Old drill press maintenance

I bought this old CM DP a month ago, it works great.

I'm wondering if there is any maintenance to do, aside from the occasional belt?

Does anyone have a pic of a speed reducer for it?

Very nice DP! Look up GJ'r JZiggy. He sources slow speed pulleys for Craftsman DP's.

There's one version of a speed reducer from Craftsman. It's called a "Vari-Slo". You change speeds by moving the lever.

But good luck finding one. And if you do it won't be cheap.

You can use the other versions that go inside the column as well. I'm in the process of building one right now.

Check out this thread.

The Vari-slo isn't a bolt on. its a competently different head.

Mike:
Keep some oil on the quill so it won't wear prematurely. Same on the spline in the quill pulley, a few other places that rotate, albeit more slowly.

Quill oil is likely to be spec'ed as Vactra way oil from a lathe or mill, but if you can get a small container of chain saw bar oil that should also do. You want something that will "stick" and not drain off, and ordinary lubricating oils do just that... (Vactra is expensive and not available in small quantities, and a gallon of the stuff would be a lifetime supply for half of GJ... I'd bet a 1 oz. bottle would not be used up in my life on one DP...)

Keep the rust off of it.

Don't make or add to an Arc of shame.

Google the owner's manual and you can find one in PDF to download for details

Please educate me.

My drill press is a model 100. I assume you are saying his is a 150.

So the Vari-Slo will not fit the 150. :headscrat

They look like the same head to me. But I'm a newb to them so I don't know. I'll take your word for it but can you explain what are the differences?

Or is his a model 80 and it won't fit that?

you have to have something to attach the Vari-slo piece to: Different head, Looks similar, but...

Mine is a model 100 and it has the vari-slo.

What model is his??

I guess it really doesn't matter. It's not like he's likely to find one. But you never know,,,lol.

Hey Mike. What model is your drill press,,,lol.

Both the 100 and 150 had it as an option. I always assumed the head was notched to take it and had mounting bosses.

I have no idea what model it is..lol

Thanks for the info, guys! My next step is to clean the rust off of the column.

I want to mount it on a cart of some sort, but I don't want to lose any stability.

As far as the arc of shame. I think if I did put one in the table, I would keep that secret to my grave. I can see how it could happen, but I'd hate to be the one to do it!

That 150 isn't mine, I linked to a pic off the internet.

Does your table have the ability to tilt? if so, likely a 100, if not, then it's a 150.

100's came with a tilt table; the 150's it was an option.
