Craptain: That's much the same way I think about these small vises especially the affordable part. They do seem to be a slice of history too. While you're looking for a Red Arrow keep your eyes peeled for one of these Little Giants.

I have a palmgren swivel base with a center vise mounting hole that could really use a DP vise. I cant seem to run across one. The one I've seen on here like this, maybe yours, was an adjustable angle piece.

Are you talking about a setup like this. I have to clean mine up.

VA, your so right about the "tools with History"... I have just a few of my dads, none from my grandfather. My dad's vise was broken and is long gone (unless remnants are in a corner of my mom's place...) and I have his little pipe vise, and my daughter now has his little 1 lb made in Japan "Anvil" for her jewelry work... (And yes, she does appreciate its history..)

Other than that, a few hand tools scattered in my collection. I managed to find a few more tools of his in his sheds last year after he passed, but the rest was mostly junk he'd picked up here and there long after he moved to Idaho.

VA: nice story and sorry to hear your Dad passed last year. BTW did your Dad have any opinion of the chain gang or did he ever see it?

Top: maybe that is the reason Shift's Wilton is having issues. thanks for the post. i've got several old bullets on my list to spiff up and i haven't had them apart in a few years and one or two of them hasn't been apart in over 20 or 30 years because they were part of a multy vise purchase where i didn't check them.

ALL: anybody have a goal on how many vises (vices) they are planning on buying or selling next year? i'm thinking i'm going to get my family down to maybe the top 30 or less and having most if not all usable. might be hard to do because i still have a few dozen on my list of vises i'd like to own. :willy_nil

Yea Drive, he saw the big ones in the pile.---I showed them to him after he saw my 608 Columbian on the bench and said ("what in the world do you need any such a vise as that for").---Right funny seeing his expression when I raised the tarp and said ("same reason I need these").---Like Grandad, my Dad came through the depression also, and he didn't believe in any unnecessary spending either.---He didn't outright say anything, but I knew what he was thinking.:shocking:

I thought of that. I checked for straightness with carpentry tools ( the ruler on a combination square.) Seemed straight. But I should find a machinist grade straight edge to double check. My combination square ruler can't be too bad...I checked it against a granite countertop.(again I realize a kitchen counter is not an absolute granite surface plate.)

Thoroughly clean the sliding parts and coat them with marking blue or use a felt pen/sharpie. Any raised areas will show up easily. I assume you have tested the thread to make sure that's not the problem.

Looks like you have a really nice little used vice there and it would be a shame to mess it up. As a final resort, if it's just a slight manufacturing issue, you could use some fine abrasive paste to lap the moving jaw to the body.

VA: i'm sure my Dad would say the same thing if he saw just some of my stuff too. mine is still around but fading fast now at 83 and if Mom slows down at all he's not long for being around. maybe i'll give him a tour before too long if i ever get ORGANIZED. i'm sure he'd be shaking his head too because he told me when i was growing up that if i couldn't pay cash for it i didn't need it, but my first house cost $65,000 and his cost $11,000 20 years earlier. i passed on a few that i saw that were 10,000-15,000 because i only had 8,000 in my pocket, but found out you could get a mortgage so didn't quite pay cash for the first house.

ALL: i'm going to try to get a few family photos of my vises before i end up selling them to other members and clients and friends. i'm not sure i want to put them all in one place though because my wife might stop by because she only has seen a few in one place so far.

Sadly i'm heading out the door for a 6 hour drive to deliver a nice piece of gym equipment and not a vise to be found anywhere worth stopping for. must be you guys and your nationwide searches or maybe because Riley has bought everything in 2 states around here lately.

drives and va: Not only do I still have my grandfather’s Columbian D43 ½ it is my primary vise. Obviously I don’t do much heavy machine work but for day to day stuff it suits my needs perfectly. I also have many of his hand tools which I used until recently. I now have them put away in a separate box of their own. I have told my son that they are to be his. I don’t know what my grandfather would have thought about accumulating as many vises as I have but, from the family stories I have heard, his father would have been apoplectic.

If only I could take credit! There's a drought out there and I've resorted to looking on eBay. Tis truly sad.

Safe journeys!

Thanks Screwdriver

You, Outlaw and Bagged all suggested magic marker pen ink as a tell tale for binding points. I will definately do that first.
I will add your idea of lapping abrasive to my arsenal of tools. I will prevail! ;)

BTW, I already took out the main screw and nut to eliminate those variables. I'm just sliding two heavy parts in and out with arm power. No key in the slide either.

Must be drill press vise time, just got back with this compound angle vise. Looks like there was a tag riveted/drive screwed on to it at one time. Has a hammered green finish, reminds me of an SK box. Looks to be very well made, anybody ID it? Probably import?

Probably an Asian copy of a Universal vise and tool company vise. Some of the casting features are too square compared to an original.

Scooter you want this style of vise, only in the 2-1/2" wide version:

And this is why: The angle base has this recess for the pivot shoulder the std type vise does not.

A Stanley angle vise may have the same pocket as well (or Craftsman...) but measure for Dia and depth first...

There is a drought out there because you have fished out this hole! I live only a few miles away, and the suction from you is making my tools bunch up on the side of the shop closest to your house. ;)

OUTLAW Thank you very much. Pretty sure I had seen one before on here searching the archives, I think it was a craftsman that came with a barn find 150 DP.

I figured that shoulder was important. The pics are very helpful as now know exactly what to look for. The swivel base was a cool find and I'd hate to let it go.

Wait a minute...
Craptain picked up a 9 drawer Craftsman cabinet AND a nice vise for only SIX BUCKS?
The relatively clean MDF bench top alone is worth $6

No; that is the work bench base. No wheels. Not sure of the slides on the drawers, some of those were just drawers and not tool box slides...

Still nicer than most home brew work bench bases...

Not a rollaway. Just the cheapo bench. And the top is water damaged. Still very very happy. Now I am thinking rollaway conversion. Hmmm

Thank you drivesitfar for appreciating my work :)
My uncle is a professional machinist. I asked him for help and he cut and hardened this jaws for me. I think he used some kind of press to cut this square shape pattern. He has access to many industrial machines.

I think that American replacement vise jaws are quite expensive in comparison to Polish one, for instance 250mm (approximately 10 inch) jaws from Bison cost 50USD

Picked up a Wilton C3 yesterday. It's sitting next to my little 3" Parker and my Reed C2. Guy works for the state of Montana and is moving. Didn't want to take it along.

I'm selling these 2 drill press vises for a good price for anyone on GJ.
Send me a PM and make me a reasonable offer.

This one is a cheap import tilting vise.

Hey man, poked my head in for the first time in a few months and started checking out the ol' vise thread and seen this. Why you selling all your stuff? Hope everything is going good for you.

Prov: that was a good one and probably so so true.

Filson: i guess you didn't see the post where i said i might own 150 vises? or that i'm trying to get DOWN to maybe 20-30? funny thing i sell one or two and end up buying 3 or 4. :dunno:

how do i turn this around?

Also glad to have you back for a visit or are you going to post a few finds you had while you've been moving in to that great shop? did you ever get that Reed 208 mounted and please post pictures.

ALL: i started a thread in Free Parking and only did a couple of my new years resolutions there. here's the link http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=315276

i truly would like to get to 20 or 30 or maybe 40 vises by the end of the year so it's not a fire sale, but i do have a few old gems to find homes for this year. of course i also have a few to buy so up for trades too.

Drive, in one paragraph you propose a commendable resolution, and in the next you're sad because there're no possible acquisitions along your road-trip.---That and the admission of sell 2 and buy 4.---I don't think you can get there from here.

Have you ever heard the expression, "East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet".---I'm afraid this is you're lot in life my friend.---By this time next year, you will have trimmed your 150 vises down to 210.

VA: I've smiled at more than a few posts made here on GJ, but rarely laugh out loud. You sir are a gentleman and a scholar and a damn funny guy. Oh and even if dad shook his head over your chain gang we might to but only in amazement and jealously.

Hope you dont ever get flooded enough where you have to move them quickly or as some would say just tie them all to a chain connected to you house and shop and they'll never move and might even save your house.

Happy new year to you and your family and hope 2016 brings you a few more vises on your list.

Get: So you post on the new years thread I need to get off Craigslist and quit drinking IPA's. You might as well tell me to quit getting lucky with my wife and put me in an urn because I'm already talking about selling some vises even though it seems to be not quite working. Happy new years to you and your family and speakin of family how about a family photo?

All: Not all my vise are for sale bur if you give me a pm or email with a trade or offer you just might get one or several.

Cheers

If you're going to restore 1 vise, might as well restore 4 right? Reed 205-1/2, Wilton C1 and Wilton 4" Bullet, Snap-On / Wilton 1760. I sold the 1760 already. I was really happy with the way it turned out. The other 3 are almost done - I'm in the spray booth, watching paint dry, as I type.

Climb: So do you have 4 more in line for the next batch since your assembly line seems to be working nicely. Post more pics as you can and I bet some soul like to see your paint booth too or at least I wound on the 101 thread.

Climb: i couldn't see you were actually showing your "paint booth" on your posts. good luck with finishing them up and putting them to work or finding new homes for them.

DK: the cast iron stand looks like a Baldor grinder stand, but i could be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time.

cheers all
