Are you referring to the vise in your post #39123?

The vise in #39123 is a No. 6, not a No. 60. The model 60 is a swivel jaw. The swivel jaw is a much less common model then the fixed jaw. BTW - I posted a No. 6 in the Wilton date thread dated 1953.

What your friend has is very rare, a mis-marked Wilton No. 6.

As has been said, Wilton must have had stuff laying around and used it as they found it - every now and then someone has to get to the bottom of the bin...

JKB

That is very interesting. I'm sure he'll like that even more. I know without this thread I'd have thought it was a early 40's. As I've said before, I defer to the knowledge here because it is a boatload more than mine.

One good thing for me is that he'll need one of those 5 extra cans of paint I had to buy when I re-did mine. :D

My 1st r.island. Was hoping for a nice r.island, but couldn't help but to rescue it for $1 at the flea market this morning. 443 with pipe vise.

Guess on age?

Awww, its plenty nice. Exposed screw vises need love too.
Can't help for age but I'd bet it's pre Birtman Electric .

Thanks gany. I thought this design was different then what I've usually seen from the era. I usually (usually) walk past exposed lead screws. Usually. It'll look neat after a dip in the e tank

I stumbled across this yesterday. Is it something that any of guys would want? I could go back and pick it up.

This was another one there.

Yours is missing the swivel base, the long bottom bolt made topop think it was an early through the bench mount I bet. My guess is mid 30's to 50 ??
I don't remember what I paid but probably not more than $5 - $10. As you can see it has BBS (bent bar syndrome) causing JWC (jaws won't close)

I keep finding these mini vises. You might think that I could pass them by, but you'd be wrong. The new vise the blue vise has 1 1/4 inch jaws. The red mini was collected a few days ago. It's has 1 inch jaws. They are both rear dynamic jaws.

Boring, OR (yes, it's called Boring!)
Selling my Parker #436 vise - all 187 pounds of it

The Parker #436 vise is 187 pounds and all tuned up!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/231784150300?

After having this beauty for a few years and rebuilding it, I finally got a Wilton 6", which for me is the most appropriate vise.

I replaced the original Parker screw clip with one of my own devising so the screw runs like butter, and has minimal backlash as well. But, the original clip is included.

My vise-base now has:

  • Wilton 6" Bullet with pipe jaws (no pics yet!)
  • Wilton 3" old-timer mounted on my Quick-Acting Bowling-Ball Vise Mount ( www.charleswaugh.com/vise] ) A MUST-SEE!
  • Wilton 2" Baby vise with anvil on a ball-mount base (seen next to the Starrett)
  • Starrett 924-1/2 with smooth jaws

On my other bench I have: (can be seen in the Ebay ad for the Parker)
Emmert K1 vise (18" wide jaws)
Wilton quick-acting woodworker's vise

Back on page 1935 and 1936, from post 38694 to 38708, we had a lengthy discussion about Columbians and Malleable steel, and if there were any damaged Columbians made of malleable steel.---I found one of them with a hole in the tower, that I had seen before.---I don't know how to just repost the pics but you can see it on page 12, post 221.---If anyone is interested.

What the heck ! That poor Columbian!
It looks like Ellen Ripley and the Colonial Space Marines used that vise to clamp an Alien and dissect it.!

CRS, you need to post those in the Tiny Tools thread!

I really dig that little blue one! Nice vise.

(I hope that is correct usage of little. I have been corrected in the past.)

I think it's safe to call either of these vises "little". "Tiny" might be more accurate.

My no 60 sj is finally fully functional, and now mounted and put to work. It's not completed yet, but when I get some time I'll finish it off. I'm going to put leather soft jaws on it for sure, new shoulder bolt, and maybe replace the outer base ring and paint it. Or maybe not?!

Thanks Outlaw.---That was a simple procedure.---I think it was exactly the same thing that Drive instructed me one other time and I just couldn't hit the right combo.---But such is the workings of a weak mind.

Charles W.---Pretty nifty, a bowling ball breaking system stand.---How did you come up with that idea?

Mike F.---You will be pleased with the 150 York.---I have one of those and they are stout and stocky and built for heavy duty work.---The garage where we get our cars inspected has used a 150 York for over 35 years and it is absolutely criminal how they abuse that thing on a daily basis.---It's still hanging tight.

Charles, what did you make this horseshoe blade out of? Kind of looks like brass. Interesting.

Certainly damaged goods, but it doesn't look like it's from the stresses of hammering or clamping.

It looks like someone was burning with a torch and melted the jaw. Reminds me of the Top Gear BBC episode titled "Killing a Toyota" where they abuse an Aussie-made Toyota Hilux truck to try to make it fail.

Here's a quick summary of my Record 634, snapped it up for £50 just up the road from me. Not in such bad condition, just missing some vice jaws and a lick of paint.

mfcYb7r.jpg

Not a complex mechanism but when you strip it apart, it gets bigger! And doesn't get much lighter either. Each piece is a back breaking lump of iron.

HAmjuuF.jpg

Virtually destroyed the screws getting the jaws off after 10 minutes each with a blowtorch.

SpOXZ3y.jpg

They got welded up with a TIG and recut with a doubled up hacksaw.

PStZWFo.jpg

aFTjvJ7.jpg

Made up some new pipe jaws from a bit of stock steel.

6ufOLde.jpg

Painted with blue hammerite, toned down with a bit of black. All done.

Screwd.
