EG: maybe a prior owner liked the Reed vise's method of the hole in their slides to oil or grease the main screw, but it wasn't standard on any Monarch i've owned or seen. good to hear the slide is in great shape other than the hole and the hole shouldn't hurt anything.

as far as naked finishes i've used Johnson paste wax and BLO. Fretters tried shoe polish with success and in the vise repair 101 thread i think maybe around Thanksgiving Fretters made up a recipe with Beeswax and a few other ingredients that i think he likes and we talked about in on a few posts.

other members might have other methods i can't remember at the moment and maybe they will share if they see your post.

AutoPts: did you get a decent price for that old Parker with the welded dynamic. nothing like showing off the weld and the strength of it. thanks for posting that picture with the bricks.

I've tried penetrol on a bare vise.

Thanks bagged. I was just reading your posts about it, but went with blo bc I had it. I question for you, if I decide to put it back in the e tank, I should prob remove the blo? Any trick on that?

EG:

TJ: your skills painting that bright GREEN are improving with every vise you do. I'm sorry that you had to paint that twice after removing the first process, but you did the right thing because that C3 POPS.

DRIVES: Maybe due to the recent Star Wars hype, all I read was "C3PO".... perhaps inspiration for a new vise finish.

Good question. I never thought of how to remove BLO. I would probably just toss it in the etank. :dunno:

Mark, do you remember this one? It was brazed completely around it. It held the bricks up well. Have a nice holiday.

Auto,
I like how you featured the repair job. When I first saw the picture, it scared me. I thought it was mine (see avatar). :scared: Is it a 205? Is it painted with Rustoleum red striping paint?

I hope the holiday season is good to you as well. :)

I ran into this beast while surfing for vice projects. Not going to say no for twenty quid.

It's a six inch Bison tilt and swivel. Breaks down into a lot of parts.

nDAeGOr.jpg

All cleaned up with a petrol wash and wire brush before being dry assembled.

Masked off and painted in my current favourite colour.

Unusually, this one does tilt up to the full 90 degrees, incredibly, many don't.

Screwd.

NNJ: funny you should see my post and put the Star Wars twist to it. I'm planning on seeing the movie maybe later today.

EG: that's a great looking C1 and not a bad price either. did you see that he has a silver C1 in the background too? i wonder if he's a member?

Screwed: i just noticed your big drill press or mill vice and you are killing it with the cool old iron lately. Nicely done again

ALL: so speaking of great paint jobs and putting a theme to it i still like how Ritzblitz's sister painted his Reed 1C. i'll probably nominate it for paint job of the year, but there were a lot of great ones. there are starting to be several categories for Vise of 2015 in case some of you want to nominate yours or somebody else's in that thread.

Here's some more pics of the $20 Rock Island No. 597. I previously thought it was a 587 but the 9 looked like an 8. I'm planing to refurbish this one unless it finds a new home.

What kind of vise is the third one? The blue one at the left of the second picture?
After looking around here a bit I wonder if my no label vise is a Littlestown 112 "knock-off"?

I'll post pic in a minute evidently taptalk won't compress filesize?

Tedley-That little blue vise looks a lot like a Japanese hecsharp vise I have on one of my wood chippers. I've also heard they were cast in w.germany. Color definitely matches. Mine is out in the elements year round. Good little vise for my on the job, out in the elements light duty use .

Screwd,

What diameter is the lead screw on that thing? It looks massive, and appears to have a thrust bearing too!

I don't know how you snuck that one out from under joe and veeps, but that's suckage worthy if I ever saw it. Any rock island you're using a crane to lift is a keeper :eyecrazy:

Must be an inch at least. I may have to do a mug shot for scale. In one of those pictures you can see a 12 inch adjustable wrench. It does have a thrust bearing and I spent some time filing and grinding to make the jaw nice and smooth.

That came out awesome. What exact color is that?

Its an off the shelf exterior non drip gloss. I picked the exact colour after hours of searching. Originally bought it to do this:

RI5YA0E.jpg

Which I bought as a rusty pile of scrap. I much prefer the naked cast iron look but it's so impractical in use.

I finally acquired a 6" vise!

For your approval comes this Yost (unknown model). It looks similar to a 32c/33c - only bigger.

Here's the best part - it's been hiding in a storage room for years and only just last week was put to rest in our boneyard (I work for a steel mill). It was slated for scrap, which to be honest, makes no sense - this vise has some battle scars but no major structural issues and works perfectly!

How much do you ask? I still have to weigh it, but I have to pay the current scrap steel price of $.03/lb - which should add up to somewhere between $3.00 and $4.00. :rocker:

I could buy the table if I wanted, but I think I'll pass (weighs about 1/2 ton).

Riley: can you take more pictures of the table and i might trade you for something if you can drag it home. other than the gash in the removable jaw that vise looks to be in good shape. I don't need to tell you that you are getting a FAIR price so i'll let you live with only paying your boss that much for it. or just call it your Christmas bonus.

WELL DONE

Pete: that was quick so do you have a smoker or shop oven or is the paint still wet?

Screwed: love the sander and all your vises you've been posting. Just curious why you think it's not practical to use a vise or old tool that has BLO instead of paint on it?

Leg-no, now I'm not sure. I can't find where I saw how ps&w related to the shield on my vise. It def doesn't have the ps&w logo I researched. So I think I made an identifying mistake. Bad info.

Thanks for the info leg, I'll check it out.

Sorry outlaw, I got some bad info. My mistake on it.

Learning....

Thanks, lot of work went into that linisher. Painted parts are mostly steel and/or noticably repaired so I couldn't leave blank. I have used BLO on one of my Swindens but am unsure how that reacts if later painted. Are there any paints which react badly to BLO?

The linisher turned up as a pile of scrap (along with the mitre trimmer) and I had to fabricate a fair few parts for it, like the rollers! Just finishing off an early Dumore tool post grinder, then it's my long suffering Wilton! Woohoo!
