Don: I always like your posts of your garage and STUFF. just curious how long it took you to restore that Texaco work area? is it in your garage gallery thread? I tried to avoid garage gallery the first year or so after i joined because i can sort of control my buying costs with tools and when i see huge garages with cool stuff and tools in them all i can say is I WANT THEM.

I've been able to just visit now and have met some great members there and seen some amazing garages and stuff. I've seen glimpse of yours that looks more like a museum.

do you have visiting hours and what do you charge to take the tour??:bowdown:

so I need to clean up and straighten a few fins on my Lyon huge lazy susan and wondering what kind of pins it has to raise some of them. any chance you might have a few pictures of the underside of the bins showing the pins and washers and bearings. mine only has one pin that is mangled piece of steel and I've got several huge washers and some roller bearings that need replacing or new grease. also your fins look pretty straight and just curious what you would use to straighten them if they were bent like mine?

thanks for posting and if you want to post more of your STUFF i'm sure we will all appreciate it.

thanks

Alchy & Dennis: if we buy more tools we'll need more tool storage. :bounce:

Alchy: of course you'll need a cabinet for parts and supplies for it. :bounce:

don't we all wish we could own and afford to pay taxes and heat our own 40 x 120 garage. I've seen some member's garages with floor and wall space and still more tools and stuff than most of us own, but i'm sure they've earned them.

ALL: anybody else have some cool old metal cabinets to post please do.

My flea market find was this parts cabinet that I use for jack stand storage. Originally it was a wall mount but due to the weight I put in it, I built a frame to set it on and put casters under it.
Now I can move it easily to clean under and around or relocate it.

Gipp: earlier in the thread the guys were talking to me about a french cleat to hold up my 150 pound cabinet that might weight twice that once it's hung. you might do the same with yours and save the floor space for other stuff.

nice looking cabinet. can you open the doors and show us the insides with your jacks?

ALL: i just picked up this very heavy steel bench that has detachable wheels. i'm hoping to modify it a bit to fit a couple of these Cole cabinets under it. we'll see, but it's going to look a little like this butcher block bench that i have in my small garage only the steel one will be in my shop.

ALL: I picked up this Wagner Lockheed cabinet yesterday with the help of another GJ member that let me know it was available. do I NEED another metal cabinet? probably not, but I liked the color, patina and the size should be close to perfect to replace a larger one that my wife keeps running into.

anybody else have a cool, old, big or small metal cabinet they want to share a few pictures please do.

cheers

I spent about 3 weeks working on it the center bench was pretty bent up
Yes I did a few posts of the resto in my garage thread pg.10 post 188 and pg 16 post 308

Yes when ever I get a call lol

Sorry drives I checked but couldn't find any pic's of the resto.
My shelves sit in a pin and roll around on the pin no bearings or grease.
Some of my fins were bent up so I hammered them straight on my anvil
I thinned ot my fins and only used the best ones.
Hope that helps

Don: thanks for the tip on straightening the fins on my lazy susan type bins.

Outlaw: I agree. thanks

ALL: I picked up a Shaw Walker fire cabinet today and OMG it's heavy. i'm guessing it weighs 300 pounds and I had an old couple help load it in my Honda Pilot and I actually got it out by myself. i'll have to post pictures later as I figure out why my cell phone won't transfer them now. probably need a new phone again. anyway if any of you have any of these old fire proof cabinets and want to post up a few pictures please do.

ALL: I wasn't sure what this cabinet was when I saw the ad and a picture of it. I've seen some tacky wood like pattern paper taped on metal cabinets before that were also very lousy cabinets. not this one. this is a diamond in the rough.

it came from a bakery in the early 1900's and is made like a tank. I actually needed a little help putting it in my Honda in thirds. each section can be arranged in any position you wish and stays together with holes and screws nicely. the top can also be removed so any cabinet can be on top. I didn't NEED it, but now i'm working on where i'm going to put it because it is a KEEPER.

more pictures later as I clean it up, but pretty happy with the quality and style of this METAL cabinet. also the old lock works and it has the key.

Nines: thanks for the kudos and i'll get some more pictures of my old COOL metal cabinet that looks like it's made of oak.

IRH: your Remline might be posted in the vintage toolbox thread instead of here, but nice save and restoration.

ALL: I don't know why I like this because the grinder isn't quality and the cabinet is rusty and needs work, but I think I like this set up. anybody else have a set up like this that they've made or inherited? sorry for the fuzzy picture because it was a craigslist deal and if the owner wasn't asking $150 for it and it wasn't an hour's drive i'd probably buy it for $30 and put a grinder on it after spiffing it up.

Drives, thats a buffing tablecwith built in dust collection, ive seen them at the auctions here but they go high so i never got one. There was even a triple head here once, i dont think i would want one now due to size but at the time i wanted one. I definitely would keep the buffer on there if i got one though.

Between the state auction, a couple of other sales, and Nine's assistance with transportation...I've upgraded the storage in the garage outside of the shop:

My new to me Equipto metal workbench. I did some googling and searching here on GJ and I haven't found another like this so far. Take note the ends are tapered giving your room for your feet when you are standing there.

The ****** hand happened when I was unloading it by myself, it got stuck, I jerked it and it came flying out of the Excursion and turning sideways as it fell catching my fingers. My hand is healing fast thankfully!

Not sure if this counts or not but I used to work for an Insurance company that had a big main frame computer system. The IT room had dozens of heavy tape cabinets, where they would store data tapes. When company migrated off of the mainframe they didn't need the cabinets anymore, so I borrowed a trailer and took as many as I could get. They were happy to get rid of them. I gave about six away to family and friends and kept two. They're great for all sorts of things. I keep all sorts of things in them such as fasteners, electrical components (household wiring stuff), sandpaper, tape, etc. The boxes are decent size, probably 42" wide, 24" deep by 72" high and weight a ton. The drawers are on good slides but are on the thin side as far as steel goes. The only downside to them is the drawers are not too tall. Had them for about 15 years now and still holding up strong. I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Merc, That's a good size for tool storage. Two is OK, three are perfect, 4 is start another stack.

I have ONE...

I disagree! Per the pics of course. I ended up with five, removed the riser from both stacks, orphaning one cabinet. Where are you located? I know a guy who has one for sale... :dunno:

Merc, I hope you are a tall guy, but that is a TON of storage!
date!

The top drawer of the fourth BP cabinet is awkward but I can see into it. The hardware cabinet on top is only useful if I pull the entire drawer out. It's currently empty and I'll either find a different place for it or store less commonly used hardware in it and label it well enough to where pulling the entire drawer out will be worth my while.

If you're talking about the multimedia cabinets (i.e. Russ Bassett) that I think you're talking about then YOU ****! They're awesome. I came close to buying one to fit a specific space in my shop but the price point was too high. I look forward to seeing the pictures.

That thing is awesome. Be careful when you post pictures of your yard...I heard Nine talking the other day about coming up there to case the joint.

We're courting a client with locations in Shreveport and Mansfield. If that works out I'll holler at you. With that being said, do you consider yourself to be part of West Texas or South Arkansas? I kid, I kid...
Merc setup is looking awesome.

I can only find those cabinets at
Stupid crazy prices.

Thanks! I found four at stupid LOW prices. Only two would fit where I needed them to, so the two larger went to Nine (see previous posts). The state auction was last weekend, and there was a stack of three (top three in the picture) for sale. One single guy bid me up to double what they would have gone for, but when you have EXACTLY 40 inches of space to deal with...you do what you have to do.

They're out there if you troll Craigslist every so often. Architecture firms, as they move or close down, are getting rid of these. Paper is dying, and taking the need to store paper with it. I credit Nine with opening my eyes to "non-traditional" storage. If you consider what I've sold tool boxes for and what I've paid for these cabinets, I'm pretty close to breaking even and have tons more storage that isn't likely to wear out any time soon.

I don't think so, these were probably made before the term Multi-media existed, LOL... As I understand it, they're made specifically for storing data cartridges from old mainframes (the kind that take up better part of a floor of a building). I just checked and my garage is a mess, LOL. This is the best pic I could get at this hour. Oh, and they're smaller than I thought, 36" W x 18" D X 62.5" H. Not sure why I thought they were bigger than they are, lol...

Pic is at eye level and a little more than top third of cabinet. Same drawers run all the way to floor. I've got two of these and both are buried, lol.

Thanks, yeah, when they asked if anybody wanted them I jumped right in. Believe I took 8 of them. They probably had 50 or so. 8 was all I could fit on the trailer, LOL. They're not really good for tools but great for odds and ends. The drawers are solid but the drawer fronts are a little weak. I have one drawer filled up with staples, brads, screws, nails, etc. and cringe every time I slide the drawer open expecting the front to pop right off. So far they've held up great though.

It's in my "tool & parts crib" which I haven't finished organizing. I have two more unusual cabinets coming from a business that is closing but I have to wait until their stock is all sold off or cleared out before I come pick them up.

Yeah I had plans to make inserts out of Baltic birch bolted to drawer front but never got around to it. They work fine for what I use them for. Just the one drawer that's very heavy.

Aqua: so you want to join CABINETS R US? we have weekly or yearly meetings showing off the latest in tool, parts and nuts and bolts screws and nails and this and that storage. WELL DONE and happy to see you like what I and others do when it comes to alternate storage solutions. I've had a chance to buy a couple of those revolving cabinets for somewhat high dollars, but I may relook at them again since you are showing me a great way to store stuff that I didn't know they were capable of.

Merc: NINES, OUTLAW, JAKE and many others here are great ENABLERS here on GJ, but i'm with you that the storage solutions they mention and that you now have are much better options to the standard tool box or parts storage. last time you showed the drawers of the blueprint cabinets I think you had them full. do you have all those other cabinets full too? also I have my bigger blueprint cabinets stacked 4 high and I stuck supplies for grinders and other parts that I don't need as often in the top drawers because I need a step stool to get a look inside them. WELL DONE SIR

BB: can't say I've seen that Equipto bench yet and I bet that would be a good candidate for BLO once you have time to clean it up and stop the bleeding. how heavy is it? I've put similar stuff in my Honda Pilot where I put the seats down and put down a 1/2 inch 4 x 6 foot rubber gym mat inside to put them on. good luck on healing and like Outlaw said make sure your shots are up to date.

ALL: I picked up a couple Tanker desks yesterday that were built like a tank. I know there is a thread on Tanker desks but they are metal and have heavy duty metal slides and drawers. anybody else use these as a shop or work bench? most of them have a heavy duty Formica top, but a nice piece of steel on them would make a great welding bench because they sit fairly low.

My hand is healing nicely, the worst looking cut on my little finger above is practically gone, the middle finger with the little cut is healing slower for some reason.

The workbench is not too heavy, the pictures above are after removing some wood strips that were on the top for some reason for some specific job. There was a motor with polishing wheels on it I removed at the estate sale.

There were some big spiders hiding underneath it, hopefully none of them are still lurking in the Excursion!

CG: when you get a chance can you show us the insides of those big cabinet drawers and maybe what you can store in them? I bet they were pretty heavy to move out of the warehouse and onto your trailer.

BB: Dang do spiders in your area normally come that size? those look like Down Under Aussie spiders. are they poisoness? happy to hear the hand is healing up even though not always as fast as you like.

ALL: speaking of Tetnus shots has anybody got a cut lately and had some bad infection because their Tetnus shot wasn't up to date? I know I've had a few cuts and one old Lista nuts and bolts bin almost sliced off the side of my thumb a few weeks ago and pretty sure the last tetnus shot I had was maybe 40 years ago when I slipped on my dad's boat trailer and put a little hole on my leg that needed stiches.
