Hi all,
Long time no nothin' - I used to hang out here a lot as I was "between jobs" as they say and had time to work on filling out my tool collection. Was also filling in at my friend's shop when he was between mechanics; I hope I did a reasonably good impersonation of a professional. I've been gone for about a year now as I took a job that has nothing to do with working with my hands and have been busy as heck, hope you all will forgive me (if you even noticed...)
Anyway, today I started kind of a sad job. A friend from college's father used to be a professional mechanic; he and his wife are both getting to the point where they're talking about selling their house and moving into a retirement community. I went over there today to look at his tool collection; I bought some stuff off of him that I didn't have and also took a few things with me to sell on consignment to help them out.
One thing that I left behind obviously was his box itself. It is a MAC MB 9100/9200 combo. Also has both left and right side cabinets with drawers, those were detached and up against a wall so I couldn't get the numbers off of those. Everything is obviously filthy, a little stuck, and in need of some love but it's all there and the only paint obviously needed is on one of the side cabinets; the rest I think would look just fine after a kerosene bath.
Problem I'm having is I'm not having any luck finding any completed sale records for these toolboxes. I'd like to make him an offer on it because I'd really like to upgrade my stuff, but at the same time while I'm a cheap ******* and will obviously lowball him (and he knows it and I think is cool with it) I want to keep it in the realm of reasonability and couldn't sleep at night if I didn't get within 80% or so of what he could get if he just threw it on Craigslist or whatever.
So what say you all? What do you think is a reasonable, fair price for this combo? I had put no thought into this at all prior to today as my memory was that the box was much larger than it is, but when I saw it was really a 32" box with detachable side cabinets I suddenly became interested. All advice is greatly appreciated.
