The white planks on the back still have the original paint from the old house.

Actually Jake you posted in garage sale and under the terms of this thread it is perfectly acceptable. And I for one love to see things like this.
I hope it sees a few more generations.

Picked up this corner hutch from my grandmother today after a 25yr "Take it / Don't take it" game of roundabout. The cabinet was made by her father for my great-grandmother, around 90yrs ago from reclaimed hard pine tongue and groove floorboards, after their first house burned down (the first of 3 fires that this wood survived). Its 86" tall by 46" wide and only 17" deep. Even the nails were reclaimed (no screws). The door hardware was changed out in the 60's. This thing has survived generations of my family, I'm just the latest custodian. Because of the old growth pine, its heavier than it looks.

The hutch was built entirely with basic handtools by a man who could only afford the essentials. No power tool has ever touched this wood, even the mill was powered by water.

We love our vintage tools and our cool new shop toys, but there was once a time when all that was available were the very basics. Next time you're out hunting, don't forget to take a little time to acknowledge the simple tools abandoned in the corners, or :lol_hitti

Jakemac:

Well said and I'm glad the cupboard from you family line, has now found another home to be enjoyed and appreciated.

Jake, I am glad you will being holding the hutch for the next generation. You should write down every one who has owned it and as much as you know about it and put it on top of it where It will not get lost.

Absolutely Jake, Write it all down, get as much info from your grandmother. Write it all down and put it in a envelope and tack it down on all four corners on the back of the hutch so it won't get lost. That is really cool.

I have my great grandfathers safe, just a little one. And I have his oak secretary with the shipping label on the back. His pocket watch and my great grandmothers Singer treddle machine.

OK back on track but really cool Jake.

I know that this isn't a tool, but I'll explain why I posted it as I go.

So, why am I posting this in a tool forum ?

(The cabinet is in my garage, because I'm still not sure if my ceilings are tall enough for it yet) :lol_hitti

Saving a family heirloom is ALWAYS OK!

Neat story and retrospective!

Well I finally obtained a 2"x 72" belt grinder. It's been on my list for a while, just never have come across one. I decided last year to buy the parts to build one, even bought a 2 HP Baldor motor. Just the wheels alone would of been about $150.
Won it on a online auction. There was three , the Stephan Bader that I won, and two Wilton square wheel units.
I paid $285 for this one.
2ee3597aaf04c3621a43c674ff90e657.jpg

It has a 2 HP Baldor, 3450 rpm, so it should eat some metal.
I also picked up a Buffalo drill press with a DC motor and variable drive unit. I'll use the drive and motor on my press or maybe on the belt grinder.

I kinda of choked on the price I bid up to, but by the time I bought the all the parts, I'm not far off. The other two went for $ 350 each.
From reading on these, the Bader is a much desired unit.
Now I need to buy some 2" belts
I'll post up more pictures when I pick up.

Day 2, City 2: With an hour to get dinner, and computer work beckoning back at the hotel room, I limited myself to a 20-minute run through a big antique mall just before closing time. 3-second scans of over a hundred vendor stalls turned up these the finds.

Thorsen 5/8" ignition DBE wrench
Channellock 420 pliers from the "Champion DeArment" era (1950s?).
Bernard sewing/belt pliers, made by W. Scholihorn

I paid $15.40 for the three, more than I would have at an estate sale, but not bad for an antique mall.
Day 3, City 3: Today, I'm in Clearfield, UT, about 40 minutes north of Salt Lake City. Meetings wrapped up at 4:45, so time for dinner and some quick tool hunting. With no yard sales in the middle of the week (and strangely, hardly any estate sales around here at all, even in the next two months), I turned to the old standby, a local pawn shop. The first one my phone took me to was out of business, but at the second one I hit pay dirt. This place was big and clean, and had a ten gallon tub full of mixed sockets at a quarter apiece. I pawed through them for awhile and here's what I took away for $4:

Six Indestro Select 1/2" drive 12-pt sockets; 1" thru 1/2", but missing several sizes. I spent extra time trying to get every last one of these, but I'll always wonder...

55f3246f1ae43bad8065c7a9334ac708.jpg

Four vintage Proto Los Angeles 1/2" drive 12-pt sockets; 1", 25/32", 5/8", 9/16"

1867b7ca647bcd3b485a6ac480246b8b.jpg

Grab bag of other notable brands, including Williams, Indestro, Channellock, S-K and Indestro Super

0b88da2d6b89ea8b3c7d128aebb1f5cd.jpg

My suitcase is getting heavier. Next and final stop is Tacoma, WA. Looks like I have the entire afternoon to kill before catching the red eye back to Boston. Any one have picking recommendations in that part of the country?

Some great finds there guys!

I hit a big tool sale last weekend. Didn't get there early but still found some cool things. Prices were cheap and I made a pile of stuff.

Spent around $10-15

I like the oddball DBE wrenches (Perfection, Merit). You should post pics of them on the DBE thread over in the Vintage Tools forum.

Blue Bomber next time you're in St. Louis, you can try this place. Not far from the airport and every now and then have some decent deals. https://www.facebook.com/WeBuyAndSellTools/

Also depending on where/how much time you have there is an antique mall off of 270/olive rd in castillion plaza. Its also not far from the airport.
Good to know about, 10thanncobra. Thanks!

Long time lurker, just started posting but love these threads.I don't have many pictures Ill try to get some soon but its been a really slow start to the garage sale season here, not many locally. I did score a set of snap on mid length metric sockets in metal magnetic tray from 1992 that had a few sockets im assuming were warrantied out over time for $50. Last weekend got a couple wrench racks and a 1:18 old shelby gt500 diecast model for $10. The latest score wasnt from a garage sale technically a coworker dropped a huge bag of sockets on my box at work and said you want these? I said sure, turns out he had done a sidejob for someone who used to work in some manufacturing plant. Gave him probably at least 200 mixed sockets of snap on,williams, misc and apex stuff! He had picked out some to keep but the rest went to me.

Looks like tomorrow's "on the way" stop will be an estate sale here:

https://www.estatesales.net/WA/Puyallup/98372/1125519

Wish me luck--I may have to buy a 2nd suitcase for the tools...if there are any good ones left on the second day, that is.

Bill just to further muddy the water, I've not seen a 15/32 in ANY drive size. zero, zilch...

!3, 15, 3,27, 29... Nada... (out of well over 1300 sockets...)

I have seen those 15/32 as well along as another oddball size, 13/32. Seemed to be cheap stuff so I threw them in the garage sale pile.

Day 5, City 4: Finished with meetings at 1245, with all afternoon to kill until my redeye back to Boston. My warm up was a small yard sale advertising "Lots of tools". They must have gone in the first wave, cuz pickings were slim by 1pm. I did find some treasures for $3:

Proto Professional combo, 15/16"
Proto Professional chevron combo, 3/8"
Two tiny Dunlap ignition combos with different sizes at each end, 5/16" x 11/32" & 15/64" x 1/4"
Indestro Super 12-pt T-driver, 7/16", appears to have been manufactured as a single unit
Proto Professional 1-1/4" 12-pt deep socket, 1/2" drive (Lots of Proto out here on the Left Coast)

The main event was a bit of a let down, but to be expected on the 2nd day. I put the 25%-off discount to work, getting all of the below for $5:

Pair of Wards Lakeside offset DBEs, one bent
Wizard 6-pt offset DBE, 3/8" x 7/16"
Wizard Loc-Grip H 1208 locking pliers
Plomb WF-52 12-pt 1" socket
S-K 40428 deep well 6-pt 7/8" socket
Set of Indestro Chicago DOE ignition wrenches, 1/4" x 1/4", 7/32" x 15/64" & 17/64" x 5/16"
Herbrand ignition DOE wrench, 15/64" x 13/64"
Duro-Chrome G64 ignition DOE, 7/32" x 1/4"

I may hit up a few more sales on the way to Sea-Tac. Seems there are a TON of sales out here today!

Two more stops, one a dry hole. The last, though, was a clean out sale by a storage locker buyer. Nice guy, chatted up both him and his wife and got to look at his small (and NFS) DBE wrench collection as well as his other keepers in a big two car garage. I drove away with the following for $3:

J. H. Williams 10" "Superjustable" wrench
Dunlap Lever Jaw 6" locking pliers
Cee Tee Co 6" pliers
Forge Tuff brand 25' tape measure (cuz u can't have too many...)

6d91c50d858c4d49d32abaeac66da60f.jpg

Okay, I'm done...really! Heading to the airport. I'm satisfied with my cross-country picking finds. I bought a few things I wouldn't normally, but I might be able to make most of it back if the Craftsman magnesium brad nailer is a simple fix. Cheers, all! Hopefully, SWMBO won't ask why my bag is so heavy. ;-)

Hit up a couple of estate sales yesterday that looked promising but only picked up this glass front garden thermometer, Matco labeled Knipex diagonal cutters and a half box of clean white lint free rags for $6 total

Had 4 Targets of Opportunity this morning.
First was only 4 houses down the street but was a bust as far as buying anything however the estate sale lady gave me her number because she has an upcoming sale with lots of guy stuff and is letting me go early! :)

Second one all the tools sold before I got there.

Third one I wish I had gotten to first. Paid $120 for all this. Picked up a repainted S-K Sherman Klove top box and a All American by Waterloo homeowners roller cabinet and mid box with tools. The decent stuff inside the S-K box included Allen brand hex keys in pouch, Bonney wrench and brake pliers, 4 Barcalo Buffalo wrenches, Champion wrench, Giller adjustable pliers, Hinsdale and Indestro wrenches and P&C ignition wrench, Mac Sabina obstruction wrench, a twisted Plomb DBE, Proto easy out, S-K drag link socket, S-K Wayne adjustable pliers and Wiss snips.
Inside the All American were a Blackhawk screwdriver, Bonney wrench, Channelock hammer head and pliers, Craftsman hammer head, rail road chisel, Lufkin folding ruler, Mac tie rod separator, Pony mini C-clamp, Proto 1/4" parts ratchet, socket, nutdriver, wrench and screwdriver, Stanley sliding square and other odds and ends.

I also picked up this Columbian D44 vise in decent shape and a chunk of railroad iron. Not pictured is 10 milk crates to help organize the garage!

I hit a good sale today and am very happy with it all. I cant believe some of this stuff was still there as I got to the sale 2 hours after it started. The first thing I saw was the Sandvik scrapers and extra blades . The large green tin snips are also Sandvik. 3 NOS hatchets and other goodies. I spent a $110 on all and should get my money back on the 2 scrapers and extra blades. The Slater Banko axe is one of the nicest axes I have come across.

I just looked up Sandvik scrapers and blades on Ebay. I had no idea! Thanks for educating me!

Here is the rest of it mostly odds and ends and no real good tools. The blackjack kit is $40 new

Well after going through the tools more i think i might get burned on this deal! Most of the tools have been very badly abused and are broken and the ones that aren't are junk china tools. The only things that can save me are the vice, tool boxes, and chainsaw. Lesson learned on huge tools lot's on craigslist i think this guy just wanted his **** moved so he threw in a few things that were worth a little to make the lot look better. I don't know what i was thinking.

Nice axe's LOL. Is that red vise one of those early 50's Craftsman art deco ones?

So here's part 2 of my $120 haul today, I saved the best for last! The first thing I gravitated to was this 1/2 HP Block grinder on a Craftsman pedestal, runs smooth, light works, water tray is there too! Needs one eye shield.
From the same sale I also picked up this wood carpenters chest, it had the handsaw holders in the lid and two trays. Had a lot of bolts and steel and junk in it but a few goodies as well that are in the trays after sorting out, A big Bonney wrench with "modifications", bent large Ridgid pipe wrench, a leather hammer and a ball peen and more goodies.

4th sale was a bust so I went home and unloaded around 11. I had to go back into town to pick up prescriptions at 3 PM so I went a little early and hit 2 more sales that started at 2 PM. One was a bust but the other I picked up this old hand push cultivator, Fulton plane, spoke shave tool, True Temper Rocket garden shears and a fork head for $12 total.

Marty, Lots o' goodies but the "sleepers" are those replacement faces for plastic hammers, and the boxes of wedges. You don't find those types of things very often!

Lots of great scoring going on guys!

What about the circular saw? If it works, it could bring $20-$30, no?

Outlaw, good eye on the hammer tips and wedges and yes I don't come across these too often, the tips especially. Can't believe they were still there staring me in the face when I got to the sale. These should be snatched up quickly.

OK it will be Pics tomorrow, but after work today I went over to a friend of my son's to pick up an old trailer designed for behind a motorcycle. A small aluminum cargo box, (tilt top) and a "cartop" tent (I haven't opened it so no clue how big/small...) last registered in '97... For free. both tires were flat and busted beads, so we picked it up and eased it into the back of my Minvan, (barely fit, width and height) which gives you an idea how small it is! (The tongue stuck out and I roped the hatch "closed"

Cleaned up & repaired (no major structural damage - needs completely re-wired and of course tires...), My plan is to use it behind my Samurai, I'll add a rack on the front for my smaller ice box, and I'm thinking two of my small prop tanks (and a place for a spare) and I'll have a mini version of my "big" tent trailer!

The also gave me two milk crates full of old rusty tools that belonged to his grandfather. many of these will be restore projects, one had a wood handle the literally disintegrated in my hand...

It was sort of sad; the family (maybe the father, but I suspect the mother as well), are low level hoarders. Lots of clutter, not stored properly in many cases (as in out in the weather) so lots of damage. I left far more than I took. I had to leave an old hand made wood plane that was again disintegrating/rotting. They have been in the same house for 25 years or so renting, and the owner wants to sell it. So they are moving and have to dump almost the entire hoard.

Besides the trailer there was a branding iron, at least two vises (nothing major though), and lot of other salvageable but rusty stuff. a few will be wall hangers but some will make it back in action.

Sorry for the teaser, but I needed to tell about it!

EDIT: I measured the "BOX" and the outside dimensions are 34 W X 51 long and 18" deep.

Currently it has the 8"rim 4" tires (whats left of them), and I think I can move the axle so it is "Spring Over" and lift the trailer, then put the 12" rims & tires and get better ground clearance. Not quite an Off-road trailer but far better than the average tent trailer including my current larger trailer. I'll have to see what condition the tent is in. I already know I need to replace the cover...

So far the research has not fond any info on line on it...

I haven't gotten much this year mostly little stuff but I did score this today at an estate sale. Saw it tacked on the wall of the garage. Asked them I could could buy it. Guy said go ahead and then just gave it to me. About 17" X 22". I kind of want to frame it haha.
