The big humpback is probably a 289 1/2 Mine measures 17" tall so a close guess on the rack is about 42 to 44" tall and 60" wide. I see bottom mount handles & wing nuts on some. The one on top and middle could be on some sort of ball mount the way it is sitting at an odd angle. A more traditional swivel base on the left bottom displayed by It's self suggests something new ? I wish you could read what it says on the name plate on the rack. I bet there is 700 - 800 lbs. of stuff on top off that table

I just got back from a fellow journal writer' house, nine4gmc, and man does he have cool stuff. It was great seeing some else's garage in person with over 6 vises. Somehow this little guy followed me home....

Thanks Nine....

That's cool picture of the vise display.

Those little Parkers are very cool. The next one I find, I will keep. Here's a similar Parker model no 33 I restored last year and sold.

I should have included the narrative to that picture....

It came from Hardware dealers' magazine January 1915
Captioned as
Parker vise display stand

I was cleaning the garage so I decided to use this old drill press table/stand as a vise rack for my Reed collection.

Bagged great idea to make your own vise tree. That makes me think get the tables off old broken drill presses and see if they can be mounted on a support post in a garage or basement.

Thanks. Yea most drill presses and grinder stands have a common post size so it makes it easier.

Bagged- is that an older 204? There's a nice one near me right now. Won't drop below $85, which I guess is a good price. What's that weigh?

If it's a 204R, with the blunt spindle nose, $85 is extremely fair assuming it's in good shape. I have a 204-1/2R and it's one of my favorite vises.

Right. Even a 104r like he one I regret selling is worth $85 all day.

I also had a 204r that I paid around $100 for. Then restored and sold it.

I was out in the workshop today and found a long forgotten 1 3/8 William superwrench. I was able to break that big bolt free on the 449 and move it a couple inches but then it got pretty tight again. I don't want to damage it so thought I'd ask here. Any trick to removing this huge bolt? I've got it doused in penetrating oil and letting it soak some more. Is it just moving in back and forth, back and forth? Thanks - Jim

I don't have much time to play in the workshop but thought someone might enjoy pics of the 449 disassembled. I cleaned the excess grease and dirt off it, but that was it so far. Interesting that a few of the parts had 449 or 49 cast into them. Unique parts? Also the screw head has a very small screw in it. For what? This vise is in really good shape. I can see some traces of black paint and guessing that's the original Parker paint. Pictures show some rust flash from the last couple of days. Is anyone aware of a better or more original example of a 449? Thank you - Jim

Take the screw out and there will be a spring & pin. When you tighten the screw it will put pressure on the handle to stay put.

Vise tree. That's a great idea. Next up is ahold floor model post and base with extra tables to make a spiral vise exhibit. Seems it could store quite a few and take up less floor/shelf space.

I have NO need of another vise.. but if I ran across a Reed 2C vise in decent shape that wasn't too much $, I'd have to buy it. I like those!! :)

I just finished cleaning up this Wilton 4" Shop King. Pictured with an original ad from 1952 Hardware Age Catalog and Directory.

:pimpflashMarty that grinder is sweet. Bracket on one side is not original. Runs smooth just needs some loving. I will one day love to have the time to make her new again. I will be posting on a grinder forum this weekend.

Hi I hope it is ok to post factory new vise purchases here

I bought a new Wilton C3. The ship weight is 258 lbs on this tiny pallet.

I need some experienced guys to tell me how to hoist it up onto the work stand.
I have a plank over the ladder frame rungs and chain hoist, but need to strap it with ratcheting straps

I think some figure 8 wraps around the back and static jaw? Should I tighten the jaw on a piece of wood and lift from the dynamic jaw too.

Only need to go about 20".

Have you thought about separating your new vise into two parts?
If you open it up absolutely all the way the front jaw and slide will drop out and be free of the back half. If you are a strong guy, or if you get somebody to help you you could then lift each half into position. It would be safer to unscrew the front U shaped washer so the handle and main screw could slide out, then the front or dynamic jaw would slide out without all the cranking.

BE CAREFUL moving that beast around. Don't risk dropping it! :shocking:

Do you know anybody with a "cherry picker" engine hoist? That would work great!

Of course it is...

We're just jealous...

I, for one, can't afford a new C3...

Congratulations...

(The easiest way to move that beastie, by yourself, is to split it into two pieces...If that's still too heavy, take the base off it...)

Fraggles: i do like those old York vices and that one looks to be in pretty decent shape.

PoorOwner: congrats on buying a brand new HUGE Wilton C3 bullet. you can't just announce buying a 240+ pound vise and not post any pictures so please take a few and post some when you have time.

the suggestions to take the dynamic jaw out are great ideas to mount your vise because there is no reason to pick up all 240 pounds at once unless you just need some exercise and a sore back.

another tip i use on the big Wilton bullets is to take the screws off the horseshoe shaped retainer holding the main screw to the dynamic and just taking the screw out first. for a couple reasons. it makes the dynamic a little lighter and it is also a helluva a lot easier to get the dynamic jaw screwed back in when you are only having to line up the screw and not the weight of the dynamic jaw too. i'll let TriJeff or others with a C3 tell you their tips if they see your post, but you should be fine moving in three pieces. i'd also take Oldie's tip to remove the swivel if only to set it in place that get the bolts located where you want them easier. nice purchase and don't forget to post up a bunch of pictures because YES you can post new vises on the VISE thread too.
