Hi all,

Long time no nothin' - I used to hang out here a lot as I was "between jobs" as they say and had time to work on filling out my tool collection. Was also filling in at my friend's shop when he was between mechanics; I hope I did a reasonably good impersonation of a professional. I've been gone for about a year now as I took a job that has nothing to do with working with my hands and have been busy as heck, hope you all will forgive me (if you even noticed...)

Anyway, today I started kind of a sad job. A friend from college's father used to be a professional mechanic; he and his wife are both getting to the point where they're talking about selling their house and moving into a retirement community. I went over there today to look at his tool collection; I bought some stuff off of him that I didn't have and also took a few things with me to sell on consignment to help them out.

One thing that I left behind obviously was his box itself. It is a MAC MB 9100/9200 combo. Also has both left and right side cabinets with drawers, those were detached and up against a wall so I couldn't get the numbers off of those. Everything is obviously filthy, a little stuck, and in need of some love but it's all there and the only paint obviously needed is on one of the side cabinets; the rest I think would look just fine after a kerosene bath.

Problem I'm having is I'm not having any luck finding any completed sale records for these toolboxes. I'd like to make him an offer on it because I'd really like to upgrade my stuff, but at the same time while I'm a cheap ******* and will obviously lowball him (and he knows it and I think is cool with it) I want to keep it in the realm of reasonability and couldn't sleep at night if I didn't get within 80% or so of what he could get if he just threw it on Craigslist or whatever.

So what say you all? What do you think is a reasonable, fair price for this combo? I had put no thought into this at all prior to today as my memory was that the box was much larger than it is, but when I saw it was really a 32" box with detachable side cabinets I suddenly became interested. All advice is greatly appreciated.

I think those are all friction slide boxes, seems like there was some threads talking about those boxes before you might want to try an search for those. I would think $600 or so would be the high price on them depending on condition and 3-400 would be a pretty good deal jmo. Good luck...

I did but didn't come up with anything... Yes all drawers are friction. That low? Good for me I guess but am trying to be fair to all. I'll search again I was in my phone before

Yeah you might get a little more out of it since it has both side boxes but it would sit on CL or Ebay for a while. Also if they was excellent condition might up it some. I could be way off, i dont think, but maybe someone else will chime in.

A fair price would be what ever you two decide to be fair, That could be 100 cause he wants to be generous or it could be 1000 because you do. You can look on CL, here, maybe ebay, or MAC and get a general idea on what it might be worth, but it still boils down to what youre both comfortable with.

Depends on condition, keeping in mind that friction slide boxes are becoming less and less appealing to many, especially with drawer dividers and only 33x18". Parts are very difficult to come by for those. ~$300-650 depending on condition and local competition.

Everything is obviously filthy, a little stuck, and in need of some love but it's all there and the only paint obviously needed is on one of the side cabinets; the rest I think would look just fine after a kerosene bath.

Red flag to me. They sound rough.

Great friend.

I think it's a really nice box and the dirtiness doesn't bother me much because if I got anything used I'd clean the hell out of it anyway. I guess I was mentally ball parking it at $1K or thereabouts which would be a stretch for me but it sounds like I could offer less with a clear conscience?

I would think much less then 1k, but ask him what he wants for it just to see what he thinks its worth.

I paid 600 dollars for a mac mb 9100 and 9200 box combo. The friction slides are ok as long as you grease them. And the boxes are very sturdy. And they are vintage boxes thats cool
