Ford-don't think the columbian is missing a swivel base. Has the 3rd mounting hole under the slide for fixed. I have a 505 near identical. The rest is a $1 fix! Score!

Jeff-sweet piece!

Thanks! [emoji106]

I thought the 600 series Columbians were swivel base while 500 series were fixed base :dunno:

Ford-I dunno...
Definitely looks like my 505, so I just assumed..
Least the set screw is easy to find! :)
The set screw is actually just backed out, still hanging on by a couple threads. Got lucky in that regard. The slide gets tight about 3/4 of the way out, it has been beat on some. Hopefully that will be the only trouble with it. I'll fool with it when I get back home.

The Colombians are so common to come by in working condition! I've given away more then a few to friends and family as well. Really, now that I'm thinking about it, all vises I've given to friends were Colombians, save for one light duty Wilton. Speaks volumes about their survivability record, in relation to their cost!

Trijeff, what inch jaw is your Prentiss?---A 2''er like yours sold for $415.00 and $18.80 shipping on Eprey just recently.---Color and pin stripe was just like yours, only freshly painted.---I got one of those little buggers and Zoomie has a dozen.---I have never seen one of those babies with a split slide, since we are on the subject.:headscrat

Been having a dry spell finding any vises Around my parts. But I did find this today. Athol M & F Co 624. As soon as it gets a little warmer I start cleaning it up. Looks like it's original paint is battle ship grey. Seems to be in very good shape.

Outlaw, since you brought it up, how do those Prentiss's crack own their own, just by due process of time?---Is it their thin casting?

Thin castings and inherent tensions in the castings post-heat. That and there IS a lift pressure on the tail when the vise is in use. I would imagine that tension would also impart some "spreading" to the end of the slide. One imperfection and a crack can start. :dunno: a number crunching analysis engineer could probably model it...

My thought is that the gate or the entrance of molten casting wraps around the coring and it meets at the center of the square slide. When the molten casting material meets it has already started setting up and does not bond together like it should. In plastic injected molds we call this the knit line. It is one of the issues in locating a gate area to fill the part. A incorrect gate location placing the knit line in a stress area could cause the plastic part to break. Maybe Riley could chime in with his thoughts.

Another good possibility. Combine that with what I described...

TJ: AWESOME FIND. I've yet to find a Prentiss vise less than 3 inch jaw for sale in my BIG area I search. looks like yours is in great shape and now you have the baby and great great grand pappy in your stable. you might not post often, but you do post some nice stuff when you do. congrats.

PP: I've seen a few of the Prentiss babies with pin striping so guessing that TJ's is original paint. with all the baby vises you own I would have thought you have at least one baby Prentiss. a fairly new member here on GJ showed me his very very small Prentiss swivel jaw vise and I didn't have a tape, but guessing it was an inch or less jaw width and a working vise.

Thanks guys. Was surprised to find this one locally on CL ... for $25. The jaws are 1-7/8" and I believe this is the original paint, including pinstriping. There is a small chip near one jaw but otherwise this thing is sweet. Patent is 1917, thinking maybe this one was built in 1926 (there is a 26 on the bottom of the slide). It does look nice next to the grandpappy 98, will take pics at some point.

Came across this at my first stop, fair price, gave the old fellow a $20 and carried off the vise. Very clean, no abuse.

Anybody know what this circular notch in the jaws is for?231220ea0bbc9be41607aa52f0de8516.jpg

I would say it is a custom made jaw for flaring the same size tube repeatedly. It could be a special jaw the vise manufacture offered for a specific job ?

Nice additions. Probably worth swapping over those QR swivel bolts from the new 3 on to your daily

You see them on EBay right often.---Nice size home vise though.---They always seemed to be priced too high on EBay, but getting one for $20.00 should cause one to loose sleep.

Hey guys, looking to buy my first vise. Came across this one on CL. It is from Erie Tool Works. Looks like it says 204 1/2?

What do you guys think? I don't hear this company mentioned as often as others. Asking price is $105.

Thanks for the help guys .. I bought it today for $100. She's purdy!

I had a hunch this would show up here! I had the message box open and was about to respond when I realized the last thing I needed was another project. At $40, that was a great deal  I actually sold my Woden No.2 to 'ive', on Kijiji yesterday to a fellow GJ'er yesterday, and was really happy to see it go to such a great home.

Speaking of Records, I had a chance this week to finish up the No.83 I've been working on. This is how it started out, complete with it's distinct hickory smoked scent:

I tore it down, wire wheeled, scraped and degreased everything, threw some paint at it, and ended up with this:

I touched up the embossed lettering with some silver paint, leaving the 'Made In England' in blue, as half of it had been ground off.... I think this may have been done before leaving the factory, as the casting and original assembly is quite lopsided...

You can see from the picture that the jaws, and the rear main screw centering hole are offset, which leads me to believe the country of origin was ground down a little for clearance. Still, it works very well, even though it's personality leans a little to the left.

This one's definitely getting bolted to the bench
