah, that's what I meant." Sold

Thanks P. Actually I only own three now. They've been slipping out of the garage when I'm not looking.

EDIT: Make that four; Damn, I really thought I was making progress.

Posted this one about a month ago and could use some help with determining the age as I have not found any info on this era Reed. Is there a date code stamped on these? The only numbers I found was a 648 to the right of the MFG CO letters in the first photo.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but could that 648 be an upside down 879? I don't know what either number means but it might be significant.

By the way, I was complimented on my yard art earlier. Yours is much better.

Well, the full view picture is from the CL ad, so not my yard :D

I figured this one was a bit newer, but it is still a very well made vise. In looking more closely at those numbers, the middle one may not be a 4... it almost looks like a delta sign :dunno:

Whatever the number is, you've got a great vise.

Picked this up today from Craigslist for $20. A friend of my wife and I's boyfriend mentioned he didn't have a bench vise so I told him I'd look. No markings that I can see anywhere. Weighs about 43 lbs. Any ideas about who made it? More importantly, am I going to feel rotten having him give me the $20 I spent on it?

Twofer Tuesdays eh. What's next, buying 10 at a time? Watch out for this addiction you warn us about. You'll end up like Joe with vises lined up for a turn at resting in his shop.
Great deals though on some nice brands. You ****!:rocker:

Saw this 5 inch Larin dual swivel (rotating) vise on CL - - - See the Craigslist Deal thread on GJ - - - - and seller claims it's from 80's and Made in USA??

That true ???

Wants $125 but it just went on. If it stays on CL for months, this might be a good welding vise !! ;) . . . ie for greatly reduced negotiated price !!

Actually, until this spate of twofers, I had slowed down quite a bit but when fate throws vises at your feet what ya gonna do? Nice to hear from you again. I keep my eyes peeled for vices out your way but things have dried up with the end of flea market and garage sale season. Enjoy your holiday.
