Good idea on brazing. I picked it up for $45 and it may end up replacing my Wilton tradesman. I think I will just clean it up and put it to work, the jaws are in great shape.

$45?!?! I'm really jealous!!!:shocking: Even with the repair, that's great.
You'll really love your Parker when you start using it. Although I'm biased towards them.

All,
Here's an Erie No. 0S pipe vise that I finished. It's a small one (forgot the cola can for size). As far as I know, it was manufactured in the early half of the 20th century.
Something odd, one of the square head bolts required a 12mm wrench. I guess that there is a size between 7/16" & 1/2" out there.

Normally, I just restore the mechanics and machinists vises and flip the rest, but this was easy fun.

Mark Nice job. I've restore several of these pipe vise's both post and yoke style and have done real well with them. I work around a lot of the trades, plumbers , fitters and such so they are usually gone quick. Again , nice work!

Found a couple tiny little vises at my aunt's. Sadly I assume China. Quarter for scale.

I picked up 2 vises today. The first is a Woden 186B 2 (sits nicely beside my 186B 1) . The Second vise is a mystery as of now. Its nice and crusty , But what can be made out is "No. 40 Canadian" and the stamp "Patented" on the same side. It has 4 inch jaws with a 5.5 inch opening. The only canadian company i know of is RAE and i dont see any RAE markings on it. im going to take it apart tonite and see if i can find anything more. help me figure this one out fellow GJ'ers! well after pre writing this i went to take some pictures and took it off the base to find more info . but no go.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I started cleaning it and found this part that needs to be replaced also. Is this something that is out there, or are they like unicorn tears .

There's a good chance you can find one here: http://www.benchvisejaws.com/parker-collars/

I picked up a Record No.83 QR vise today! Pretty happy to say the least. I am regretting leaving the Woden No.00 behind, but cant have them all!

Yup, that's the same one. Apparently the original buyer was a no show and it was back up for sale. I've been wanting a QR vise for a long time, and didn't mind the 1.5 hour drive out there on such a nice day. If you're craving a small vise, the same seller has a nice selection of paperweight sized vises you should check out.

There's a mention of the 'Canadian' vise on this page of the thread, but not any mention of any specifics. My first guess would have been a RAE as well, but not sure either.

Thanks for the info I was just looking at it with crud on it and realized it was not broke just need to be cleaned up more. I all so thought it was supposed to be a complete circle not sure why just did. Did get all the crud and rust cleaned up got it back together, kind of like it as it is but may try and restore it or paint it and polish up the jaws. I looked at a lot of the restorations by the pro's on here and I am not sure mine could stand up to those.

I got a call for a Parker 6x today. I can't find specs. Can anyone help me out? Thanks:headscrat

Here's what I have on it Joe. It's the No. 6 not The No. 6X so the X may be a bit heavier?
No. 6 has 8-1/8" jaws and tips the scales at 237lbs. But again the X may be heavier. It also has the heavier slide support. Good luck

Some of you might have seen this little Wilton I picked up from a hoarder house.

I put a coat of Rustoleum Hammered Silver on it yesterday. Once it drys, I'll get it back together and snap another picture. .

All,
Last night was a good time for some gold nuggets of vises. I answered a CL ad where the seller was clearing out his Grandfather's garage. Most of it was hand tools. Here's what I bought:

1. A Littlestown No. 400. Great shape. No abuse except for a small bend in the swivel lock handle. Most of these vises I get have the base broken and/or the ledge under the jaw face is broken off. Glad this one will be an easy restore.

2. A Champion corner style woodworking vise. I guess "L"vise may be another name?
Patent date:1-2-17. From what I've read last night, it was built between 1917 and 1957.
Interesting vise. I saw some featured here a few pages back. I'd like to see how to best use it.

3. Old but no-name jeweler's vise.

4. Around a foot of railroad rail.

All for $30.00.

After I loaded my trunk I went back in to see if there was anything else. I picked up a set of Starrett hermaphrodite calipers for $2.00 (last picture).

Hope this is a sign that this year will be a better year for pickin' than last year.

Drives & Joe,
Thanks for the kind words on my Erie pipe vise. Next pipe vise restorations in the pipeline (pun intended) is a Reed arbor vise and a pair of Armstrong Vulcan chain vises.

All,
Here's a Craftsman bench vise that I completed yesterday. The biggest challenge was that the spindle was bent, along with the handle. No problem with the handle, but the spindle took an hour. I've always loved the lines in the body casting, which opens a world of painting possibilities.

Looks cool reminds me of a 50's era tail fin on a Chevy

Looks rough but I thought it might be fun to work on it. Also it has pipe inserts and a little hardy hole so I thought that was neat too.

I'll soon be browsing the how to fix up, rig up and hot rod your vise threads.

Just threw up in my mouth.. Saw an old ad on CL for Parker 6x RR vise, $200 (no pics). Called the guy,..yeah he had it, but he had no calls so he SCRAPPED it. The #6 was 8" fixed base. Well over 200 lbs. I am so sick about it...:wtf:

Sadly, I imagine quite a few old vises have been scrapped. I'm a little surprised at it happening now, given how low scrap is... I'm seeing 2.5 cents/lb so he got $5 for it.

Should call him back and see if you can recover it from the yard he scrapped it at.

Yeah that one hurts! 237 lbs for the no. 6. the 6X is probably heavier. 8-1/8"jaws. My book is from 1887 and shows it. so an old dude too...

One for the English guys ... or perhaps we've raised enough interest in the past with you over the ponders that you might have a guess?

What's unusual about this Parkinsons Vise? (other than the fact it needs a good clean)

Vice is spelled the older English and American way (Vise) instead of the usual way that English people use.

Or, as it was made in Shipley "You can always tell a Yorkshireman, but you can't tell him much"

I'll give a hint or two, there's something about the jaws and also something about the naming that is different from a No 38 that you would usually see ;)

That's an excellent vise. Especially with the pipe jaws and cut tool. Great find!

CW: sorry I don't have my Parkinson vices down pat so i'll wait to see. I do like the quick release and that style as I'm sure you do too.

JOE: keep your eyes on Craigslist because unless another vise guy knows the scrapper I don't know many scrappers that would melt a vise that big if it's in decent shape. it might just end up on their bench though. sorry for your loss because that Parker was probably pretty rare.

Can't really see properly but is the dynamic jaw higher than the static one?
Maybe from a different vice?

The only Parkinsons I own is a woodwork vice so I'm not sure what I'm looking for as far as differences go.

What is it then.

Yea, at our local scrapyard, the good stuff don't even hit the ground, and the fairly good stuff gets caught on first bounce.---All the fellows working the salvage yard keep their fingers on the pulse and you just can't get no good stuff there.---What they don't want for themselves that still has value, they yard-sale or EBay and they've got nearly nothing in it.---It's a pretty good gig.---You can buy steel, aluminum , Stainless, etc., but no good toys.---But I really can't blame them.---I'd do the same thing if I worked there.---Do you think I would let a 208 Reed hit the ground just because some guy didn't know what he had.---Well I guess I would have to if he pushed it off his truck, but then I'd run and get the fork.:bounce:
