Hi Guys and Gals of GJ. Im fairly new here . but been lurking for a few months.

Most of my power tools are bigbox junk. so this drill press is my first real power tool. I know little about it at this point. Ill be trying to do some research over the week or so to see what im really getting into. ive got a quote from Buffalo Machine Tool for a used table. but im waiting for a quote on a better condition one.

The drill press came from a factory before the gentlemen i bought it off of got it. it was missing the table and a few other cosmetic things i could see. I will be tearing this down and trying to bring it back to new, I will need lots of help from bearings. springs. to decal replacements. i really have no idea where to start other then start taking it apart. though i want to make sure i take lots of pictures as i do. do re assembly goes smooth as possible.

It was made in Kitchener (ive yet to research the dates they were produced in kitchener ontario) wich is about 15 min drive from my house.. so that is kinda neat.

I guess this post is really just me saying "Hey . i just bought a drill press and i have no idea what im doing.. please help"

some of the things i noticed rite away
-drive belt is frayed
-needs table
-has replacement motor (1/2 hp)
-needs new handles (has 1 of 3 and its welded in. hoping i can grind it out)
-smallest groove on pulley on motor has small dent
-hole in the top of pulley cover (possibly suppose to be there?)

Where should I start? clean it up then take it apart and catalogue parts and hardware as i go? is there a certain order of dis assembly that will make it easier? any tips and all info on the drill press is greatly appreciated

here is a few pics of the 30 or so i took today after i got it in the basement

Im looking to keep this thread going with updates every few days or weekly.. depends on how busy i get.

Welcome. I can't offer much in the way of rebuilding help but it is neat it was made close to your home. Definitely a keeper and lots of knowledgeable folks here will chime in.

Z3K3Y,

In addition to the help you get here on GJ, you will also find a great deal on info including manuals for your DP at Vintage Machinery website.

Here is the link http://vintagemachinery.org/home.aspx

Just click "Machine Info" on the top banner and it has a great deal on info on the manufacturing plant and many of the machines built by Buffalo and Canadian Blower and Forge

Hope this helps.

I have that same drill press in my shop and it's been great!
I hope that small dent in the Pully doesn't cause belt vibration for you because they're a PITA to find replacements for.
Will you be using it for metal work or woodworking? If woodworking then I'd suggest building your own table and forgetting the replacement.

Z3K3Y, welcome and as far as the hole in the cover goes I bet it is factory. My DP can slide up and down the post as originally there was no table, it was gang head press. So the hole may be for that. Look around see if there is a clamp to let the head slide up and down.

Nice drill, I have a couple of them and have been looking for depth gages for both.

Hi Pierre.. Do you happen to have any spare parts? I got a table for mine yesterday along with a bunch of stuff for a benchtop 15. i still got to sort it all out to see what I need. thanks - Chris

Well i had a major breakthrough yesterday .. i managed to get a table and handle. and a pile of other parts..
now im kind of stuck again.. thinking i should switch everything over to the older model to make it complete.. or just put the table and handle on the newer model and source parts to complete the benchtop.. decisions decisions..

heres some pictures of all the stuff i got yesterday.. all i really wanted was the table and the handle. but the guy gave me everything . including the can of paint and decals for 50 bucks.. the second table that he gave me is aluminium. he said he had never seen one before. maybe its off a different brand drill with a 2 3/4" column.. who knows

though i did spend 40 on gas driving from guelph to chatham and back.. it was well worth it.. next step is to start tearing down the floor model and get everything bagged and tagged. i really need to get myself organized and start talking to the DP guys over email. i get confused sometimes on here between using real names and user names.

Well folks. Ive been plugging away at this thing for a few hours whenever i can.. its almost all back together. just finishing up some final touches before it gets plugged i. I really didnt do too much photo taking through the process.
I was able to keep the original label attached to the belt cover and still do a decent job of painting around it. The small red canadian blower and forge badge on the side popped out easy, so i was able to save, clean and paint under that. I went with krylon bahama sea blue . im still looking for a decent table. but other then that. she is nearly done

The angled shots really remind me of the "RocketMan" helmet, with the swoop. Nice job.

Thank You! , It was my first drill press attempt. i currently have a henry craftmaster scroll saw in line next

Great thread! I have two Buffalo Forge Model 15 drill presses, that Canadian logo looks real nice!

FYI, Buffalo Forge reorganized a few years ago as Buffalo Machines Inc. You can still buy new parts and get service and support from their facility in Lockport, NY.
