Here is my vintage box I'm slowly restoring......and slowly is a understatement lol.
It is a Snap On KR-562, it was built in 1976. It was covered in years of grease and grime. Under it all it wasn't to beat up. I have all new slides for it, new locks and lock hardware, new castors and trim courtesy of Snap On. Only charged for the trim. Here's my dilemma though and feel free to give your opinions.
If you're box is in good shape(no serious rust, bends), I'd replace the parts you have and clean the dickens out of it and call it good. These aren't 429 Mustangs or Hemi Cudas, in my eyes they don't have to be 100% "period" correct. Besides for something that's almost 40 years old, the box could be on the 3rd or 4th set of drawer slides or locks. I'll take new and functioning over broken and original.
Stripping down and re-finishing these boxes sounds deceptively simple. It's a lot of work and it's time consuming of you want it done to a high standard. I've done a couple of Snap On boxes and it was a ton of time and effort. If you're not a body man or painter, it's good practice and pretty forgiving as a first sheet metal/paint project. Good luck and post some more pics!
