Perhaps it's the fact that you update too often with meaningless posts.

Update when you've made actual progress. Nobody else needs to know when you've had a day with little to no progress, or the weather is bad, or when you just didn't feel like doing anything, or that your took the trash to the curb for the week.

Wow!.... I, and I'm sure Bill as well, are soooooo enlightened by your helpful & constructive comment. Now please... :stfu:

I've always viewed those posts as a check-in. Bill knows that he has people on here watching, that in as much as a web forum can, hold him accountable.

He has drifted away and come back to this thread many times.

We're all entitled to our opinion. Is it ironic that you're not helping with comments like that either?

MadMechMaster - very good point. I hadn't considered that, but at the same time "checking in" could be as harmful as helpful as another form of enablement. Bill doesn't need more excuses vs actual change.

Like a bad car wreck, I can't look away.
843 posts in, and There is still a pile of "kitchen stuff" in the yard, under a tarp.
Bill and Julie are two people in a single family home.
Let's see, MY "kitchen stuff" consists of a microwave, a refrigerator, a stove, a Mr Coffee, an assortment of utensils, bowls, pots, pans and a couple of drawers that need to be sorted and cleaned out.
Bill, if the kitchen stuff is in the yard under a tarp, WHAT is in the kitchen???
Air compressors? Table saws? Old storm windows?
Aaaaaarrgggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Bronson,
A valid question.
There is a broken refrigerator, a set of kitchen cabinets waiting to be installed, some tools and some misc. Kitchen needs redoing, so no room for kitchen stuff yet. Every room in the house needs some repair or refinishing work, some more than others.

Starting to get some idea of the scope of the work here?

That's a part of the reason why it is taking so long.

Some guys think it isn't worth doing, and have said so. Even my wife would like to just leave. Not financially possible. Some have suggested selling everything and taking the money and leaving. That is an option I reject. Take away my tools and you may as well shoot me. There are a lot of different opinions on this group. They run the gamut. Many are radical. In the final analysis, I must choose my own path, my own methods, and my own lifestyle.

And for csp, The primary reason I post, is for my own benefit. It is a journal, a to do list, a daily accounting that helps me see the progress or lack thereof. Having you guys see it and comment is very secondary, but useful nonetheless.

My commentary was a possible explanation in response to this:

If you don't see the progress, then either you aren't looking carefully enough, or I'm not showing it well enough, or both.

JC23 is right, you seriously need professional help to get over the hump and there's nothing wrong with that. Seeking help would be an actual benefit and not a temporary warm fuzzy feeling you get from posting what shuffling of things you did from day to day.

With that said, it's pointless to try to get you to see that moving broken **** from one pile to another isn't progress, so I'm just going to bow out from this thread now.

JC23 summed up perfectly what I was struggling to put into words.
I've been reading these threads for what feels like forever now, partly to make myself feel better about my own lack of progress.
But constantly reading "sorting, organizing, moving stuff" just says your yard house and life are like the puzzle with 9 spaces and 8 tiles. 1 open space gets shifted around and it 'feels' like progress. But its not progress. I know this from my own fruitless efforts at organizing my garage, house and life.

Cheers

Those little puzzles you don't shift the empty space you put the other tiles in order utilising the single space just like Bill is doing.

I've actually popped out a few tiles and tossed them away. Now I have a number of open spaces and I'm organizing the remaining tiles. Once the tiles are in order I will go through the tiles again and see which ones I can do without. That's an apt description.

I think the thing that drives an observer, like some of you guys, crazy, is the shuffling and handling of everything numerous times. You would just go through everything and just toss anything that hadn't been used in a while. I cannot do that. I have to handle each item numerous times before I can emotionally let go, and dispose of it.

Bill....I think what aggravates people is that it is the same excuses every time, with no progress, then you call this a personal journal to help yourself help yourself, then you go and buy things that you already have 6 of anyways, then the cycle starts again. It's like the movie Groundhog Day. Just ask the members on here what they think your problem is, and don't get mad when they tell you like it is. Myself personally......I don't give a **** anymore. I'd just as soon see you post about what you bought or built, and let all of this other stuff go away. this thread along with the other thread has done nothing more than aggravate people, and you also, when you read replies you don't like. Have the mods delete the "Grunge Garage" thread, and this thread, and just start posting away like others do without all of the drama that this thread creates. But that's just what I see from my side of the fence. I can't speak for others, but I can observe what I see and comment on it. So buy away, and post away. Life's too short to keep rehashing the same thing over and over.

Bill,

My apologies. I'm the ******* that went off my rocker when you purchased your millionth (or was it billionth :dunno:) air compressor. It took me a while to come back and apologize, my delay was mostly due to the shame of my post, an experience others have shared when they too went off on you.

I'm the polar opposite of you, clutter drives me crazy, I can't tolerate it, so for peeps like me reading this thread it's only a matter of time before we go nuts  .

One comment that struck me from reading posts since I went postal is that you said your wife is not engaging in the professional help that you are. It would seem to be that regardless if you're able to conquer your hoarding demons, you're tilting against the wind if she doesn't join you in your effort ?

As others have suggested, stop all the moving/shuffling activities, fix the heat and water in the house, get your medical issues attended to, and try to get the wife to get to the same mental "place" that you're striving to get to. Otherwise it's an exercise in futility I think.

My $.02

Did you ever read that Sheldon quote Bill uses "I'm not crazy, my Mother had me tested" it gets a laugh in the show because clearly to some degree and compared to "normal" people he is. I guess Bill identifies with the sentiment he knows some of his behaviour is strange even crazy in the eyes of others he is most certainly not a some *******. He needs to work through stuff even if it takes years to do so. The guys that get aggravated mostly would love to turn up at Bills with multiple dumpsters and a skid steer and clear everything because they think he needs a clean slate, trouble is Bill would be having panic attacks just thinking about it and if it ever happened he might not survive the process.:dunno:

Hi Kevin, yeah I have and I understand how it all looks exactly the same to you but its not
the change may seem minute to you but its there! Look on the bright side at least he's not your neighbour!
Hey Bill how about setting a goal of having running water before Christmas (2015) just to show the naysayers you mean business?

Somehow I've missed this thread until now, but I'd definitely focus on the basics of a useful home before worrying about the junk in the sheds/yard/wherever. But, that's probably just an idea that's been floated about 3000 times...

I am going to throw something out here. I just put a self imposed 6 month moratorium on myself and did not post once. I found myself getting irritated that "my" GJ was posting idiotic threads, repeating things said a thousand times, and by gosh, people like Bill just could not see reason.

No one missed me. My 3000 posts were like dust in the wind (more like farts).

A funny thing happened. I still stopped by almost daily. I did not have to check in several times a day, as I was in no conversations, just reading threads that interested me and never opening any that might rile me up.

Nothing changed with my not posting, it is the same exact GJ as always. I do now know that Bill has the right to post on GJ the same as anyone and that hurling vitriol at him serves absolutely no purpose anymore. Post and let post. There is absolutely nothing that be said on this thread that will help, most will just hurt and force Bill into hiding.

Is that what you want? As stated, it is like a train wreck you cannot turn away from, but who's fault is that? Don't open the thread, or don't post in it.
It really is that simple.

Agreed, it's not like someone is going to post something that'll be a breakthrough for Bill. He's going to have to work through this his way.

I'll echo the sentiments of Kevin: I don't give a **** anymore.I was pulling for you for a long time, but I don't believe anything will fundamentally change here.
How many years have you been without heat and running water?
And the sentiments of JC23: Readers drop out because nothing really changes.
Good luck,Bill

After a few days of little of no progress, today I finally got the train moving again...a little.

Swept a small area along the wall in the basement, and part of the stairs. Inhaled a lungfull of nasty stuff.

Then brought down to the basement, all the dishes and kitchen stuff from the porch. Also brought in the small electric water heater. It needs to go down too.

Leaving the kitchen stuff in the powder room for the moment, I am now free to start taking stuff and junk out of the basement again, and freeing up more space.

Have been playing the piano while Julie makes jewelry gifts for Christmas.

Freezing weather outside but should be warmer during the week. Then I will rake up the last of the leaves.

May go back down in a bit and start taking stuff out of the basement. That will give me more space.

And another session down there.

Didn't bring anything else up and out, but tore into the front of the basement and shoveled up a trash can full and started in the far back corner, pulling out boxes of ruined stuff and just empty boxes, wet from the flood and now dried out.

Pulled another empty dumpster around to the porch. It will fill quickly in the morning when it's light out.

Enough for tonight?

Maybe...

One last session.

Tossed a bunch of cardboard boxes and some ruined sleeping bags into the yard and filled another dumpster.

That's it for the evening.

Tomorrow should be interesting, because the basement seems doable.

Keep on a roll !!!

What do you need to do to get the plumbing resolved? how big of a project is it?

Can you just shove **** / stuff out of the way to get to the plumbing issue(s)?

I already have access.

There is a Tee with a 3/4" plug I will remove.

I need a 3/4" ball valve.

Will pick one up at HD tomorrow evening.

Just fixed a China pipe wrench that had a spring mashed sideways in it, causing it to stick and not adjust.

Have a 3/4 to 3/4 Pex Sharkbite adapter and some 3/4 Pex and some pipe dope. Also a street key to turn the water on.

Sounds like a fix is in the works.

Then time to hook up the EWH.

Is not the heat just gonna go thru the holes in the roof.

Pretty funny!:bounce:

Only one hole in the roof, and it's a hatch I installed for easy access, since I'm scared of heights.

And I have 18" of FG insulation in the attic. Very cozy.

Progress today:

Been working down in the basement, off and on, all day.

Thought I had 7 of those 96 gallon curbside trash cans full, but.....

Ooooops........I miscounted. There are now 9 full cans ready to put out tomorrow evening.

I'm going to have to look around to find and empty any more.

And I still have all day tomorrow to fill more of them up!

Should have worn a mask, as I'm coughing and runny nose. Well, we've already established what an idiot I am.

Not quite half the basement cleared, but a strong 1/3, at least.
