Drives, Parker made vises for well lover 100 years and I don't think anyone has a list of all the different models they made over time. I've got quite a few of the catalog pages, and I'm no where near having a complete idea.

The date you remember is probably the 1867, date. That has nothing to do with the 1876 incorporation date for the Charles Parker Co. It existed as a company much earlier, and used the Parker name, but was not incorporated. The oldest one I know of is June 20th 1854, and that was for the steel reinforcement bars in the slide. The green painted "economy" vises lacked this feature..

Mr P thats u **** proce for sure. I've had three of those, all very nice and I sold all three for well over $200 each. A buddy told me that he restored the swivel body by cleaning it thoroughly and then putting valve lapping compound inside. Rotate it until it smooooths out then clean it well and grease it up.

Here is a 4.5" Wilton I just finished. '12/31/60 guarantee expiration date' on the slide. Kevin Scott jaws, I made new swivel clamp handles. Vise originally had a blue stone finish on it. Tough as freaking nails. ***** to remove. 62.1 lbs

Is the 439 older? I notice the lack of a spanner requirement

Good eye Cwazy, yes I've had two of these 939s. They have all come out of the Northwestern part of Connecticut. I've missed about 4 others. The built in spanners came around 1925 or so I think, maybe 1930. I have a pic somewhere of my 939 restored but I cannot find it in my hard drive.

What do you recommend to protect vise after a electrolysis bath and before paint work ?

Veeps and I have had a lot of luck with just Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO). Problem is I have to bake it at 300-350 degrees for about 6 hours and it smells BAD. But it covers bare metal great and is easy to paint over. Here is a little Parker I used BLO on.

Here is the C0, finally done. There's no beauty pageants in this vise's future, but it'll be a fine working tool. The best looking part is probably the jaws from Kevin. :p

Uncle Charlie - Maybe no beauty pageants, but that Wilton looks good to me. Nice job!

Exactly what it is. It looks like the piece the should extend to the floor (and transmit any pounding to the floor) has been broken off.

Dave: the little vise is a Prentiss and it's maybe 90 years old. being that small many uses for it or it might just be a colletable to the buyer, but they all sell for about that much.

Yes it's a blacksmith vise in the last picture you posted. pass on the import with the busted jaw even for $10, buy the old #4 Canadian for $20 and pass on the welded up one for $125.

anything else?

Wrench: nice to see you posting again. if you can't find anybody to trade you for the double swiveler for a smaller one is there any of my vises that might make you smile for a trade?

Joe: are you baking the BLO in the little smoker you bought? how bad can that smell be because the results are over the top? BTW is the BLO sticky at all after baking or almost like a powder coated paint job?

The BLO is baked in my electric smoker. Don't do it in a house oven, you'll be divorced no ****! Smell is very, very bad. It isn't sticky as far as I've seen. Thats why I bake it so long. The jury is still out long term but i think it will all be OK. Here is a Reed I BLO'd and painted. The slide is raw blo. No rust at all and it has been 4 months

I've had luck baking BLO at lower temps as well, or just letting them cure on them own. It sticks perfectly, not sticky, and you get the great protection of BLO. You just don't get that same golden color.

BB: i'm not sure if you are asking a question or just showing us what you can buy? the older Record vices with the quick releases and even the 20 year old ones with quick releases are on my radar and one day i'll own another one.

Joe: i'm guessing that cooking/baking the BLO STINKS? the brown color looks great so i might get one of those smokers and just leave the shop's door open if and when i try that.

Bagged: i think you baked a Parker with BLO and it came out more black. interesting.

My main question is are those good vises/prices? I think I have read the Record are not all the same quality?

BB: Record is a quality name and more so with the older ones that say Made In England on their sides. some of the newer ones just say Shefield, England which were made in China and ASSEMBLED in England or sold from there.

anyway i like the style of the 6 inch one and the price is ok. if you can find them cheaper then buy that one which doesn't seem like a bad price at $95.
