The Framers were in a reduced staffing situation today ...just two guys.

20160125-31.jpg 20160125-32.jpg 20160125-33.jpg

A considerable amount of time was spent getting the doors installed. This became a priority when the masons arrived.

20160125-34.jpg

They started setting up the framing for the high ceiling joists in the Wood Shop.

20160125-35.jpg

They started attaching some trim pieces on the garage doors.

A lot of activity and all in all a great day!

Unfortunately rain is forecast for tomorrow evening and all day Wednesday. I was hoping we would get the roof shingles on before we got more rain.

I think the roofers are scheduled to start working on the fascia tomorrow. That should be fun with the masons trying to work underneath them.

Macguykc,

Thanks for the very kind words about my build and my attempts to document same.

I realize that I am very fortunate to be able to build this. I am looking forward to using it soon for its intended purpose. Hopefully in a couple of months I'll be moving tools and such into the building.

Best regards,

Scott

Tuesday - January 26, 2016

This morning I got out onto the building site before any workers had arrived.

20160126-01.jpg

Stepped back away from the building and took a shot just to document where we are starting today.

20160126-02.jpg 20160126-03.jpg

Just a shot of the rough plumbing that was installed yesterday.

20160126-04.jpg

This gave me pause... That looks like ****.
Turns out the Framers put that brick up like that just to get an idea of where to locate some trim pieces that goes above the brick. I was afraid this was what the brick sill was going to look like!

20160126-05.jpg

About that time all the workers started arriving.

Rough pluming continued...

20160126-11.jpg

The shower stall was delivered and positioned in the bathroom.

20160126-12.jpg 20160126-13.jpg 20160126-14.jpg

A hose bib was installed near where the shop sink will be located and some tubing was installed to go to the toilet.

20160126-15.jpg

The Mezzanine got some rough plumbing love as well.

The Framers were involved with many aspects of the build today.

20160126-21.jpg 20160126-22.jpg 20160126-23.jpg

Installing the high ceiling joists in the Woodshop.

20160126-24.jpg

Attaching trim above where the wainscoting brick sill will be located.

20160126-25.jpg 20160126-26.jpg

Attaching blocking between the trusses for the Electrician to attach the light fixtures securely.

20160126-27.jpg

Racing against the approaching rain to get the roofing felt secured and close up the access hole in the roof.

Speaking of the Electrician...

20160126-31.jpg 20160126-32.jpg 20160126-33.jpg

He was on site drilling holes and showing his flexibility.

When the Steel Columns had been erected last week it was determined that they needed some "tweaking".

20160126-34.jpg 20160126-35.jpg

20160126-36.jpg 20160126-37.jpg

Clint the welder arrived to trim, shim and enlarge some bolt holes. The steel supplier had provided the attachment plates with holes. However, the holes weren't 1/2 inch as expected. I think they probably had been "punched" instead of drilled. That needed to be resolved for the anchor bolts to fit through those holes.

At the start of the day a platoon of masons arrived on the building site. The first issue discussed - as best as one can with someone who doesn't speak English that well - was the Styrofoam "Address Block". The fellow I was talking to felt the Styrofoam was too tall. When I took measurements of the bricks and considered a 3/8-inch mortar joint, it did appear that I needed to remove 1/8-inch of Styrofoam.

Anyone reading ever try to cut 1/8-inch off of a block of Styrofoam? I elected not to try cutting but instead used course sandpaper to remove the 1/8-inch.

Styrofoam Address Block with a bit of tape to hold it in position.

20160126-43.jpg 20160126-44.jpg 20160126-45.jpg

While "south of the border" music played on the building site sound system, the bricklaying began in earnest!

20160126-46.jpg

At lunch time, this is what had been accomplished.

After lunch bricklaying began again.

20160126-53.jpg 20160126-54.jpg

As it turns out, I think the Styrofoam spacer was fine before I trimmed it shorter. I'll deal with the upper mortar joint when the real Address Block is installed.

20160126-55.jpg 20160126-56.jpg 20160126-57.jpg

The forecast rain arrived at around 5 pm. The masons worked quickly in the light rain trying to finish up as darkness would be arriving a bit early due to the cloud cover.

I think they got everything completed before they left but I won't know for sure until tomorrow.

Speaking of tomorrow... the rain is forecast to end mid-day. The Roofers will be arriving in the afternoon to begin installing fascia. Shingles will follow that installation. It is looking good for a roof to be on the Lone Beech Garage by Friday!

Now that was an update! Your structure is going to have it's own address?

Bib Overalls,

Thanks! It was a busy day!

Ha!

No, that's just what that size stone is called. An address could be chiseled into the stone but I'm just going to put "2016" on (in?) mine.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Wednesday - January 27, 2016

Today was quite a bit quieter than yesterday. There was 1/2-inch of rain in the gauge this morning but if any rain fell during the day, it was negligible. Some of the materials the roofers needed for the fascia did not get delivered, so they weren't on the site today. Supposedly tomorrow.

When I went out on the site this morning, it was clear that the masons had gotten all the brick work done before they left last evening.

...and then, on this gray morning, I saw something really great.

20160127-01.jpg

Let there be light!
The Electrician had got a couple of temporary lights set up in the Lone Beech Garage. This was a very welcome improvement.

20160127-02.jpg

The Electrician continued to install his boxes for lighting.

20160127-03.jpg 20160127-04.jpg

20160127-05.jpg 20160127-06.jpg

The Framers spent most of their day getting the steel columns set and bolted down.

20160127-07.jpg

This is what a couple of those columns are holding up.
The Mezzanine is looking like a room. I think it will be a nice space.

After all the workmen had left, I took advantage of the temporary lights and worked in the Lone Beech Garage until after midnight.

20160127-11.jpg 20160127-12.jpg

I pumped the water out of the Tornado Shelter - hopefully for the last time.
Then I placed a fan in an attempt to accelerate drying out the Shelter. With the OSB sitting on top of the opening for safety, it's hard to get the moisture completely removed. I sat up this box fan on one end of the Shelter and opened up an area on the far end to get air movement through the length of the thing.

I let the fan run while I got up on the scaffolding and ran a couple more lengths of bell wire from a couple of the garage doors. It was slow work since I was doing it by myself. A lot of "up & down" on the scaffolding. I quit at about 12:30 am.

Than,

Thanks for the encouraging words.

When you get the walls up and the roof on it looks like it's done but there's still a ways to go on the inside. As you point out, visually things slow down considerably.

However, a considerable amount of my project time-line exists after the building is done. The driveways and concrete pad that will make the project complete are still quite a ways in the future.

Not only will that be visually significant but it is a significant line item in the budget. Ha!

Best regards,

Another gray day, another active & noisy day on the work site of the Lone Beech Garage.

Steel...

20160128-01.jpg 20160128-02.jpg

Clint, the welder, returned using a plasma cutter to burn bolt holes in the 30-foot beam. He used a drill for the Chain Hoist Beam.

20160128-03.jpg 20160128-04.jpg 20160128-05.jpg

The 30-Foot Beam holding up the Mezzanine is now bolted to the steel columns and is supporting the Mezzanine.

The Chain Hoist Beam was checked to make sure it was level.

Most of today's commotion was provided by the Roofing Crew.

20160128-21.jpg 20160128-22.jpg

Roofing materials were lifted to the roof via this elevator contraption mounted on a ladder.

20160128-24.jpg

The Roofing Crew began to nail down the shingles.

20160128-23.jpg 20160128-25.jpg 20160128-26.jpg

Over the course of the day they moved across the south face of the roof.

20160128-27.jpg

At the end of the day, the shingles were on the roof and - a good omen - as it set, the sun broke through the clouds and lit up the tops of the pine trees surrounding the Lone Beech Garage.

After all the workers left, I pulled the last of the Bell Wire for the Garage Door Opener Buttons.

It was another day of great progress!

It's been a while since I stopped by. The last time was when the outside frame wall bowed and you had to winch it back straight.
Lots of progress. Looks great.

That's crazy talk. Ha!

I think I could fly up to Evansville, IN, drive 40 minutes to visit my folks and then fly back with the Date Block in checked luggage.

The building is coming together! Thanks for coming along for the ride.

Friday - January 29, 2016

The last Friday in January 2016 dawned beautifully! Clear skies & crisp air ...and relative quiet.

The plan was for siding to be delivered and installed this morning. The workers were briefly on site and then left. The supplier didn't come through with the delivery today.

A shame... it was a beautiful day.

20160129-01.jpg

The morning sun lit up the Lone Beech Garage nicely this morning.

20160129-02.jpg 20160129-03.jpg

20160129-04.jpg 20160129-05.jpg

The Double Door and Window were installed in the Mezzanine.

20160129-06.jpg

I didn't think the Mezzanine could look any better but the addition of these details did.

20160129-07.jpg

After the installation of the door and windows, the trim carpenters worked on adding some trim details to the East Garage Door.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Continued...

The Trim Carpenters left a bit after noon and around 3:30 pm the Builder, the Heating & Air folks and I met inside the Lone Beech Garage to discuss positioning of the Wall Mounts. The Heating & Air folks intend to start installing their interior components on Monday. Exterior components need to wait until after the siding is on.

After these gentlemen left, I pulled the OSB covers off the Tornado Shelter. I had removed quite a bit of the water previously with the Sump Pump but that had been in the shallow end of the pool. A bit of water remained in certain locations and I deployed the Sump Pump again to deal with that.

It didn't take long for the pump to remove the water that it could. I then entered the Shelter with a Square Point Shovel and a plastic 5-gallon bucket. I used the shovel to put mud and debris into the bucket. I made a couple of trips out of the Shelter with a bucket of slop - dumping them outside.

20160129-11.jpg

After I had done all I could with the shovel, I got a couple of rags and mopped up the bottom of the Shelter floor. I would soak a rag in the muddy water and then wring it out into the bucket. I wound up with about 3 gallons of water when I finished ...and hands the color of Georgia clay.

I pulled the completely water-soaked wooden step ladder out of the shelter and placed in outside the building to catch tomorrow's sun. I've left the OSB off the open shelter for the night. I'm hoping to get the shelter completely dried out in the next 24 hours or so. I've left the lights on in the Lone Beech Garage tonight so no one will fall into the open hole in the dark.

The weather was beautiful today. Too bad more wasn't accomplished.

Are you going to get a grinder and slice off those metal tabs in the shelter? Those look like they are just begging to snag a shirt sleeve.

Glad you were able to get the water outta there, for hopefully the last time.

C_F,

Those tabs will be dealt with somehow. Supposedly they will snap off but I suspect more will need to be done to totally eliminate the threat to my hide.

I too, hope this will be the last of the water in there. If the "cement pond" returns, something has gone horribly wrong.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Saturday - January 30, 2016

Weather-wise, an absolutely magnificent day in PTC GA (Peachtree City, Georgia).

No work of any kind on the building site today.

Well, I suppose the fact that the full Dumpster Container was removed and an empty one was left on the site constitutes some activity ...but that was it.

I ventured out early to see how the Tornado Shelter was drying out.

20160130-01.jpg

The floor of the shelter looked like this after a night of drying.

20160130-02.jpg

Early afternoon, I checked it out again. I added the box fan and directed it towards the dampest end of the shelter.

20160130-03.jpg

With the evening's darkness arriving, I did one last check on the day's progress.

I must say I am glad I removed all the water I did yesterday. It is drying out in there but not as fast as I would have thought. I suppose the cool temperatures and relative darkness in the shelter are not the optimum situation for a speedy elimination of the dampness.

EDIT: Acquired following photo the next day.
TR6.jpg

Mid afternoon the Lone Beech Garage had a visit from a friend. I gave him the tour of the garage and then I looked over his recently acquired "survivor" Triumph TR6.

It was a great way to spend the afternoon!

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Sunday - January 31, 2016

20160131-01.jpg

At the end of today the Tornado Shelter really wasn't much dryer than it was yesterday. I had directed a box fan's output continuously towards damp areas and that was somewhat improved but, for the most part, things looked pretty much the same as they did this morning.

20160131-02.jpg 20160131-03.jpg 20160131-04.jpg

Temperature & humidity might have something to do with it. Today was very warm for January with temperatures in the high 60's. (picture on the left)
The center picture shows the conditions on the floor of the Tornado Shelter. It was considerably cooler and almost 50% more humidity. (center picture)
The picture on the right shows why we may continue - should we get more rain - to have some water in the Tornado Shelter. The grade slopes a bit towards the wall on the east end of the north wall. The Ventilation Duct for the shelter is located in this area. If water doesn't flow away from the wall here, it will likely drain down the side of the foundation and find the unsealed opening for the ventilation ductwork. Water could infiltrate via that avenue. This potential problem will be addressed in the near future.

20160131-05.jpg 20160131-06.jpg

I have noted in the past that the Tornado Shelter will be ventilated. Today I pulled the Blower Motor out of its shipping box. It's time to build the box that will contain the blower when it is performing its ventilation duties. That box will be mounted under the north wall's soffit.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

if you have a dehumidifier you could put that in the storm shelter, it would help dry it out. For as long as it had water in it, the concrete and the dirt behind it, has to be really saturated and will take a while to dry out.

Your shop is really looking good and progressing, I look forward to seeing what has been done every night. You need to take time off, I don't get my fix when you go on your work trips, though you have to to pay for it, lol

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Love the build what a great use of space, just a thought that for the last 6 garage doors I had installed [1 in woodshed/guest apt, 2 in barn/shop and 3 in big house] the company just asked where do you want the controls/buttons and did all the wireing [not the electrical as I had provided outlets at each opener]so I am surprised that you had to run the bell wire is that a southern thing???? good building..........Bobbycoke

A thought on the date stone shipping, Large items or heavy like that can be shipped Greyhound bus, friends have shipped auto fenders [Model A Ford] that way cheaper that freight etc. but not door to door you must take to and pickup at a local Greyhound terminal. They were pleased with the service.. now the metal "tabs" usually they just hit them with a 3 lb hammer and they snap off at the wall......if some protrude you could grind or saw [sawzall] them off.....remember concrete is pourous so it will wick up all that water it let in the earth when it gets good and dry [lower humidity will help] you can seal the bunker with a dry-lox type product......don't sweat the small stuff and remember it is all small stuff.......Bobbycoke
