I am drooling very nice set up. I like the birdseye view of the set up. I will have to make a contribution to the thread now.

Today the TV is getting hung, so that will give me a little more room to play with. I'd do "birdseye" views of them all but the darker shot (where the S-K stack is) is under the mezzanine. Out of all of them though, "the twins" are my favorites. Home / Shop made and unbelievably heavy. Not sure why the put a handle on top, they're probably close to 70# empty.........Ask Cypherian:bounce:

I picked this up this morning for $80. ZKLING! Really like your (and others) opinion on the maker? I'm thinking MBC because of the corner folds, draw pull design and side handles. Cannot find a stamp anywhere, certainly not in the usual Waterloo suspect locations. Here you can find the detailed shots of each box.

Well, that was a deal. :spit: Yes they are MBC boxes, they should be stamped, somewhere IIRC. Bright light odd angles, you know the drill. The scalloped drawer pull ends are MBC exclusive, IIRC :headscrat:

They were made when men were men and vise grips were made in Nebraska.[emoji4]

I have a few toolboxes to choose from.

Vintage Craftsman 2 drawer box and a vintage Wizard box - both came from the same thrift store - $8.95 and $15.95 (Wizard came with tools) respectively.

I bought this set of boxes from my neighbor around 1978. Be bought them, brand new in the cardboard boxes, in 1965 from the Mac Tools truck. They are MBC boxes. Maybe MBC was making MAC boxes then? He paid $46 for the top box and $66 for the bottom box. I recently replaced the locks as I had no keys. I also replaced the chrome handles this week with new ones I found online. Nearly identical are the replacement handles at a whopping $1.59 each. With new lube on the drawer slides they work very smoothly given that they are not roller slides. It should outlast me. I am hoping that Santa Claus brings a middle box to me as I need a little more storage space. I do wish that he hadn't applied those stickers to it. Time to get out the heat gun I guess. CJDave.

Nice setup dave!

I have a suggestion however: Consider moving the top to the front edge, and using the resulting back ledge as storage for something (I have my slide hammer box and some other stuff back there on one stack, but maybe shop chemicals? :dunno: )

This prevents the "flat surface junk collection rule" from blocking one or more drawers on the top box... (A problem on my Vintage Craftsman stack...)

That is an idea Outlawmws. I'll give that arrangement some thought. I never considered doing that as this is the way they were set-up when I bought them. Thanks. CJDave.

Does anyone have the overall dimensions of this MATCO box? I'm being tempted by it!

EDIT: OK I think I found it: MB 1400 51 X 24 X 46-1/2 tall? amirite?

Can anyone confirm?

Pretty sure that is correct. All friction slides. Someone added two pulls to the top drawer. Heavy box.

Do you happen to know if the drawers are full depth front to back? I saw a comment elsewhere that these had a storage compartment in the back? (I hope not...)

Fairly certain it does not. The one that had a back compartment was a shorter (length) box and did not have a full width top drawer. A friend of mine has the more modern ball bearing, long drawer pull version of that box and it has no compartment on the back.

Here's mine: Craftsman, I guess from the 1950's or so..

Picked up the lower half a few years ago and was lucky enough to recently find the upper chest from a seller just a few miles from me.

Here is my vintage box I'm slowly restoring......and slowly is a understatement lol. f627040477f12f27e6dfa5f28b7de8c4.jpg

It is a Snap On KR-562, it was built in 1976. It was covered in years of grease and grime. Under it all it wasn't to beat up. I have all new slides for it, new locks and lock hardware, new castors and trim courtesy of Snap On. Only charged for the trim. Here's my dilemma though and feel free to give your opinions. The box is missing a lot of stuff to get back to factory. The rubber ends for the handle, the old emblems and the brake these boxes originally had. Also the castors are not a direct replacement either so all this has got me thinking about a true custom job. Painting it to match my other box and using new style emblems. It's not something I'm doing to resell, I wanted one as soon as I seen it on, wait for it, Garage Journal. Softtailgarage got me in to this project lol. As far as the handle, Snap On sent me a KRA handle that does bolt up. So handle, castors and logos all would be non factory. Sorry for the long post.

Inside, they are both a little used but serviceable and have the flying lady, which I love.

MrKona, look behind the labels on the inside of the drawer fronts. Often that era has markings stamped in and sometimes a year date.

Good call! Nothing on the lower chest, but on the upper, it says "Advertising Metal Display Co., Chicago, USA" and a "57", which I assume means 1957.

If you're box is in good shape(no serious rust, bends), I'd replace the parts you have and clean the dickens out of it and call it good. These aren't 429 Mustangs or Hemi Cudas, in my eyes they don't have to be 100% "period" correct. Besides for something that's almost 40 years old, the box could be on the 3rd or 4th set of drawer slides or locks. I'll take new and functioning over broken and original.

Stripping down and re-finishing these boxes sounds deceptively simple. It's a lot of work and it's time consuming of you want it done to a high standard. I've done a couple of Snap On boxes and it was a ton of time and effort. If you're not a body man or painter, it's good practice and pretty forgiving as a first sheet metal/paint project. Good luck and post some more pics!

Here's a pick of the other cabinet on back, also a sliding door set up.

Thanks for the replies so far. I've worked at the same shop for years and never noticed this box. When I seen it the guy just had it rotting away so I made him a offer and he took it.

$100 for the pair. Craftsman badged Kennedy 526 (?) but no latches or top handle on lid and drawer slide latches are thicker than Kennedy MC28 mid box. Brown felt lining. Machinist sticker was on the Craftsman. There's a 4" version stuck on back. Missing the slide cover. No keys. Don't know ages.

100 clams for that pair is a great deal.
of course the bottom is a kennedy, but i believe the top is a waterloo made craftsman.
