With the nicer weather finally showing up, I finally was able to get out to the garage and get a start on a couple of the vises that have started to clutter up the bench.

The most recent purchase, Record 83 QR, 3.25" jaws. Will get a teardown, repaint and bolted to the bench. Looking forward to this one!

I picked up the Wilton 600 last year that had been painted bright yellow by the PO. I started scraping the paint off last night, but was able to take a wire wheel to it today at work, and tidied up some of the battle scars.

I wish I could have just saved the OG paint under the yellow, hopefully can track down some of the elusive Rustoleum Verde Green locally.

ahhh rite on. ya im sure ill see some more details once i get the wire wheel to it. look forward to it actually. looks like it might of been green originally. im gonna try to find a spray as close as possible to the original

you can also look from the bottom for the pins.

I'm pretty sure the original for those was a forest/john deer green or close too it The were the "economy line" as they didn't cone with the reinforcing steel rod(s) (seen pics both ways) the better Parkers came with. So while "economy", they are just as good and any other vise of the day.

Good Buy

Tried, it doesn't exist in Ontario. Get ready to pay out the *** for it. :eyecrazy:

We have seen everyone's toolboxes so let's see the vises! (no, not vices :))

I'm sure there are some really cool ones out there.

Large or small, let's see them all!

Include COO and DOM if you know it!

Wow, some really cool beasts in this thread. Mine was cheap and serves me well. I assume it's made in China and it's about a year old.

TEKTON model #54004 $46.99

It's just nice to have a vise.

Diag: I don't know what you think, but the casting on your big Wilton looks awesome and it would do well with BLO on it instead of paint. a month or two ago Joe and Bagged actually put BLO on their vises and baked it on in their little smokers and those vises look amazing.

I guess by what Joe says that the BLO baking will run you out of the shop with the smell or maybe he was talking about something else. :D

nice looking old QR Record too.

Joe, it would not have been to hard to add a little arc to match the end cap radius. A 4-1/2 inch disc sander would take to time at all if you have a lathe. I would not pass up a great deal on a baby because of that difference.

Kevin and Joe, thank you for your thoughts on the untapered end cap. I had thought about shaping it as you describe, and will do so as I clean it up.

Seems there are always some strange things to be learned about Wilton bullets.

If its documented those are Factory from Wilton, I'd leave it. They would be even rarer and potentially more valuable to a collector once the provenance is established. Gathering a few examples in pics goes a long way toward that...

Good advice. I will be very patient before I make any changes. Thank you.

Of course, now I need to view every Wilton bullet photo I can by scanning eBay to find more examples. What are the odds that I can resist buying some of them. Like waving a red flag in front of a bull....

Wasn't that the Baby? that could narrow the search...

On a serious note; was there a link on the comment "I saw/have one too?" ("Working" no time to look)

JREB: that poor BABY vise has been treated terribly in its past and glad to see it found a good home. sort of like a rescue pet.

that front looks a lot like the Cadets so wondering if they tried it on a few BABY bullets first so they wouldn't waste much material. can't say I've seen any like it, but you might PM BLUE FROG because I think he has a shelf full of BABY bullets. also check the Wilton date stamp thread because there are one or two members that might also own six or a dozen of the BABY bullets that might know more.

I smiled more than a little with the viewing of EBAY for pictures was like putting a red flag in front of a bull. :bounce:

Really like this Rock Island going to use it and the Parker 974. I spruced it up a bit, not like some of the experts on here but looks better then the pawn shop restoration.

Looks like a fairly common China vise.

It may be Taiwan. My Dad toted it home from a farm tractor type store in the mid 70's. Used it a little but never had it right and busticated another older one, in a hurry moved this in to service and it worked so well it never was replaced. We had a cheater on a 48 inch pipe wrench the other day with the pipe vise.
Its all position pipe vise too, I use that a lot.

Here are two more, now you have seen three. Save your money, they look neat but no good as an anvil or a vise. They would do in a pinch if you had nothing else to work with. It is like a cheap homeowners vise to a farmer in the old days.

Sorry those vises are a little dusty ! You can see my finger prints.

Oh I wasn't going to go buy it. I just saw it on CL and thought it was interesting. It's in Iowa somewhere I think.

Yesterday I received a shipment from the West Coast with 6 vintage Craftsman items......It arrived via Fastenel® in perfect condition......Today I uncrated the items and tucked them in my garage......Included are 1/3 hp flat top, 1/2 hp round top grinders, 5176, 5163, 5196 & 5197 vises.......I'll eventually get around to spiffing them up and adding them to the collection.....

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately I just sprayed Tremclad 'Hammered' Silver all over it. It would only take 20 mins and the wire wheel to remove the paint and can always try the BLO treatment. I'm really not too impressed with the Tremclad Hammered finish so far (really, it seems to be a metallic silver more than anything) so may change it out sooner than later.

Some of you might be interested in this blacksmith collection in Ross County, OH, about 60 miles due south of Columbus.

I'll appreciate if anyone can identify the vise.

Be afraid to take a guess with the blurred numbers.---But the size looks like a 208R or a 206R at the least.---Aside from that, if anyone needed all that stuff and could make the drive, that's not a bad deal.

Beautiful! I recently also purchased the Craftsman 5196 and I just LOVE it! If I ever come across another one (or even 5197, 5198), I won't hesitate a second to buy it.

Could that Reed be a 216 Filer's vise? Biggest one I found in an advertisement was a 215 but who knows? The jaws do seem a little higher than my Reed 206.

ALL: while we are guessing at big vises how about this one in Albuquerque.

for only a $1000 you can buy this stout steel table, huge vise and an anvil on the other end. any thoughts on the yellow vise? how about that paint job??

Hemi: NICE HAUL
