I just received my 3800 today and was wondering if there is a reason the lock needs to be installed 3 inches above the roller?

I don't know for a fact, but my reasoning is as follows:

This way it prevents the door from opening more than 3 inches. It also allows time for the solenoid to actuate before the door begins to move. When new the lock pin moves quickly. Over time it may not.

You definitely don't want to mount the lock pin so close to the roller that there is zero clearance or binding could occur and the lock pin would not retract.

That makes sense, just bothers me that it would allow for the door to be opened even that little bit.
