Welcome to the "Swedish workshop in a old brewery"-thread
Been looking around here for about a year now & i've gotten many gr8 ideas from you guys during the time.

:bubbrubb:

My name is Joachim, 26 years old and live with my girlfriend in southern Sweden.

We both work at the same business, an american owned pump industry with around 1200 employees here in the factoty, loys and lots more world wide. Well payed by working class standards here in Sweden.

Between 2009-2015 I rebuilt and renovated my first home, wich I sold in june 2015 because my girl and I had been looking for something bigger and we also wanted a big garage/work shop.

We found, bought and got acces to our new property 1 july 2015. In 1900-1970 the first owners had a brewery at the property, before they moved they tore down most part of the brewery, but they kept the building that now is our garage. We spent the first 3 weeks by clearing all the **** at the property (P-O liked to hoard everything he got over) we also had to put down like a week for gardening stuff as lawnmowing, cutting trees, bushes etc just to be able to move in our own stuff.

When it was all cleared out we began to tore down and redo the electricity, inner roofing, walls, floors and trim inside the house. Even changed all the old lousy windows to new white PVC windows. Within a few mounths we finished (my last house took me 5-6 years to finish, and the new is twice as big, Iguess a nagging girlfriend helps sometimes :D ) and I was able to start putting in more hours making the garage more user friendly :)

We also have 3 more rooms (bed rooms), bathroom and a WC, but got no pics on them.

Both me and the gf (whos name is Ida btw) likes to work on cars and everything in between. I own a Volvo 940 -95 wich I have rebuilt to be a pretty neat daily drifter, and Ida is more of a cleaning/washing/styling-girl :)

The Volvo 940
274686-3548037.jpg

I've had several different cars since I got a drivng license in 2008, Bmw, Mercedes, Vw, Jeep, but closest to the heart is still old volvo cars. I think i might've had somewhere around 40-45 vehicles, maybe 35 of them volvos. My dream car is probably a 60's old pickup truck that I'm gonna install a newer diesel engine and drivetrain.

Volvo 745 burn edition ;)

BMW 740 ia E38, was very hard not to do this every time i drove

Mercedes E-class diesel wagon with coils and bigger wheels

261683-2735134.jpg

Volvo 740 daily cruiser

372169-3583358.jpg

Volvo V70 daily driver

etc etc...

My current daily is a Volkswagen Passat wagon -02

Many words, phew.. :p

I will be uploading some before/after pics of my first house, some of the old and current cars, our new house, the garage etc as soon as I sorted out all the pics.

Cheers!

Working well! Nice house and you did it really quick! I like the fact you left the old woodfloor in the living room. We also had that in the previous house. We wanted to change the colour a bit, so we had a company polish, stain and put new lacquer on it. As it was the first time it was done, it was thick enough for the operation.

Also, do like the cars. Waiting for photos of the shop. If it's going to be as nice as your house, I'm expecting something really great ;)

Thanks, yeah I like the oak floor, but underneeth its an even older wooden floor, so next time we are redoing we'll probably rip everything out :p

Omg I really hated the p-o right now :p

But got everything cleared out, and tore down the old pipes and ****. A friend of mine who works with bricks and plaster helped me with patching up some holes and bricked and mudded a crappy door opening that we had no use of.

I then started painting the walls in the two smaller rooms, put up some old tin roof we got for free, painted the floor with a grey 2k wery nice paint.

My planned future investments are following:
- A big lathe who would allow me to restore up to 20” rims
- Blasting cabinet
- Tyre changer and wheel balancer
- Bigger air compressor

Im also planning on installing a lift, right “over” the oil pit, wich would give me the opportunity to use both the depth of the pit and the hight of the lift.
The shop has 3.2 meters of head room, so theres not much room for a big high lifting lift :p

Well that was quick, nice going on the remodel.

I like your car history. And I must have a very lazy 740 because it won't do burnouts.

You may want to consider a vertical lathe for such a big swing (20"). Not as common as a horizontal engine lathe but much easier to turn large items. The lower popularity may also net you a lower price for one.

As others mentioned, huge amount of progress in a short time.

Thanks Jim! Yeah it went pretty fast this time, I dont like resting after work :p I'll probably put up some similar tool board in the big area as well.

Then i have the very pleasant problem, I'll have to buy more tools :D

Great job on the shop and cars. Like the license plate trim & the metal wainscoting. Planning on using that in my new shop also. Mike

Yeah the tin came out pretty nice, we got it for free so why not use it rather then just leave it out on the yard with a tarpaulin over it :p

great job.
love seeing pictures from other places in the world!

Thanks for sharing

:rocker:

Very cool. The garage has great character. oh yeah, the house looks good too.

Hehe thanks, I love our house, but we had never bought it if it didnt come with the garage :)

WAT? I've probably had like ten 740/940 and been doing burnouts with all of them.. It takes a while, but once the wheels have started to spin, you can keep on for an entire day haha.. perfect with absolutely no horse powers ;)

Thank you very much, Herb :)

did you get your cabinets and furniture at IKEA? j/k lol

Thx for the tip, but its rather hard to find a vertical lathe for good money here in Swe.. But its not that hard finding a big old lathe that would alow 20" rims, for somewhere around 1-3000$

Property, home and garage have come around very nicely. Great work, love the Volvo!

Thank you very much :)

Didnt do much in the shop this past weekend due to the cold weather. We have a "air source heat pump" in the shop, but it doesnt work so well when its past -19*C, so we had like +5*C inside.

We went and bought a new car for Ida, a red Volvo 945 Turbo wagon. So she cleaned it up a little bit and I helped her with small things like changing some lights, engine service etc etc..

Things like christmas bonuses doesnt exist here in Swe, yeah, I know, stupid country :p So right now Im just waiting for the next payment so I can buy material so I can put up all my light fixtures and run the electrics.

I've also put my VW Passat up for sale, if it gets sold Im gonna buy a old Volvo 245 wagon and use it as a daily. Will build a new engine (Volvo 5 cyl diesel engine with automatic gearbox) by the side and when I've gathered all parts gonna install it.

Cya :)

Looks like you are both a very skilled and very energetic young man. Your old brew house seems to be a perfectly designed garage and workspace as well. Looking forward to seeing more pictures as you progress.

It's all looking great! What have you got planned for a heating system? It looked like there may have been a steam system at one time. The old steam pipes made me wonder if you have to worry about asbestos disposal where you are. I'm lucky to live somewhere here that doesn't need to worry about building permits, but it seems to be one of the most popular topics on GJ. Just curious if you deal with some of those same issues there.

This will be a great thread to follow.

Hi!

For a long time ago the building had water, and a oil burning water heater, but it froze due to unheated during a winter I guess, we will remove the old chimney when we are redoing the roof in 1-2 years.

For now we are using a air heater that runs on electricity, but I bought it for my last garage (1/3 of the size of this building), so its rather ineffective now, but it keeps the shop above freezing at least :)

what's the other building between the house and the garage?

jim

Its a decent size double, but with only one car opening, planning om redoing that wall so we can put in a wider opening so we can park two cars in there.

Wow, this shop is going to be awesome. love the lower tin walls :)

Thank you, yeah the tin came out pretty well :)

Yesterday I picked up a new engine for my future Volvo 245, its a 5 cyl turbo engine. $50 with a gearbox, cheap as hell, and today I sold the gearbox for $30, so Im only in for $20 so far :)

Need new oilpan, manifold, turbo, plenium etc etc so its a good start economically :)

Now its beertime!

Seems like you got some cool toys to play with :)

Thanks for stepping by my garage.

This one seems interesting also.
Good job so far.
