I don't know for a fact, but my reasoning is as follows:
This way it prevents the door from opening more than 3 inches. It also allows time for the solenoid to actuate before the door begins to move. When new the lock pin moves quickly. Over time it may not.
You definitely don't want to mount the lock pin so close to the roller that there is zero clearance or binding could occur and the lock pin would not retract.
