FB: do tell how one lines up and gets all those holes drilled so you can bolt them
Please post how you attach and set it up with the landing gear. That's a great idea!
WP_20160207_001 by Al Capone, on FlickrFB: looks like you tripled your investment with $20 worth of bolts. do tell how one lines up and gets all those holes drilled so you can bolt them if you would. so many guys do it like it's nothing, but for some of us knowing the tips and tricks that we didn't learn watching a dad, gramps or mentor would help.
thanks and i too want to see how you attach the plate.
good luck and looks great so far
ALL: so does every GJ member own a mag drill or do tell how you all drill through 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and bigger steel plate? also do you use any oil?
What does the gate valve do?
I just thought that since it was a water cup and I wanted it to look different, I would put a valve there. It's kind of like a truck that I did many years ago where I put the alternator on the rear end. People would always ask me why so I made this sign for shows.
... To each there own, but I am practical that way. I apologize if I offended you.
So does that mean that, you might consider the whirly jig. I will keep my eyes open.

What's the advantage of bolting it instead of just welding it?I made this stand for my vise a while back but it moved around too much. Once I picked up a grinder I took the vise off and drilled some new holes. It works much better as a grinder stand. The top is about 32" off the floor and it seems like a pretty good height.
The base is a truck brake drum I brought home and knocked all the rust off with a needle scaler and wire brush. Looks like I should've painted it... I cut rough circle out of a 1/2" plate and burned some holes in it to match the bolt pattern on the drum. It's pretty rough but for my first time cutting anything useful with the torch I was happy.
A coworker welded the pipe to the plate and stuck a 3/8" plate to the top that I drilled and tapped for the vise.
I need to go ahead and paint the thing once it warms up.

Drivesitfar asked me to post my bench grinder stand, that I built, in his thread so here goes.
.......
I realize that the stand is not everyone's cup of tea but...
Cup of tea? It's like a puzzle to me, only industrial version of one. So as I'm looking for ideas to take a grinder from a welding table I have and mount it by itself somewhere I come across this cool idea but it's racking my brain because I am trying to zoom in and figure out how the two horizontal pieces were put in the plumbing. Right under the base is what looks like a cross, then pipe *******, and then elbows. Maybe it's just Sunday and my brain is shut down but how did the small horizontal pipe ****** get in there down below ? By threading really tight and then loosening /threading into the other tee as you tightened the above assembly? Just curious anyway.
Be cool if that valve had pressure so when some kid come by and opened it, he'd have a water fountain..be some good iron content too I guess in that drink.
Cool restoration mechanically and cosmetic by the way. I'm new to the board and looking to improve efficiency in my shop. Just brought in a scissor lift dock platform on Friday, weighs about 2,900 #'s & trying to figure out how to use it for various projects. Thought being able to adjust the height would be a help.

Thanks! I've always been a little... let's just say, "different" in the stuff that I do.

I love the pipe fitting grinder stand! I have also seen alternators mounted off the diff, a trick to hide them on traditional hot rods where it is undesireable to have any visible modern parts that aren't "period correct".

Oh well I guess I am going to have to eat my words. Techie1961, I did not understand why you put the alternator on the rear diff. Now I understand please accept my apology.

So we were cleaning some stuff out of the shop today and found this stand but need some ideas what I should do with it. I had a 6 in bench grinder on the flat plate a few years back but it's shot after using so hard to clean stainless parts with a SS wire wheel. Now it needs a repurpose or a new home.

JB & ALL: "to maintain some of the bare steel you might have in your shop might i suggest BLO (boiled linseed oil) and you can keep applying coats as needed. "
So I looked up the BLO on Amazon and looks like everyone raves about this for wood projects like axe handles and such. Not finding any comments on using on steel tables and / or vises??
Last night I picked up another Craigslist find ...... Needs some tlc and maybe some linseed oil?

Nice vise and stand, Drives!DOC: what was that stand originally? did the member on the other forum mention it? thanks for sharing.
ALL: I picked up a decent vise and found this stand under it. the old truck rim is full of concrete so old guy was a little surprised when I took the vise off and then lifted the stand into my Honda Pilot in one lift. it was a little more difficult taking it out and putting it in storage.
anyway thanks guys for posting up your vise and grinder stands and anybody else can sure post theirs even if it's close to what has already been posted.
thanks
