FR: That 5182 Craftsman made by Reed probably in the early 40's or 50's is worth the asking price and more because that vise is every bit as good as a 4 inch Wilton if it doesn't have any issues. it looks good in the picture.

the only decision you need to make is do you NEED another vise and do you want to drive 2 hours to buy one?:D

Came across this Craftsman 5182 on Craigslist a couple hours south of me. Might go look at it if I have time Friday or Saturday. Ad says it opens 12", but I assume that the lead screw it won't have any engagement at that point.

Sears must have used model 5182 on a series of vises. A year ago someone posted an older 5182 with a swivel base (post 29272):

Picked up this beauty on my lunch, quite a surprising lunch, Ive been looking for one of these, and it isnt what I expected to find on my lunch!

its a 8 inch, missing its degree base, got a couple "lightening" holes in it, and it could use some, it weighs as much as I do, but otherwise in beautiful condition. Now to find a 6 inch!

Was up in NH today and came away with this PERFECT Parker 207. Not a scratch on it. Was in a saw mill, covered in saw dust grime. Not a scratch on it. Pin comes out, jaw swivels. Pd $80.

Ok, un related, check out this Sears heavy metal shear, oh and for good measure, another shot of the guys 8" American scale, oh yeah, and his 365 lb Fisher Norris Sawyers Anvil.

I didnt buy it because I dont have VA Grousmeman's $$$$ :lol_hitti

Worked on this Athol not as refined as Joe Stripper or Kevin's work and thank you both for the pointers I also need to learn how to do handles. The forging sure is rough on these tough to get the letters painted without smudging need to redo that. Had to mill the jaw faces they were bad, word of advise don't try and use a belt sander on jaw faces you can really screw them up:(

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the Wilton, pretty happy with how it turned out!

My Record No. 23.

Picked up a few years ago from Nottingham for £20. It had been sat out side and was as rusty as buggery and the mechanism was very stiff.

A good brush out and grease was all it needed.

Very nice vise! What is the jaw width on the #23? I just started on my #83 and it is currently in the same state as yours originally was. Grease and sawdust that has turned to fossilized amber, and the casting quality is awful... Can't wait to finish sorting it out!

Great find! It's road trip season again, so really, what's a 4 hour round trip with a good excuse in the middle? :3gears:

Chilang, that Athol turned out really nice! great colour choice

So I googled the patent number on that Craftsman 5182. Pretty interesting read, it basically talks about the set screw in the pin that holds the main nut in place and takes the slop out of it.

Yeah it's the patent by Reed.

Your vise is the 4.5" model of my Reed 104R that I have and one I also restored. One of my favorite vises.

Thank you very much Diagnosis, your Wilton looks absolutely top drawer!

The jaws are 4 1/4'' wide and it opens to to 6 1/2".

There's still some original paint left on the sliding jaw! Which after 6 years of ownership I've only just noticed!

And to think I was going to buy a brand new one...

bagged: judging by the pics of your Reed 104R, it looks to have the cast in jaw inserts since I can't see any lines indicating they would be a seperate, removable piece. I'm guessing that the Craftsman 5182 is gonna have the same cast in jaw inserts? Can't really tell from the pics from the Craigslist ad...

Judging from the spindle shape, your 23 must be much older than mine. I'd bet if you tried some solvent and elbow grease you'd find quite a bit of original finish.

So I've got this love/hate relationship with "nearby" results from Craigslist...

This Parker has been on there almost a month. Looks like somebody smeared and gobbed black paint all over it (including the slide, but hard to tell) and the stand at the same time, with out removing the vise first. In the close up pic, the paint looks thick around the nut holding the vise to the stand.

This one is well over 3 hours one way from me down in North Carolina. Mostly posting for discussion, but perhaps a GJ member closer to it can get it if it's in good shape.

Very nice indeed, I also have a couple of old Record (Made in England) G-Clamps in the same colour.

I'll see if i can find a date code or any markings on it, its due a strip and clean anyway. Along with the welder, trolley jack, toolbox drawer slides....

Gutted, arrived last week but first chance to check it today :(

Looks like a dropped whilst shipping as the crack shows clean grey iron

I hope you're going to play hell up with the courier/RM over that? Gutted for you. The one good thing is that it's easier to work on that type than any other, for repairing it. Definitely not something you want to see when you unpack it though.

This isn't the No 8 though, that is being collected in person at the weekend. I can forsee problems with the courier as I didn't notify straight away and have got rid of the packaging. Not sure how I missed that when I got it out of the box.

It was only ever going to be a display piece so depending on what happens I may use it a a practice piece for welding up :(

CW: Really sorry to see a crack like that on one of your vice family members. I hope the #8 you are picking up is in great shape without any negative surprises. good luck

FR: that black paint looks like Por15 paint so it might be more than a little hard to remove. if Meatsis thinks he sees a weld there probably is one and guessing with the expense of Por15 the intent was to try to really hide it. it's good to have choices and if you are driving a few hours for a vise might I suggest finding other things to buy in that area or even meeting a member of GJ that you haven't met yet and have lunch or maybe do a trade.

fordriver,
looks to me like that paint is hiding some big ugly welds underneath. Along the base.

Appreciate the insight. [emoji106] The thick paint had me wondering if something was up.

Thanks for the heads up on the Por15. I've never used it but it makes sense that it's probably hiding a poor repair. Good idea on trying to meet up with a GJ member in another area if I go to look/buy something. I'll keep that in mind.

All,
Here are a couple of vises that I restored a few weeks ago, now mounted to a pedestal. I hope to find a good home for them.

Mark: WELL DONE SIR. I think I see some wheels under that stand. did you post that stand over on the vise and grinder stand thread and show how you install the wheels? also do they lock in place?

vises look great and anybody would be happy to have that duo in their shop.

I just hate it when you think you found a good vise. I left early and was #3 in line to the basement. I was hoping the price was going to be less but at 450.00
I had to leave it. The estate sale guy wouldn't haggle price on the first day. The Prentiss #22 was in good shape except for the broken off porch over handle and the swivel pin was stuck. It was mounted on steel beams that held up the overhead trolley track.

All,
Thanks for your kind words.
Drives,
The stand was a grinder stand at one time that I won at an auction. I decided to sell the grinder separately. It sets on a caster base that was cut for the base, no wheel locks. I'll let the future owner choose what to do concerning that.

So, here's a pic I thought might go down well on this thread... I've just picked up a great Record 75 Vice to compliment the Record 74 Auto-Vice I fixed up (see here).

The 75 also needed a little bit of work, and while I was de-burring the lead screw head I realized I had a pretty good illustration of the sense of scale between the two vices:

25553780774_15c6dfa89e_b.jpg

As well as the 74 (foreground, holding the lead screw from the 75), you can see the jaws of the 75 on the far side of the bench. On this side of the bench, you'll see the third vice in the set of "red records", the two-and-a-half-inch #80 "Imp", clamped to the bench top ;)
