Thanks 454
I thought of that. I checked for straightness with carpentry tools ( the ruler on a combination square.) Seemed straight. But I should find a machinist grade straight edge to double check. My combination square ruler can't be too bad...I checked it against a granite countertop.(again I realize a kitchen counter is not an absolute granite surface plate.)

Sadly i'm heading out the door for a 6 hour drive to deliver a nice piece of gym equipment and not a vise to be found anywhere worth stopping for. must be you guys and your nationwide searches or maybe because Riley has bought everything in 2 states around here lately.
Thoroughly clean the sliding parts and coat them with marking blue or use a felt pen/sharpie. Any raised areas will show up easily. I assume you have tested the thread to make sure that's not the problem.
Looks like you have a really nice little used vice there and it would be a shame to mess it up. As a final resort, if it's just a slight manufacturing issue, you could use some fine abrasive paste to lap the moving jaw to the body.

Must be drill press vise time, just got back with this compound angle vise. Looks like there was a tag riveted/drive screwed on to it at one time. Has a hammered green finish, reminds me of an SK box. Looks to be very well made, anybody ID it? Probably import?

If only I could take credit! There's a drought out there and I've resorted to looking on eBay. Tis truly sad.
Safe journeys!

Wait a minute...
Craptain picked up a 9 drawer Craftsman rollaway AND a nice vise for only SIX BUCKS?
The relatively clean MDF bench top alone is worth $6
Not a rollaway. Just the cheapo bench. And the top is water damaged. Still very very happy. Now I am thinking rollaway conversion. HmmmWait a minute...

ALL: i'm going to try to get a few family photos of my vises before i end up selling them to other members and clients and friends. i'm not sure i want to put them all in one place though because my wife might stop by because she only has seen a few in one place so far.![]()
There is a drought out there because you have fished out this hole! I live only a few miles away, and the suction from you is making my tools bunch up on the side of the shop closest to your house.![]()

If you're going to restore 1 vise, might as well restore 4 right? Reed 405-1/2, Wilton C1 and Wilton 4" Bullet, Snap-On / Wilton 1760. I sold the 1760 already. I was really happy with the way it turned out. The other 3 are almost done - I'm in the spray booth, watching paint dry, as I type.
