:dunno: Look again; I'm pretty sure that is U.S.A.

Go back and look at the one I posted. I can make out the C on the 8" unit.

Regarding the Babco vises:

After checking information on Dayid's page it looks line the Babco vises marked "Oakland CA 94621" like the one in question were made in Japan. Later ones not marked Oakland I suppose would have been made in China.
Babcos pre dating the one in question (also from Japan) were marked Oakland 14 which was the postal zone for Oakland prior to national zip codes being enacted in 1963.
94621 is the current zip code for that area of Oakland.

Although I live only a few miles from Oakland, CA I have never seen a Babco vise marked Oakland at a local sale. Just the later inferior models.

Please reference the one I posted. 94621, clearly states "Made In China"

You're right. After a second look I can see the Made in China.
The ones listed on Dayid's page (model 140) evidently had made in Japan marks. I'm sure that as time passed, the Babco company found it cheaper to use a Chinese foundry instead of Japanese manufacture. So if somebody could find out when that change happened it would help date Babco vises.

I've developed a "thing" for Reed and Athol vises, though my daily use vise is a Paramo #5. The Reed 204 I'd bought and cleaned up, I gave to a good friend. Kinda miss the vise but I'm glad I gave it away. I'll find another.
Yesterday, I "happened" to find myself at the same shop I'd found the Reed in. Walked out $108 lighter but heavier by an Athol 624.

I must live in a parallel universe---my daily vise (er, vice) at work is a Paramo, and I just recently sold my Athol 624. FWIW, it sold for just about what you paid, so you did ok.

A pair of old vises, 2 1/2" & 7/8" They look like they had been dipped several times in BLO when I got them. A few trips to the E Tank took care of the rust underneath. I made the handle for the screw that tightens to the bench and a spring for the small one. It was something different to work on for a change. The last picture makes the 5" Reed look like a giant.

I found an old catalog page with the small one on it. It appears that I made a handle for no reason, it didn't come with one on it ? It is a Boker brand

Well my e-tank is frozen. I had 2 vises in there cooking but the below 0 degrees Fahrenheit is just too cold for it.

Cattle tank heater, perhaps?
Aquarium heaters might be better. They come in different wattages...you wouldn't need much if you insulated your e-tank.
Or maybe wrap some heat tape around the outside.

You need to migrate out west to the old Conneticut Western Reserve (aka northeast Ohio). It was a balmy 18 degrees today. Warm in comparison.

-36 CELCIUS last night here. Nice and balmy.

Here's my latest, Record 84-34. Did the best I could with the raised lettering, but some was down too low to get it painted with my lack of artistry.

Also an old Sawa 12" rotary table, picked it up for $300 on company dime (I pleaded the case we needed one), tore it down, cleaned everything other than the cosmetic mung on the base, and put it back together, barely flicks the dial going over the 2 portions that were covered in rust, maybe 0.0001" low. Shouldn't matter since it's mainly going to have a 4-jaw chuck on it.

Ah, the spring thaw is just 2 months away.

Frozen solid? or Just surface?

Let's see...

Where do I begin...

So far in the five Winters we've spent down here on the Redneck Riviera, it's been below freezing on nine nights --- it's never been below freezing in the daytime...

Yesterday, it was 70 degrees, and sunny, with a 5 to 10 mph breeze out of the SW...:thumbup:

Today, the weather sucked --- 60 and cloudy...

Oh well, damn the bad luck...

Hi guys,

Been lingering here for a while and looking in the small ads for a suitable vise. Spotted this today and am not sure whether I should go for it or not.....

https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/schraubstock-150/425157115-84-15340

Jaws are 150mm and the guy says it is a "leiden" vise. Anyone heard of leiden or am I right in thinking that he means "leinen"? :)

He wants 90 Euros which is 100 Dollars. Is this a fair price?

Hope I am posting this in the right place?!

Cheers,
Mark

Well if I don't miss my guess is that is a bison vice. They seem to be an up and coming company for collectors. I haven't seen that style before but it looks good. I wouldn't be hammering anything on that anvil though.

As far as value, that's really hard to place. Depends on your marketplace for product like this and desirability. I believe that's a well made vise and it would be very serviceable for you

Kitch: if it is a Leinen it's worth the money so maybe the spelling error if it is will save you some money. here's a picture of my 150 cm Leinen and it is a great vise.

Joe: there are a few European vises with that sort of static moving design and Bison are great vises too.

Oldie: my Rock Island 577's that have 6 inch wide jaws also have 3 screws, but might be the first time i've seen a 4 screw Jaw that Meatsis posted on his American Scale #79

did you hear back from BC? I'm not sure that guy ever slept so hoping he didn't have a heart attack or something worse happen.

Drives --- I haven't heard a peep out of BC...

I don't know if "No news is good news, or not..."

GASP!!!:thumbup::evil:

I guess the designers didn't want that old pesky problem of "Becoming unjawed" to keep popping up...

Yeah true. The bad part is I'll be in Tulsa, OK for most of April for work. Maybe I'll have to go vise hunting while I'm down there.

POSTED NO HUNTING

:Gun1: :willy_nil :bigun2:

:lol_hitti Joking. PM me while you're here. The vise market here is hit and miss. The few good brands showing on CL in recent months have been priced ridiculously high.

Really want a Heuer vise. Currently only have a woodworkers vise.

Like this one?

I've derusted it and coated with BLO. My plan is to paint it blue and polish it up to sell it. pm me if you're looking to buy one.

As promised Friday night, here is the restoration of the Prentiss 254 I picked up. The first picture is from Friday right after I got home.

217c0441467834743718c537c0bc9d97.jpg

First step simply is to unscrew the dynamic jaw all of the way and put it out of the base.

29eddc9db9984efe34748e52aa8172d4.jpg

To remove the lead screw from the dynamic jaw, on this particular model, you have to pull this clip out. I caught the edge with a screwdriver and pulled it up a little, then grabbed it with a pair of needle nose pliers and pulled it the rest of the way out. Then the lead screw pulls out. The spacer inside falls out after the lead screw is removed.

6443aa718e9807b9a825954262d482fe.jpg

Next step is removing the jaws. I hit them with a wire wheel to get most of the built up **** out of the slot, then pulled the screws out.

Once the screws are out, I tapped the jaw with a hammer to get a little separation then tapped a screwdriver and pried the jaw out.

4bd2c1a29b089d49d16ee462d2fb2f72.jpg

Once I had a little wiggle room, put a screwdriver on each side and pried the jaw fully out.

a97b8ea0f83e87ee6c61c8905ba065fd.jpg
Time to fire up the wire wheel!!! No pictures of me in action as I was by myself in the shop today, so I simply took one of the wire wheel I used with the dynamic jaw in the picture.

1498b2b93ce63a59d275073f1eac6215.jpg

Here is the dynamic jaw mostly cleaned up next to the base.

dba156f035771f698cbc78eb6b87b0cc.jpg

Next up the base gets the same treatment.

cfcb818e3bb87a10c6e3ee6e6c250696.jpg
Followed by the lead screw and handle assembly.

b73e4970126beb07431552cdc1a6f5c9.jpg
After cleaning, I wrapped up parts that I did not want to get paint on. If you look closely in this picture, I rolled up a little piece of a Scott shop towel and put it in the screw holes so I wouldn’t gum up the threads with paint. Then I proceeded to wrap up the slide with painters tape.

a05920fea757ee8d80ce7ea9d8c3432c.jpg
Here is a better shot of the paper towels in the screw holes, as well as a balled up paper towel in the main nut area to keep paint out.

67c3cc77209fa56a6e4e9b4e8875ec9d.jpg

The color I chose is a little different, it’s Rust-Oleum Gloss Seaside. Found this can at a local trucking salvage store for the princely sum of $1.95. It is paint and primer in one can.

d8758c12c17c0738583da21e3957b1f0.jpg

Excellent coverage, put a couple coats on.
3974a49527ef76f2902a83d636d5c6e8.jpg

To do the raised lettering, I rolled up a small piece of paper towel and dipped it in some black paint then dabbed it onto the lettering.

453b07e4fe92226740d3bc0d1dff60c4.jpg
03bdff20ab0c5bcc8ce11592aad1691b.jpg

After reversing the disassembly steps, here is the finished product. I need to put another coat of black on the lettering; and before anybody asks about the other side, I screwed up on the lettering on that side and had to put a little more of the base seaside paint on it. So the other lettering will get painted tomorrow.
