That's the biggest Monarch I have ever seen. Would look great next to my two bulldogs.
It's on Craigslist with no price but inviting "best offer"
That posting is in danger of being flagged down. ( not by me) Violates C/L policies.
If it was closer, I'd certainly throw a hundred at the guy for starters.

Joe-it's in doyelstown, where the Moravian tile factory is. I once saw a man with a beard, in a blonde wig, wearing red lip stick and high heels, in a dress, taking a tour. No joke. Yay phili

But I pass no judgements...

The tile factory is really worth seeing.

ALL: i like that little dolly or cart almost as much as that old Monarch. can anybody tell what the # is? i had a #223 that was over 100 pounds and 6 inch wide jaws and that vise looks like it might be a #225. i don't recall how Prentiss did Monarch's numbering but it might be a 7 inch or 8 inch vise??

Auction on Craigslist?? IT HAPPENS and i usually don't partake

EG: thanks for posting your newly created swivel pin over on the 101 thread. not sure exactly how you did it, but looks like it will really do the job intended.

Drives-I don't know why I completely forgot to take pictures. I thought about it, then totally skipped my mind at that moment....

But, I can kinda redo the process later this evening.

I called him. Nice guy, but he's waiting out higher offers then what I can spend now. He said a couple hundred. Silent bidding more or less.

Here is my 6.5" Monarch, from Bethlehem PA. Pd $150

Joe: is your Monarch a 225 or what # is on the side because looks similar to the one for sale or auction?

VA: 8 and 9 inch vises will be in HIGH demand as long as you and Demo and a couple others are alive and well and owning the bulk of them. :dunno:

Hey folks, long time lurker (3+ years). Found this Columbian 503-M2 on the Charlottesville Craigslist last night for $25. Picked it up this morning.

A little wire wheel work later it is starting to look like something.

And finally after some paint I had lying around, I think it came out pretty well.

And just for the fun of it, I put it on the utility scale my boss gave me the other day.

FORD That's a first rate job. Except for the Parker jaw style these "T" style are my favorite.

Hemi and topop: thanks for the welcome and kind words.

Va: Well, now that I've taken the plunge I'll see if I can kick it up a notch or two.

I also have a Wilton no. 4 that I picked up a few months ago. It's currently bolted to my workbench being used. I'm undecided if its gonna get cleaned up and painted or leave it as is and use it.

Nice Chicago bullet and welcome to the group!
Looks like it might still be wearing its original paint. If so, I would just clean and lubricate it and put it back to work. Classic old tools like classic old cars are only original once.

Picked this up on my way to the gym this morning.

Parker 955 with almost perfect jaws. No patent date. I thought maybe pre-1930s because the handle has round ends. Don't know what's going on with the set screw in the handle. 5" 85lbs. Paid $80

ALL: that top 8 vise list must have been for a budget under $75 and even at that i didn't see one i'd buy. i've heard that Tekton has a lifetime warranty they honor so if i NEEDED a vise that one might be on top of the list.

I think i remember hearing that some of the tradesman Wiltons were made in China, but all the bullets were US made.

EG: thanks for posting your leather jaws over on the 101 thread. you've been busy in your shop this weekend. nice work

McB: i seem to miss seeing the broken off supports in pictures, but that vise looks like the dynamic has been brazed so it would have saved me a trip to catch it in person.

They were for a period of time offshore (not sure about China), but I thought they brought them back, and wasn't the indicator removable jaws? (offshore didn't have them)

There should be a spring under the screw on the spindle.... To keep the handle from sliding when the spindle is rotated.... The way it is right now is not OEM..... I'd ask for a partial refund!!!:rocker:

Outlaw: i thought it was China, but not 100%. anyway yes the solid jaw and i think Balane mentioned the swivel bases were less stout on the imported Wilton Tradesman versions. The US made tradesmans with all their different labels (Snap On, John Deere and others) are great vises. I do like the C series and bullets a bit better, but i wouldn't not buy or use a Tradesman.

Balane: i haven't seen one of your gems posted lately so have your days of picking up a vise and restoring it the same day slowed down?

Hemi I know what it's supposed to look like. I was just pointing out the fact that it's not original. I just haven't gotten home yet to take off that screw yet to see the damage. Hopefully the the threads aren't too butchered so I can install a correct style set screw and spring. The handle is getting cut off on this one anyway, so I will be able to clean it up easily.

Shift,

I have in kid in college who is close by and almost sent him to go get that one until I noticed that the dynamic support is broken off. What a shame, it was nice vise.

Good catch McBrownie:
I didn't see that at first. If that vise was next door to me I would still buy it for $50. Worth more in parts, right?

Drives:
I too thought it looked repaired but other camera angles showed that area better. Parkers have a noticeable taper in that area that when dirty shows like a repair. I think the broken support shelf, although a really serious flaw, is the only problem with that vise.

Gotcha....Recently I bought a Reed vise to find out that the spindle and nut had been converted from acme to unc......Actually very nicely done......I'm going to sell it down the road......You never know what you you'll find when you start pulling a vise apart:eyecrazy:
