So this thing just dropped from Ryobi and from the sounds of it, it's pretty damned cool. Essentially it's a 2hp garage door opener that becomes a sort of HUB for your gara...

Interesting idea, but as soon as I saw that it was Ryobi, no thanks.

Can't imagine trusting my garage door every time I need it to, to open to a company that produces the very bottom of the line budget power tools...

Agree with above posters afraid of Ryobi's track record.

I've tried a Ryobi cordless drill and corded palm sander in the past four years. The drill lasted about nine months, the Palm sander made it about 18 months.

Both were used in light duty home-owner use.

Today probably wasn't the best day to post such a kooky device.

It is... an interesting concept. I don't know how much companies have been trying to innovate in the... "Garage Door Opener Space" but I guess this is something.

Maybe next we'll see Milwaukee make one. I bet that would sell like Milwaukee-cakes.

Great, more **** to carry on the truck! Unless they send me one to try for free, ain't gonna happen. I'll let someone else be their guineapig. Too much **** to warranty! Interesting concept tho.

Don't let the 2hp fool ya. In order for the sensitivity adjustments to work correctly, the door still has to balanced and working properly.

eh... Ryobi isnt the best stuff out there, but I have 2 of the big ol blue drills and circular saw that wont die, finally replaced them with the new greenish offerings only because the blue ones were getting pretty beat up, it was time for new batteries, and I caught the green replacements on sale dirt cheap.
I also have Dewalt, Rigid, and a couple others... dont notice much of a difference.

The only Ryobi that has failed me is a orbital sander that the lower bearing finally locked up in, but I really used the hell out of that thing, along with other family members.

No matter what it has to be better than the noisy, slow, chain pulling pos' the builder put in our new house.
I really miss the screw-drive openers I put in our old house.. very fast a nearly silent.

I thought for sure this is an April fool's joke because of all the accessories, but it is real and Home Depot is already selling it on their website. It is pretty pricey at $250 plus $50 to $100 for a battery for the battery backup.

Ryobi makes decent tools, but some of them are under powered. I was using my Ryobi 18 volt circular saw and it kept stalling. I finally had to go get my Makita 18 volt circular saw and it had issues with the same cuts. (I got the Ryobi free with a bunch of other Ryobi tools I bought.)

The cord reel is kind of nice, not so sure about the rest of the accessories.

The one thing I want in the next garage door opener is wifi control. Its an easy way to let somebody into the house, and if the garage door is left open, you get an alert.

Here you go, control via your iPhone or android. It also logs every time the garage is opened/closed if you should choose and you can allow and manager other users to open the garage. I've put these in 2 garages and they're great.

looks and sounds like a great ideal, I figured it was an april fools days gag, I hope the chamberland comes out with one. I don't really care about the 2hp.

I haven't priced garage door openers in a long time, but that seems a bit expensive. For the price it would be nice if it came with at least a battery and one or more of the options, like the tool bundle packs. And for the Ryobi haters, mine all work very well after two years of pretty heavy home owner use, so I don't know why a garage door opener wouldn't last.

My thoughts exactly. Let me know when Milwaukee comes out with their version.

It's not 2 hp. It's "2 hps". Ryobi came up with their own rating system where they say it meets specs to have the same "pull force" as a 2 hp motor. I bet it's 1/8 hp with a gear reduction...

If I didn't already have a stereo, a much better cord reel and a 1940 Emerson Electric fan that IMO has more appeal, I might look at a Chamberlain version of the same idea.

I like this. Garage door openers are stuck in the past technology wise. I just put in an 8500C and although it is a nice unit, the 'techie' features cost an arm and a leg.

This reminds me of what Dropcam and Nest did to home automation/security. Take the 'app' mentality and throw it at a relatively stagnant product offering.

Chamberlain had one with built-in air compressor. Nice concept to have ceiling mounted accessories in one place. But I am not a fan of all-in-ones

This innovation is nice. Would be better if it was made to Ridgid quality (I don't know if these are made cheaply or not) and carried Ridgid's warranty.

I agree and also disagree here. The more technology you involve in your house, the more hackable your house is. Would be pretty funny to wake up at midnight because your garage door is going up and down because someone in Russia hacked your house.

I am not a fan of Ryobi, although I know many people with their tools that are very happy with them. I just personally don't care for them. Although this is a cool concept, I am not a fan of "all-in-one", just feels like if one thing breaks, it would all go out at once....

Really cool idea, just too expensive to add on all the features. By the time you're done it's $500.

That's pretty neat. I also see Ryobi and think cheapo/junk. Having said that though, I have a Ryobi 2hp plunge router that is 30 yrs old that is still running strong. I think other tools may be made better, but for the money I don't think you can beat them.

Might not be a Ryobi thing. Sears has HPS ratings on some of their Craftsman openers. It stands for horsepower strength. Genie is using HPc on theirs. No idea what it means.

In regards to the Ryobi/Ridgid decision #Spn1025. You have to think which market this fits in, not whether one brand is "better" than another. Ryobi fits the DIY and Homeowner, so that's why the garage door opener is fitting Ryobi brand. Also, you already have 30 tools running off that platform.

It really makes sense. Lasers for parking, goodbye tennis balls dangling from strings. Led light. Over 100 cycles of the garage door from one battery; no other gdo is even close to that. Quieter than any other gdo. Again, just makes sense.
