OTC: great to hear you want to start the 519x's thread. i'll add what i can that are the Facts and of course add numerous questions and maybe an OPINION.

ALL: so BC might have more 519x's than anybody so while we are talking about them i thought i'd post up his family picture. anybody have more or a family picture to post get them ready for OTC's thread which will be in the Vintage Tool section?

McB just posted something interesting about the 391 part of the 519x's catalog page over on the vise repair 101 thread that i'm sure might come up in the new 519x's thread.

I'll cast another vote for taskmaster. (Mine was clearly labeled Taskmaster) I used to have one of those but gave it away to a relative who was planning a 1200 sq. ft. stick built garage with a built in 16 foot long workbench yet he had no vise at all! Imagine that. :dunno:

When he received it he told me that his long gone father used to have one just like it.

Seems I've found another of those laptop mounted vices :p

Any ideas of the make of this one?

Will get some better pictures next week when I have some more time.

I found a Reed 204 in the junk shop about 3 months ago.
https://scontent-lax3-1.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/12669643_10205855640650526_6443086367113127536_n.jpg?oh=db9ef9020ecd57fb0111993489a25b68&oe=5739FB5B

Did anyone else notice that this Reed has 204H cast into the side? I've only noticed 204R or 204 before, what does the H stand for?

It was the wing nut that made me buy it :) Interesting swivel as well, the vice sits on an upturned bowl which has 3 spikes to dig into the bench top.

CW: old screw mount to a laptop. Can't say i've seen that vise stand before and might never again.

that is sure one cool looking vise. looks a lot like a Bison (FPU) or Leinen, but that base and thru bolt are making me think it was one of their predecessors. do you know who the maker is? also can you maybe post a lot more pictures of that cool looking vise?

Econ: good eye seeing the H. I can't say i've seen one like that or know why or what it means.

Fretters: looks like you changed your Avatar?? is that Bert??

Can't blame you for being tempted by that wing nut. That does look ****. :D Can't wait to see some more photo's of that. Definitely not seen one like that before. The style of the vice portion itself appears not uncommon, but never seen one with any form of base/swivel like that.

OTC: it took me more than a few minutes to find Big Caddy's 519x's family photo, but here it is and i'll post it on your new thread if BC doesn't.

Fretters: i had to look up Scooter and found out he's the gofer backstage on Seseme Street. seems like a happy guy so probably a good fit for you. i do remember Jake having something in his sig line about him or you being a muppet.

ALL: anybody know what happened to BC? Bigcaddy hasn't posted on GJ since August. hoping he's ok and i used to have his email, but since my laptop started crashing i'm lucky to find yesterday's emails. anybody know?? here's one of his pictures of his 519x's vise family and a couple of his and THE first 5198.

COR Fabrication in Racine WI just made this vise stand for me and my Wilton. I wanted to share it with the group. I think it's way too cool to paint, what would be my best option for clear coating it?

You can just spray clear coat rattle can but it will actually look a lot better if you paint it with a hammered paint in my opinion.

I would like to know if you have any movement as I built with similar material and it sure moves because the base plate is like a spring. Mine is 1/4" steel and hard to tell from the picture what yours is.

CW: i agree it's a cool looking vise.

Dog: nice stand. you can wipe on BLO (boiled linseed oil) and either let it air dry and put several coats on or if you have a way to bake it on it will really shine. also there is a vise stand thread you can also post up your stand and here's the link

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799

MR: you'll find many many answers over on the Vise Repair 101 thread from impact screwdrivers to drilling off the heads. or soaking in a various bunch of chemicals like kroil, PB blaster and other mixes that the guys are making.

if you read some of that thread and still have issues post some pictures and ask questions over there and the guys watching that thread that deal with these screws daily might have another idea. good luck

VA: i don't know how you do your searches because it took me forever to look up BC's 519x's family picture. you sir are amazing when you find the stuff in this thread and i hope you stick around longer than i do.

The thick paint is probably making it look like an H.

It's a 204R.

:headscrat

Hard to tell; bumped up the scale:

Well lets try that again...

Finished up my dumpster dive and even scored a swivel base for it last week. The base was in the same dumpster I found the vise in, months later though. Nice and tight, unsprung and will hold a piece carbon paper all over.

ALL: so is anybody interested in talking about who made the Craftsman 519x's in a thread? about 18 months ago i found my first one on a bench of an 80 year old machinist that reluctantly sold me his 5196. since he had several Wilton bullet vises on other benches and mill vises on his lathe and mills and drill presses he really didn't need it. anyway he tells me that Starrett made it for Sears. interesting because i'd never heard that. so i bring it up on this thread and Outlaw is convinced that Columbian made them.

ok no big deal and we are still looking for a 5198 and then about 6 months later Oldie finds a 5198 and BC buys it because the guy is asking too much for Oldie's budget and shipping costs on top put the deal out or reach which is understandable and BC was a short drive away. then the conversation comes up again and several other 5198's surface along with a few 5197's.

Yesterday morning a GJ member (Off-Street Parking) posts on the Vise repair 101 thread teasing me if i'm going to start a thread about who made the 519x's that i mentioned i would 7 months ago. i guess it was about the time i almost had a heart attack moving a radial arm saw and started the weight loss thread. anyway the subject comes up again WHO MADE THE 519x's.

ok now Outlaw makes a nice post and this time thinks that REED is the maker and you can read his post on the 101 thread. i'm not still saying Starrett made the 519x's, but i'm not saying they didn't and i still think Rock Island is in the mix because the dating on the 519x's and size/heft is very similar to Rock Island's vises.

so maybe we'll never know who made the 519x's, but there must be a GJ member who worked at Sears or one of the vise companies that made them or their dad or grampa did that is still alive to shed some light on the subject.

i'd start a thread and will this time unless Off-Street Parking does because i'd like to be asking the questions and posting pictures and learning what others know as FACTS. also i think the 519x's are a vise worthy of their own thread, because they have the look and work amazingly well.[/QUOTE]

Drives I'm on the Columbian band wagon. The 519X series is just too similar to the rest of the Columbian made vise's ... at least style wise.
And I'm not sure Starrett made the Starrett named vise's. Athol's yes but the Starrett named ones I'm not convinced .

I thought of hammered paint but I kind of like the naked look on this one. I have four mounting holes and four jack screws on the base, I'll let you know how it goes in use. If I get any bounce from the base I will try gussets on the base. I considered gussets but thought I might get my feet caught in them (!).

A nearby 6" Holland sold recently on the auction site for $150. I think there were only 2 bids. It was in fantastic condition, but non-replaceable jaws = no bid from me.
