Minion delivery! This showed up on my porch while I was out. 2.25" clamp on Athol in great shape. I have the original screw to clamp it on. Then these two adjustable wrenches. Pd $40 for everything.

EG: good way to remove the screw if you don't have the socket like i do. post pictures as you have time and also try to describe the situation or the problem as best you can so some of the guys that have these quick release old vises might be able to help you if you need some.

Miles: great find and i agree with Get the Reed 205 is maybe a vise that any of us could use every day in our shops.

Joe: Minions are treating you nicely. also nice job spiffing up the multy angle vise and i like the new screws too.

Get: nicely done and check out Area 51's auction in the near future for all the missing pipe jaws. not sure why they all are missing, but guessing EG might have it figured that the jaws were just not built for the tough old cast pipe that the users were having them hold.

Will do drives.

As far as the jaws go, i only have an old Yost (well and a harbor freight swivel head beater I call Kilgore) with that style of pipe jaws. The "scissor style" seems like a weak design in general.

Weather was awesome today in NC! Spent almost all day outside and in the garage and was able to clean up this Prentiss woodworkers vise. Unfortunately the slide is cracked and will need brazing. I plan to drill a hole at the end of the crack and then 'v' the crack to allow more space for the brazing material to fill.

I'm thinking the pipe jaws got in the way to often and were removed, never to be seen again.

S4cruiser, that little is Parker is cool.

Evergreen, check out this clamp on Athol. Size 0. 1 1/4" jaws. quick adjust, uses a half nut.

Joe, I wish I had minions.

I did find a couple this week without help. Good news on the 404 swivel jaw, the pin wasn't stuck and yet another use for duct tape as jaw covers.

Wrapped up a couple vises today, this Athol # 79 was missing the all the hardware to make it swivel under your bench. For practice I created a swivel base from scratch and copied the Parker's brake shoe design, had to make the brake shoes, swivel clamp and custom shoulder bolt. The jaws were pretty rough and casted in during so I removed them and made a set of smooth and serrated hard jaws. Replaced the handle and painted it with Rustoleum Hammered Brown. Even on this small 3" vise Athol cut the spindle threads using a buttress thread, one of the strongest threads available. I am happy with the results.

I went through this Paramo 6 inch vise and was impressed with the beefiness of the casting. The vise was rescued from a sale in Denver, it was left out side on a bench for many years, lucky it was Colorado and not a more wet and humid climate like the Eastern States. It cleaned up fairly easy. I like how the English cast in the nut, but it is not replaceable, once wore out it will not be easy to repair. Replaced the handle and the Wilton 1760 and 746 jaws fit this English vise perfectly, replaced the loose threads with Heli-Coils. Took a fine cut on the top of the slide to remove the dings and rust, only took .005 to clean up. Painted with Satin Midnight Blue from Rustoleum.

KM: i think the way you matched the jaws to the towers is almost as nice of a job as making a swivel base from scratch. i didn't like the way your new jaws matched the old vise towers as much as old worn out jaws in the past, but your new jaws on that Athol and especially your Parker replacement jaws are almost ART they look so good.

WELL DONE

Get: that could be a reason for the MIA pipe jaws that they were just set aside and truly lost or not passed on with the vises.

ALL: i picked up a little steel table today that i needed the 1/2 inch plate for a project and look what came attached to it. A Columbian 504 in pretty decent shape with some plastic jaw covers.

Super nice job Kevin, I like how it turned out. I've always had a soft spot for the Paramos!

Did yours have a date stamp in the static casting, right next to the jaw insert on the top? I've seen that a couple of times and mine has it there too.

Here's a little 2" Athol I picked up from a GJ member a while back. Just oiled it up a little. Super smooth one finger operation. Believe I'm going to keep it as-is.

Can't seem to find any info on this little guy. I think I remember seeing some other Athol vises with the scalloped lead screw head posted in this thread, but just can't seem to find them.

Twenty five years from now someone will be on the GJ board looking for info on this vise. There will be speculation that Parker stole the brake shoe base design from Athol. :dunno:

Looks like you are about to be snowed in for a few days. Be Safe

There is a reference to Houdini escaping from a Pittsburgh vise in the book "Houdini, Tarzan, and the Perfect Man: The White Male Body and the Challenge of Modernity in America".

bl00 posted the section from the book on Page 689 Post 13775.

I Have been after Google to unlock some of their out of copyright books and came across the account from the convention.

There are also two references to Pittsburghs in the periodical.

Love the craftsmanship! Great restoration and that color is awesome! I like that you used the Parker brake shoe design on the swivel. I feel it's the best swivel base design bar none.

No, I did not see a date stamp. Thanks for the kind words Ziggy. Gonna put one of your decals on this vise. Thanks for that.

Thanks Dean, s14brent and Bags for your posts.

Getridaone, yes the snow is falling, we have had a mild Winter so far. The Parker design swivel base won't fool anyone since all the cutter marks are still present but it sure locks down. A great design. I drew up a 4-1/2 inch design and just scale it down to fit my vises, got another one just about done. Thanks again guys.

Get rid-I saw a little Athol like that on the classified a few days ago...way cool!

Km-great work, as usual!

All- anyone have a 'ribbed' swivel lock down nut for an Athol? I can give ring diameter a little later.

I just picked up some veg tanned leather scraps for making wet molded soft jaw covers. I'll post some pictures of the process and results...

Rock Island 3-1/2” Vise

I have been enjoying this forum for quite a while, but this is my first post.

I picked up this garage sale find the other day and would appreciate any info that forum members can provide. It’s only a 3-1/2”, but it is a monster 3-1/2 – 17-3/4” long x 11” wide (swivel base), 4” wide (body) x 10-3/4” high. It weighs 63 pounds!

Other than the one “ROCK ISLAND” marking on the side it has only a single 73-C stamped on the underside of the base. It has remnants of yellowish green paint. As you can see from the photos it is in great condition – missing one screw to hold one of the pipe jaw clamps in place.

The first two photos are of the Rock Island 3-1/2” beside my Columbian 3-1/2”. The Rock Island dwarfs the Columbian – 63 pounds versus 8 pounds – the Rock Island is 8 times the size/weight!

What are some alternative coatings for vises? Seems like painting is just borrowed time for the coating to end up chipping off.

Nice score el! Welcome to the place that will cause you to buy more vises then you'll ever need, unless you already have that vice...

Mr- I've have boiled linseed oil on a stripped vise Ive had outside for a few months. Other then being slightly yellowed looking, it dryed and hardened and is standing up to the elements just great!

Elbaite: now you might know why i praise Rock Island vises more than most of the rest. nice find and guessing the Columbian might be moving either to another bench or a friend's garage soon?

welcome to the group and feel free to post a WELL DONE or just ask a question or two if you have any because we are a pretty good bunch here at GJ and especially on this thread.

Dennis: not nearly the Columbian you just mounted on your own bench is it? even if it was in similar shape your baby blue older one is superior.

Oldie: any more Car or vise ****? i'd be afraid to drive that out in the streets around my house. man that is a good looking ride.

EG: you done with those leather jaw covers yet??

Drives-right now I have an Athol apart, a Prentiss apart, a yost apart, and leather scraps sitting in a bag. Those are just my vise projects! Ha. Baby steps, I get 10 mins here, 10mins there, you know the drill. Soon I'll get to it....so I say!

Columbians sure can take a beating..
