OIL Filter Wrench, looking for a veritical one, not horizontal

I have a Toyota Tacoma 2004 and I am sick and tired of trying to put a long rigid horizontal tool on a part in an area that is a vertical area to get to, basically, if you get my drift.

Where can I buy a oil wrench that is shaped like a Y, so to speak, and goes up and around the bottom of the oil filter and then tights and you can spin off the filter.

Trying to make my life easier, any suggestions, brand names, thanks in advance.

What about one of the cup filter wrenches? Put a long extension in and drop straight down.

Might be called oil filter socket or oil filter wrench. Not sure on the correct name but looks like this:

They work really well on certain vehicles but are a pain in the *** to get off the filter in my opinion.

I don't know what size the filter is on your 04 but they should make the socket for that filter size. Hopefully this helps. Good luck.

You could also try an oil filter strap wrench. The cap wrench would be easier.

I know it is sort of expensive but get the Assenmacher one, as far as I know on the bigger Toyota filters (90915-yzzd1 2 3) it is sort of unique in size and flutes and only the assenmacher tool fits.

I have also used this kind of filter attachment on this Toyota filter, if this above picture is like your truck it should work, but not as nice as the correct cap. Previously burning my hands trying to slip this little guy down to the block of the 2JZ engine

i'm assuming you mean the filter is vertical... multiple options exist... if you see yourself always using the same brand of filter on the truck a cap style wrench with an extension will be the best... find a cap that fits your filter really well and stick with it

otherwise you can try one of the clamping style filter wrenches that use either the claw style with the 3 arms or the one someone else linked

Im not familiar with tacoma's oil filter location, but I usually use a large pair of channel locks. Just open it up and grab tight on the filter and slowly twist.

there is also the regular metal strap type except in place of the handle there is a female 3/8 or 1/2" spot for an extention/ratchet. used to use those all the time on small blocks where the exhaust was close to the filter. still available at the parts stores AFAIK. cup wrenches we used to beat on and off with the ratchet else they slip with any oil on them...

I have a Hazet one that looks just like this for my Porsche 993 second filter, which I assure you is about as difficult a filter location as you will find.

For my Scion FRS, which may us the same filter flutes and diameter as yours, I have not found a socket type one yet. I have a small set (9") of Channellock oil filter pliers I use for removal of it.

Also have one of the ones pictured by anndel, mine is branded Craftsman and I think they are all the same. That will remove anything, though it's finicky to use and may damage the filter.

The second one pictured by PoorOwner is one I always thought was a good design and wanted to try. I think Lisle makes them.

I have a metal cap for my F150 but have used a plastic one (don't remember the brand) for my Tahoe for 10 years with no issues. Just make sure it has a metal insert where the drive tool attaches.

I have a surprising number of oil filter removal tools, despite now having only vehicles with cartridge filters.

The rotating clamp type pictured above will remove almost any filter, but they have a drawback: they will release the filter as soon as you release the torque. I usually only pull one out for a stubborn filter.

The cap style is most convenient. If the cap fits correctly you can remove filters buried sideways under hot manifolds without getting oily or burnt. You do need one that matches the number of flutes/facets/flats on the filter. Some caps nominally handle two different facet counts, but they don't work as well as a cap that handles e.g. only 14 flats.

I have the Craftsman 3 finger oil filter wrench and there is a lot of play. It will also slip off my extensions. I would buy the Lisle oil filter wrench instead of the 3 finger oil filter wrenchs.

+1 I have the Craftsman 3 finger and love it. works for everything. Its almost too big for my Subaru filter(has a really small filter) but goes very large as well. It does take some getting used to but overall it's well worth it.

I've changed the cartridge filter on a 2.0 d4d diesel Toyota and had to buy a end cap type wrench. Nothing else, including the three legged type would fit because the filter sits up inside a housing with no room for anything to grip the filter sides. Similar is a BMW motorcycle I used to own.
Whole sets of cap wrenches in different sizes are available and probably a good investment for the future. Don't know if the sets are available in good brand names, but the cheap ones I've used seem OK.

I have the Craftsman version of this. I absolutely hate using it, but I've ended up using it quite a bit. The filter cap types are way better. If I were a mechanic or a lube tech I would just buy a whole set of those.

yes once you make a wrong turn or lose tension with the ratchet it opns up. normally i just use it to break ut koose then use my hands to remove the filter.

At the shop I work at I bent a piece of welding rod around the neck of a water bottle and cut and bent a hook that will let it hang from the radiator support. When changing the oil on those I slip the bottle over the drain ****** and hook it. I can then change the filter, brake clean the filter drain then empty the bottle for the next go round. We have several customers with these trucks.

This might be a good alternative - if you just start buying K&N oil filters, there is a 1" nut welded onto the bottom of the oil filter's case.. This way all you need is a 6 point socket.. Been using them for years, in part for that reason..

I used to aim for finger tight. That way A slight grunt would remove them at the next oil change.

But,

I did this with my new vehicle with an extended drain filter and the can was coated with oil a while later. The filters usually state 3/4-1 full turn and I did about a half. So, either I am getting weaker, but a full turn would take a tool for me to apply, but I can strong arm three quarters of a turn. And, of course, a filter tool will be required for removal since either the heat or oil swells the gasket and makes it alot tighter, at least that is probably the reason they are tighter upon removal than at installation.
