ALL: great stuff today. much better than the usual price talking. i agree that the older vises like Prentiss might also have had the back slides cracked because the users were used to a blacksmith vise or a user of one thinking the new designs could get pounded on. it might have had a weak point in the Prentiss design, but betting all those cracks were from a BFH and user. we have many members of GJ that almost come to blows and name calling if I (we) mention that a vise was designed as a third hand and not something to be pounded on. as i've said when i was a wee lad i would go with my Gramps to the logging equipment repair shops and see a worker putting a 3 or 4 foot piece of pipe on a vise's handle and putting all his weight on it to tighten something in the vise and beat the **** out of it. a bench vise IS NOT a blacksmith vise.

not sure why Columbian isn't in my top 5 or maybe 10 because they are nice vises. i even have passed on some with the old round type handles that are similar to Rock Island and Reeds. maybe Columbian and Wilton are not my favorites because they make cheap vises too unlike Reed, Prentiss, Athol (Starrett), Rock Island.

I'm still learning to speak "METAL" and really like what's been said today. thanks

Isaiah: nice find on the York and it was probably copied by Wilton and made into maybe the most recognized vise in the world then and now. I'm guessing the hole in the back of the vise is for a pin that should hold the vise nut in place sort of like the design for the old Leinen German vices. since i don't own a York (yet) maybe one of the other guys can say.

Bagged: your vise restorations have been great so far so if you think the belt sander can give you something better then good luck with that.

hey drives simple put a lot of people abuse their tools and vises!

Veeps, make your knobs this way, you do not need a radius cutter, just a angle grinder with a sanding disc. I drill and ream a nominal sized pilot hole in the knob that slips over a machined step on the handle ends. .001 clearance is a fit I like. I use a 36 grit sanding disc backed up by a plastic pad. You can get very close doing it this way. Then go to a Hook and Loop Nylon Mesh pads http://www.mcmaster.com/#46555a58/=1098yll then I follow up by filing the heavy scratches out and use 100 grit sandpaper to smooth out the filing marks. Finish up by using the red Scotch Brite pads. You go further in the finish then me. Add a chamfer so you can peen it to the handle. After a couple they get real easy.

Seems that Ganymede was correct in that Parker used the top screw for the collar at one time. I guess the conclusion is that Parker branded the vises for Howard Iron.

Is this a good price on this anvil? Found on Craigslist Portland Oregon.

:dunno:

I've been looking at this posting off and on for months. I don't know enough about anvils to make an intelligent comment, so I'll defer on its value. However, I wouldn't touch it for that price - and based on how it's been listed and relisted, I'd say most everyone else feels the same.

It is a bit high ...At least for my area. 3 bucks a pound for a high quality anvil and that one is. Plus the stand so...

Here is some Parker stuff kind of interesting. Note the copper caps and the widths they made which means all the jaw widths they made and the steel bar they cast into the square slide. Not to many Parker's have cracked slides like the Prentiss's, I wonder if this bar helps that issue. Got a kick out of throwing a 29X out of a airplane to test it's strength.

Oldie, yep plenty of snow, two hours of plowing Monday and then the wind shows up to push it where you don't want it. Shop is 45 degrees till noon then it warms up to 55. Just about used to it again.

AJH &VA, I can't recall any 400 or 500 series with the through bolt holding the jaws. But I definitely have see the C3 use the jaw configuration on some older models.

A simple Google search for "Wilton C3 vise" and then clicking images gives the above result. You can see the red one, 3rd or 4th row down is pretty old, Schiller Park

Yea FMC, You are right about the C3s.---You can rarely check the Wiltons on EBay without seeing a C3 with the indented jaws.---I like that style better than the newer ones.

Sorry, I wish I was more up on the history of Parker's. My time is spent on the mechanics of these vises and making the parts to put some back together. I posted these articles after seeing your post yesterday thinking someone might offer information on your vise. Customers send me pictures and interesting articles that I share. Very nice vise you have and interesting to see the stamp no.2 Parker Meriden CT on the jaw tops. Shows how much your vise has not been used.

Finished this this up for a buddy's Christmas present I think he will be happy!

Beautiful job, Loydski!

If your buddy isn't happy with THAT biggie, something is wrong with him.
If he would rather have a much smaller vise with battle scars, tell him I'd be happy to trade! :)

The Wilton 840 finished. New handle made from 1144 stressproof rod. New jaws from Kevin Scott. Polished main screw nose and rear dust cap. Smooth anvil surface and jaw towers. Hammerite light blue paint. I had to make a new swivel base center pin and the dynamic jaw was sagging a little and had some slop. To fix the problem, I removed the keyway and sandwiched in some shim stock to take up any play. It lines up almost perfect and opens and closes perfectly without any side to side slop. I'm really happy with this one and got to learn how to make a handle in the process.

What an awesome job on the Wilton. I really like the combination of bare metal finishing with some polished and some the brushed look. Paint cam out fantastic.

Beautiful bagged! Great work!

I'd like to put jaw covers on my little Athol 2 1/2". Anyone use aluminum jaw covers? I was also thinking brass. Really, I just want something to protect the jaws on the vise. What's the opinion brass vs aluminum?

Veeps you got the touch. Whats next...

Using the keyway as a riser is an original idea. Again top notch restore. You are stepping up the quality of restorations being shown here.

Thanks You

WOW!!!

Thanks, I posted 2 of my favorite personal restorations.

Bagged, totally awesome. Your skills are growing with leaps & bounds each vise you do.

You should get the "Master Vise-Smith" award for 2015
Thanks FMC. I'm learning as I go. I'm far from a master.

Excellent Bagged.!The main screw knob turned out amazing! How did you get all the pitting out?
Thanks topop. I put it on the lathe and took a grinder to it, then smoothed it out on the belt sander. Then did final cleanup on the lathe.

Thanks. I like the way it came out to. I was going to polish the jaws at first, but the hardened jaws would have taken ages to sand smooth.

bagged89s10,

Magnificent work! Well done.:)
Thanks. It will be calling home on your side of the pond in Belgium

Beautiful bagged! Great work!

Thanks evergreen. I also want to make some jaw covers for my Parker vises. I wonder if I can find some copper somewhere

Thanks Kevin. Your jaws added the final touch. And boy are they hard! And they fit perfect!

Next is a Columbian 203-1/2. Do you make these T style jaws?
