Nice getrid.
Any idea on why the pipe jaws are always missing? Are they not hardened, and usually break?

Pm me. Ive got some for you...Joe, I've been looking for small athol vises, and I can't find any! They are my favorite. Score man!
ALL: i picked up a little steel table today that i needed the 1/2 inch plate for a project and look what came attached to it. A Columbian 504 in pretty decent shape with some plastic jaw covers.
But drives is trying to sell some of the vice collection down!

Wrapped up a couple vises today, this Athol # 79 was missing the all the hardware to make it swivel under your bench. For practice I created a swivel base from scratch and copied the Parker's brake shoe design, had to make the brake shoes, swivel clamp and custom shoulder bolt. The jaws were pretty rough and casted in during so I removed them and made a set of smooth and serrated hard jaws. Replaced the handle and painted it with Rustoleum Hammered Brown. Even on this small 3" vise Athol cut the spindle threads using a buttress thread, one of the strongest threads available. I am happy with the results.
I went through this Paramo 6 inch vise and was impressed with the beefiness of the casting. The vise was rescued from a sale in Denver, it was left out side on a bench for many years, lucky it was Colorado and not a more wet and humid climate like the Eastern States. It cleaned up fairly easy. I like how the English cast in the nut, but it is not replaceable, once wore out it will not be easy to repair. Replaced the handle and the Wilton 1760 and 746 jaws fit this English vise perfectly, replaced the loose threads with Heli-Coils. Took a fine cut on the top of the slide to remove the dings and rust, only took .005 to clean up. Painted with Satin Midnight Blue from Rustoleum.

Super nice job Kevin, I like how it turned out. I've always had a soft spot for the Paramos!
Did yours have a date stamp in the static casting, right next to the jaw insert on the top? I've seen that a couple of times and mine has it there too.
What are some alternative coatings for vises? Seems like painting is just borrowed time for the coating to end up chipping off.

Twenty five years from now someone will be on the GJ board looking for info on this vise. There will be speculation that Parker stole the brake shoe base design from Athol.
Looks like you are about to be snowed in for a few days. Be Safe

Anybody recognize this vise? My son found it in a back corner at work.. jaw missing, etc.. he's looking to see if the tapped holes are roasted and otherwise get more details on it...

Beautiful, magnificent things were made in this country...
Alas, so many of the plants are shuttered...
However, in the bottom of a dome...

Now if Dr. Scott had made the jaws Ala' C.Parker that would have REALLY messed 'em up in the future!![]()
I think it's a Columbian.
